    No full text
Myanmar's transition to a more stable, open political system and economy has moved it into the spotlight of international attention. Myanmar is in the strategic location , in between China and India and bridge between the ASEAN , GMS and BIMSTEC and surrounding with most populated countries . Therefore , diversification of export item as well as new destinations are of most potential. The obiective of the study is that Myanmar had exported a few products to a few countries and there was no diversification at all since colonial period to the recent. Commodity pattern of Myanmar export has been changed enormously, but too-fewcommodity- to-too-few-country pattern was not much changed. Therefore, the objectives of the study are to analyze commodity pattern and direction of recent Myanmar export in detail and identify to what extent Myanmar export structure is diversified in order to point out the urgency of export diversification for Myanmar. Myanmar's export potential based on the bilateral export patterns is observed for six other countries in Southeast Asia and is found to be trading at about 15% its potential. Using a gravity model the highly disaggregated trade data in the period from 2001 to 2010 was analyzed. It was found that intensive margin is the most important share of the trade growth. As for extensive margin can be concluded that geographical extensive margin is more important than product extensive for the growth of expotl. For Myanmar, the challenges from tighter competition within the region against the backdrop of a possible re-shoring of production toward the industrialized countries may well pose hurdles to Myanmar's prospects to diversify its economy away from exclusive reliance on primary commodities and low-skill manufactures exports
