Universalism and global media world
This paper is dedicated to the relation between universalism as a philosophical point of view and global civilization of knowledge created by mass media. Author tries to convince us that both terms - universalism and globalism are not synonyms. Globalism based on world mass media has to win its own disadvantages to be real universalism.Tomasz Wiskulsk
Catholic and Nationalist Populism in the Current Poland
This paper is dedicated to Catholic and nationalist populism that has become a part of political party called Prawo i Sprawiedliwoœæ (Law and Justice), the faction which currently rules in Poland. This attitude of populism is characteristic also for its leader Jaros³aw Kaczyñski who builds his political strategy on populist slogans concerning nationalist and Catholic elements. The level of populism has permanently been growing since the origin of PiS. The great power that supports these tendencies is the Catholic hierarchy. A folk version of religion is a main face of Polish Catholicism. It is one of the sources of populism in Polish society. The Catholic Church in Poland has lost its intellectual image. Author underlines that populist slogans try to mobilize right-wing electorate but consequences for Polish political system, the place of Poland in Europe and international relations as well as for the future of the European Union can be dangerous
The moment when life changed forever. Letters from Ukraine
Almost ten years have passed since the beginning of the war and over a year and a half since the attacks by land, air, and sea. Yet, somehow, brutal and ruthless Russian aggression seems to have become commonplace. We do not freeze in astonishment when we hear about the murders, rapes, tortures, and total destruction wreaked by the Russian invader. We feel tired and sometimes even annoyed. Increasingly often we ask about the price we are paying for this war. Sanctions imposed by the European Union and NATO allies indirectly hit Polish business. Poland is full of Ukrainian refugees who have mixed with pre-war economic migrants. The Ukrainian language can be heard everywhere. We begin to be sceptical and suspicious. We are surprised that Ukrainians can benefit from our social welfare system and even surprised when a Ukrainian worker buys beer in a supermarket at the end of the working day. The original enthusiasm, the selfless desire to help, gradually turns into indifference, and sometimes into reluctance. There are also manifestations of aggression – most often in the virtual space, but there is also direct violence. With our book, we want to remind readers of the first days of the war. Not the reality experienced in our homes in front of the TV, but the reality experienced by Ukrainians
The Catholic Model of the Universal Civilization in the Pastoral Letters of Gioacchimo Pecci (1810‒1903), the Bishop of Perugia
This paper is devoted to the universalistic model of civilization presented in the pastoral letters Gioacchimo Pecci, the bishop of Perugia that later became pope Leo XIII. It is an original type of universalism that we can call “catholic exclusivism” due to his belief that only Christianity created real civilization, which is based on love and human dignity. Pecci argued that the Catholic Church is the power of civilization and progress. He formulated his thesis in the opposition to antagonists of Catholicism that contrasted development with Christianity and the Catholic Church. Pecci emphasized that belief and progress are not two mutally exclusive concepts. Moreover, only the Church created conditions to a holistic development in its materialistic and spiritual aspects. His considerations lead him to excluding other cultural and religious traditions from the civilizational system. But it is still universalism, however in potential sense, thanks to the affirmation that absolutely every person can be a member of the Church. Even though, the Christianity is a source of universal values, especially love that concerns all humankind, also followers of other religions and non-believers.
The thought of Pecci enriches philosophy of history as well as the theory of civilization. For their historiography the pastoral letters are a source that shows an interesting idea that is almost completely unknown and undescribed
Kaszubi wobec wyzwań przemian cywilizacyjnych
The study indicates that Kashubians have been playing an important role among regional communities in Poland. They might be told apart from other regional groups on the basis of differences concerning their ethnical and cultural nature as well as their language. Their characteristics are: the language belonging to West Slavonic group with numerous linguistic elements of German, active involvement in the preservation of specific tradition and customs, unknown in other parts of Poland, separation of political tradition, fluctuating between Polish and German influence. The study provides the image of Kashubian community in the contemporary world conditioned by civilization changes. The study indicates that Kashubians have been playing an important role among regional communities in Poland.
