Fracture Development Around Moshaneng and Kanye, Southeast Botswana
No full text SE Botswana, located in the NW part of the Kaapvaal Craton is a long lived
tectonically stable environment dominated by brittle deformation for more than 2.6 Ga. Relative chronologies in the development of fractures are rationalized according
to major unconformities that developed during the Proterozoic in areas around Moshaneng and Kanye in SE Botswana. Periods of brittle deformation are divided into pre-Transvaal Supergroup, post-Transvaal Supergroup/ pre-Waterberg Group and post-Waterberg Group times. Pre-Transvaal lineaments trend ENE and NE and were probably formed as fractures in a rifting environment Dikes are intruded along some of these lineaments. Post-Transvaal/ pre-Waterberg fractures consist of strike-slip faults that form a conjugate system of two major sets trending NE and NW. These fractures probably formed as a result of E-W compression. The displacement along the NE trending faults depicts reactivation along pre-existing fractures. Regional patterns of fault termination are discemable. Epidermal folds and thrusts were produced in the Transvaal Supergroup rocks. Rotational bulk strain is locally significant. PostWaterberg deformation was dominated by dip-slip faults, vertical displacements and drape folds. An orthogonal system of bedding-normal joints predominates in the layered rocks. Inversion of the relative magnitudes of a2 and a3 probably accounts for a two phase tensile failure of layered rocks during the formation of the joint system. A diagonal system of bedding normal joints is superimposed on the orthogonal system possibly because of pre-existing folds that perturb the remote stress field. Joint spacings have a negatively skewed normal frequency distribution. The joint pattern accounts for the initial process of fragmentation that resulted in the formation of chert breccia. The Botswana Campus of the University of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS): 1971 Student Cohort and Subsequent Opportunity for a National University in Botswana
Full text linkThe University of Botswana’s Undergraduate Academic Calendar, 2023/24 includes a ‘historical note’ that makes scant mention of the establishment of the Botswana Campus in 1971 (University of Botswana, 2023:11). This article is intended to fill the gap in the narrative about the initiation of the Botswana Campus of the University of Botswana Lesotho and Swaziland (UBLS). It is written from the author’s memory as a member of the 1971/72 cohort with input by some peers at the UBLS Botswana Campus. The Campus formed the foundation for the establishment of the University of Botswana (UB) and its subsequent development. These memories are augmented by content derived from published sources and unpublished documents to provide a context and meaning to the history of UB. The UBLS Botswana Campus was established following a decision by the Governing Council in 1970, to devolve the University and establish a physical presence of infrastructure, buildings, staff and students to a new campus in Botswana and add to existing facilities in Swaziland (Vernon-Jackson 1973:199). Establishing the Campus was a race against time, and presented a host of challenges, including procuring accommodation and facilities, recruiting staff, beginning the construction of infrastructure on a virgin site, registering and managing new students. Although no campus premises for teaching and accommodation existed, postponing the beginning of the 1971/72 academic year was not an option. Qualified school leavers were waiting and could not miss the academic programmes for that year. Keeping pace and maintaining established standards of programmes at the other two campuses in Lesotho and Swaziland was imperative. The Governments of Botswana and Swaziland demonstrated full support for the Council decision, hence the implementation in establishing the new campus in Gaborone. The Lesotho Government, however, was a reluctant participant in the devolution exercise (Mokgopakgosi 2013:467). All along, Lesotho had enjoyed the prestige of hosting the University and the status of a senior campus and administrative headquarters
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
