    Non-commutative crepant resolutions for some toric singularities. II

    Using the theory of dimer models Broomhead proved that every 3-dimensional Gorenstein aftine tonic variety Spec R admits a tonic non-commutative crepant resolution (NCCR). We give an alternative proof of this result by constructing a tilting bundle on a (stacky) crepant resolution of Spec R using standard tonic methods.     Tilting Bundles on Hypertoric Varieties

    Recently McBreen and Webster constructed a tilting bundle on a smooth hypertoric variety (using reduction to finite characteristic) and showed that its endomorphism ring is Koszul. In this short note we present alternative proofs for these results. We simply observe that the tilting bundle constructed by Halpern-Leistner and Sam on a generic open Geometric Invariant Theory substack of the ambient linear space restricts to a tilting bundle on the hypertoric variety.     Semi-orthogonal decompositions of GIT quotient stacks

    If G is a reductive group acting on a linearized smooth scheme X then we show that under suitable standard conditions the derived category D(X-ss/G) of the corresponding GIT quotient stack Xss/G has a semi-orthogonal decomposition consisting of derived categories of coherent sheaves of rings on X-ss//G which are locally of finite global dimension. One of the components of the decomposition is a certain non-commutative resolution of X-ss//G constructed earlier by the authors. As a concrete example we obtain in the case of odd Pfaffians a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the corresponding quotient stack in which all the parts are certain specific non-commutative crepant resolutions of Pfaffians of lower or equal rank which had also been constructed earlier by the authors. In particular this semi-orthogonal decomposition cannot be refined further since its parts are Calabi-Yau. The results in this paper complement results by Halpern-Leistner, Ballard-Favero-Katzarkov and DonovanSegal that assert the existence of a semi-orthogonal decomposition of D(X/G) in which one of the parts is D(X-ss/G).S.     The Frobenius morphism in invariant theory

    Let R be the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian G = Gr(2, n) defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic p > 0. In this paper we give a completely characteristic free description of the decomposition of R, considered as a graded R-p-module, into indecomposables ("Frobenius summands"). As a corollary we obtain a similar decomposition for the Frobenius pushforward of the structure sheaf of G and we obtain in particular that this pushforward is almost never a tilting bundle. On the other hand we show that R provides a "noncommutative resolution" for R-p when p >= n - 2, generalizing a result known to be true for toric varieties. In both the invariant theory and the geometric setting we observe that if the characteristic is not too small the Frobenius summands do not depend on the characteristic in a suitable sense. In the geometric setting this is an explicit version of a general result by Bezrukavnikov and Mirkovid on Frobenius decompositions for partial flag varieties.     Catalan numbers and noncommutative Hilbert schemes

    We find an explicit S-n -equivariant bijection between the integral points in a certain zonotope in R- n , combinatorially equivalent to the permutahedron, and the set of m-parking functions of length n. This bijection restricts to a bijection between the regular S n -orbits and (m, n)-Dyck paths, the number of which is given by the Fuss-Catalan number A( n) (m, 1). Our motivation came from studying tilting bundles on noncommutative Hilbert schemes. As a side result we use these tilting bundles to construct a semi-orthogonal decomposition of the derived category of noncommutative Hilbert schemes.We thank Cesar Ceballos for very helpful discussions, in particular for teaching us about parking functions which lead to the simple proof of Corollary 1.6.     Synthesis of antibacterial composite coating containing nanocapsules in an atmospheric pressure plasma

    Antibacterial coating is an important strategy preventing bacterial colonization and biofilm formation. One-step synthesis of nanocapsule-containing antibacterial coatings with controlled release of Ag+ ions was achieved in the current work by aerosol-assisted atmospheric pressure plasma deposition. The experimental parameters of deposition including the discharge power, silver nitrate concentration, aerosol flow rate, continuous and pulsed mode of operation were studied in order to analyze their effects on surface morphology and chemical composition of the coating. Formation of nanocapsules embedded in the polymeric coating was observed. A core-shell structure was found for nanocapsule with silver in the core and polymer in the shell. Antibacterial coatings on polyethylene terephthalate film were studied in terms of Ag+ ion release, antibacterial properties against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, and cytotoxicity with murine fibroblasts. Two-phase release kinetics of Ag+ ions was observed as initially a short-term burst release followed by a long-term slow release. It was revealed that high antibacterial efficiency of the coatings deposited on polyethylene terephthalate films can be coupled with low cytotoxicity. These biocompatible antibacterial coatings are very promising in different fields including biological applications

    Multilingual reading proficiency in an emerging parallel-language environment

    Rapid changes have taken place in the linguistic environment of higher education in Europe, where many students attend parallel-language courses, leading to a use of English (officially a foreign language) for academic purposes alongside the local language. This study investigated the relationship of Swedish students’ reading habits and abilities in Swedish and English. Their reading abilities were assessed with an interview and a Swedish and English reading test, and their reading habits with an interview, questionnaire, and Author Recognition Test. The study found correlation between English reading ability and some of the reading habits measures which is more reminiscent of situations where English is an official language. This was reflected in the students’ reading habits. Their leisure reading included both Swedish and English material, and their choice between the two depended primarily on factors such as quality and availability, and not language. So for these students there is little difference between reading difficulty in L1 and L2. These results suggest that many students in the parallel-language environments are highly biliterate, implying very different EAP requirements than encountered elsewhere. Implications are discussed.</p

    Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte in confrontation mood : simultaneous geographical and host spectrum expansion in southeastern Slovenia

    Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, in its original North American habitat also known as western corn rootworm beetle, actively continues its expansion to new territories and uses Homo sapiens as its prime vector. It took only 15 years to spread to and occupy the southeastern and central parts of Europe, so far with the exception of Denmark where it has not been documented as of 2007. Economic thresholds have been reached and surpassed only in Southeast European countries like Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, Eastern Croatia, Romania and Northern Italy. But both, the area affected and the severity of symptoms are increasing. Model calculations by a number of authors (Baufeld & Enzian, 2005 a and b; Hongmei Li & al. 2006, CLIMEX model) indicate a definitive propensity of D. v. virgifera to expand its currently occupied territory to regions with moderate temperatures and Zea mays cultivation. East Africa and Eastern Asia are included in the list of potential candidates for future inadvertent introduction. In most discussions it is tacitly and erroneously assumed that Z. mays is the only or the only important host of D. v. virgifera. Our recent observations in Eastern Slovenia on the oil pumpkin Cucurbita pepo indicate, however, that this simplifying assumption is notlonger strictly valid. It has to be modified in light of new evidence. Here, we report a few field experiments conducted in August of 2006 clarifying the host status of C. pepo in a European country.Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (Coleoptera: Chysomelidae), im deutschsprachigen Raum als Westlicher Maiswurzelbohrer bekannt, ist ein von der Neuen Welt nach Europa eingeschleppter Schädling. Er gelangte in mindestens drei Einwanderungsschüben, die durch molekulargenetische Untersuchungen unterscheidbar sind, nach Europa. Innerhalb der letzten eineinhalb Jahrzehnte wurde, mit Ausnahme von Dänemark, die gesamte Fläche Südost- und Zentraleuropas vom Käfer besiedelt. In mehreren osteuropäischen Ländern ist die ökonomische Schadensschwelle bereits überschritten. Bis 2006 galt Zea mays als einzige bekannte europäische Wirtspflanze. Allerdings deuten neueste Beobachtungen in Ostslowenien vom August 2006 auf kleine Zahlen von Käfern am Ölkürbis Cucurbita pepo und damit auf eine Ausdehnung des Wirtsspektrums von D. v. virgifera hin. Der Käfer tritt in kleinen Zahlen als Besucher von Ölkürbisblüten mit einer Häufigkeit von 0,1 % auf. Er ist aber auch in geringer Häufigkeit in Kairomon- und Pheromonfallen in Ölkürbisfeldern südlich von Gaberje in Ostslowenien anzutreffen. Dieses Ergebnis stellt den zukünftigen Wert des Fruchtwechsels in Frage, der bisher als eine der wirksamsten und nachhaltigsten Methoden des integrierten Pflanzenschutzes galt

    We give a criterion for the existence of noncommutative crepant resolutions (NCCRs) for certain toric singularities. In particular, we recover Broomhead's result that a three-dimensional toric Gorenstein singularity has an NCCR.
