Self-organized aggregation and traveling wave in a kinetic transport model for run-and-tumble bacteria (Mathematical Analysis in Fluid and Gas Dynamics)
The self-organized pattern formation of run-and-tumble chemotactic bacteria is numerically investigated based on a kinetic transport equation considering internal adaptation dynamics and a finite tumbling duration. It is confirmed that the volcano-like aggregation profile is generated due to the coupling of diffusion and internal adaptation dynamics occurring at a large adaptation-time scaling. Moreover, an extended Keller-Segel model, derived by the asymptotic analysis of the kinetic model at the large adaptation-time scale, can describe the volcano effect well. It is also found that when the mean run length of the bacteria becomes large, the volcano effect is more enhanced and unexpectedly, different types of pattern formation (i.e., standing and traveling bands) arise at very large adaptation times. The mathematical mechanism of the novel pattern formation should be an important future study. This paper is a resume of previous studies by the author in S. Yasuda, Bull. Math. Acute effect of static stretching on power output during concentric dynamic constant external resistance leg extension.
Yamaguchi, T., K. Ishii, M. Yamanaka, and K. Yasuda. Acute effect of static stretching on power output during concentric dynamic constant external resistance leg extension. J. Strength Cond. Res. 20(4):804–810. 2006.—The purpose of the present study was to clarify the effect of static stretching on muscular performance during concentric isotonic (dynamic constant external resistance [DCER]) muscle actions under various loads. Concentric DCER leg extension power outputs were assessed in 12 healthy male subjects after 2 types of pretreatment. The pretreatments included (a) static stretching treatment performing 6 types of static stretching on leg extensors (4 sets of 30 seconds each with 20-second rest periods; total duration 20 minutes) and (b) nonstretching treatment by resting for 20 minutes in a sitting position. Loads during assessment of the power output were set to 5, 30, and 60% of the maximum voluntary contractile (MVC) torque with isometric leg extension in each subject. The peak power output following the static stretching treatment was significantly (p < 0.05) lower than that following the nonstretching treatment under each load (5% MVC, 418.0 ± 82.2 W vs. 466.2 ± 89.5 W; 30% MVC, 506.4 ± 82.8 W vs. 536.4 ± 97.0 W; 60% MVC, 478.6 ± 77.5 W vs. 523.8 ± 97.8 W). The present study demonstrated that relatively extensive static stretching significantly reduces power output with concentric DCER muscle actions under various loads. Common power activities are carried out by DCER muscle actions under various loads. Therefore, the result of the present study suggests that relatively extensive static stretching decreases power performance
El debate literario sobre la modernidad en el Jaón de preguerra y posguerra: Yasuda Yojuro y Kobayashi
Japanese critics of modernism Kobayashi Hideo and Yasuda Yojuro wrote an important chapter in the history of the formation of the consciousness of identity in the field of literary semiotics in Japan. It is necessary to review their contribution in the present context of the global debate on national and cultural identities. Kobayashi has had a say on current critics of the sort of Karatani Kojin, who has made an appreciative reception of the formers critic way of thinking. Here the author of this essay claims that the position of Kobayashi in favour of the aesthetic category of beauty should not be misunderstood for sheer aestheticism, but on the contrary it may imply a positive stance towards a restatement of meaning in a desemanticised world of pure profit.
Pitting corrosion and intergranular corrosion of Al and Al-Cu alloy single crystals and bicrystals
Single crystals and bicrystals have been used to study pitting corrosion and intergranular corrosion of Al and Al-Cu alloys in 0.5M NaCl solution.
The critical pitting potential and pit density were examined as a function of a number of factors. These included crystallographic orientation; the bulk solution chemistry including CI- concentration, NO₃- addition and pH; the effect of Cu alloying; and the effects of homogenizing and aging on the alloy crystals.
The susceptibility for pitting corrosion was found to depend on crystallographic orientation in pure Al with {111} showing maximum pitting and {011} and {001} exhibiting progressively less pitting. This crystallographic effect was not observed in the Al-3 wt% Cu alloy. The addition of Cu to pure Al was found to raise the Epit and produce a higher pit density on the surface. The increase of CI⁻ concentration was found to enhance pitting corrosion, producing a higher pit density and lowering the Epit. Addition of NO₃- to the solution decreases pitting corrosion, reduces the pit density and substantially shifts the Epit to a more noble potential.
A model of pitting corrosion is proposed, based on a local kinetic balance between the repassivation process and the dissolution process at the bare metal surface at the base of a preexisting oxide flaw on the crystal surface. The model successfully accounts for the observed effects of the Cu alloy addition, and the solution composition variations on pitting corrosion.
In the alloy bicrystals, it was observed that pitting corrosion in the grain boundary region was dependent on the composition and thermal history of the crystal. In most of the homogenized Al-Cu bicrystals, the presence of the grain boundary did not influence the pitting corrosion. In a 0.1 wt% Cu alloy with a tilt boundary of 28° about the direction preferential pitting along the grain boundary was observed. The preferential pitting is attributed to nonequilibrium depletion of Cu at the high angle tilt boundary. Preferential attack is also observed at grain boundaries in as-grown and in aged bicrystals. This is attributed to Cu segregation in the crystals and the lower value of Epit associated with the Cu depleted regions.Applied Science, Faculty ofMaterials Engineering, Department ofGraduat
Towards a re-examination of methodology in the historical study of Japanese language teaching (II) : The 'discussion' between Yasuda and Matsuoka, and some other issues
In this paper, the author critically examines a 'discussion' between Toshiaki Yasuda and Hiroshi Matsuoka originating from a symposium held at the Society for Teaching Japanese as a Foreign Language Academic Conference in 2002. Matsuoka criticized Yasuda's comment on the future of the historical study of Japanese language teaching. He insisted on the universality of language teaching based on the comparison of Comenius with Kiichiro Yamaguchi in the field of pedagogical thought and teaching methods. However, it is pointed out that Matsuoka made an unfair low evaluation of Yasuda's comment, an inappropriate comparison beween Comenius and Yamaguchi, and a narrow interpretation of Yamaguchi's textbook. Moreover, t he author criticizes this evaluation and interpretation since it seems to be caused by a feeling of retaliation for the criticisms against Japanese language teaching from Yasuda and Takeshi Komagome. In addition, the author also points out and criticizes an inconsistent attitude of Matsuoka and Masaaki Seki in that they criticized Japanese language teaching outsiders (Yasuda and Komagome) yet make no criticism against insiders. Finally, the author advocates the necessity of learning from historians and for criticism against a discourse lacking in understanding of Japanese language teaching
