Mertacor 2009 Demystified: Strategies and Guidelines for Market Design in TAC
Current global economy involves highly interconnected markets competing with each other for market share and profit. The recent global financial crisis has revived research interest in this competition and has brought out the need for novel, efficient rules. TAC Market Design tournament is one of the first efforts in studying the interaction between opponent stock exchanges. In this paper, we describe our entrant for 2009, Mertacor, and reason about the importance of proper pricing in this global setting
CAT 2008 Post-Tournament Evaluation: The Mertacor’s Perspective
TAC Market Design (or CAT) tournament is an effort to study the competition among modern stock exchanges trying to attract potential traders while maximizing their profit. This paper shortly presents Mertacor, our entrant for 2008, and makes an attempt to evaluate its performance. We compare Mertacor with the other available entries for the setting of CAT 2008 as well as beyond the tournament. What’s more, we introduce a simple yet effective way of computing the global competitive equilibrium that Mertacor utilizes and discuss about its importance for the game
Software Agents in Multiple Adaptive Double Auction Markets
The prevalence of on-line auctions has stimulated the interest of both the economists and computer scientists in an effort to understand and improve their rules. One famous form of these economic mechanisms is the double auction and, more specifically, the continuous double auction which is commonly used in today’s major stock exchanges worldwide. Software agents constitute a promising tool for the study and implementation of novel double auction mechanisms. TAC Market Design tournament makes an attempt to study the competition among such dynamically adjusted market institutions trying to attract potential traders while maximizing their profit. In this paper we describe the tournament and discuss about the importance of the global competitive equilibrium in its economy. Moreover, we provide a simple, yet effective estimation technique for the latter that our entrant, Mertacor, has utilized during the games of 2008
Liquid crystal blazed grating beam deflector
A multiple-angle liquid crystal blazed grating beam deflector has been developed. It consists of a stack of liquid crystal blazed gratings where each layer can deflect incident light with very high efficiency into one of two different directions depending on the driving condition. Four steering angles (10.8 degrees, 7.2 degrees, 3.6 degrees, 0 degrees) with about 70% diffraction efficiency are demonstrated with 15 V. The device's working principle, design considerations, fabrication process, and characterization results are described

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
