Jessica Mitchell Interview
No full textJessica Mitchell (Class of 2017) was interviewed by Jonathan Angulo via the Zoom internet-based video conferencing software on January 15, 2021. Ms. Mitchell was born in California, and her family later relocated to Richardson, Texas. In her interview, she discusses her appreciation for Richardson's racial diversity. She was involved in several organizations in high school and applied to various universities throughout the United States. Ms. Mitchell chose SMU because the admissions office periodically invited her to school events, such as the opening of the Bush Presidential Library and Museum. As an undergraduate, she quickly became involved in numerous organizations on campus, including the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, the Association of Black Students, and the Women and LGBT Center. Ms. Mitchell talks about how she enjoyed orientation and the student affairs office the most during her time at SMU, while acknowledging the university's areas of opportunity and potential growth. She recalled the #BlackAtSMU movement and sentiment on campus after the 2016 election, which revealed the state of racial affairs at school. After graduating with a degree in Markets and Culture in 2017, Ms. Mitchell moved to Brooklyn and worked at a temp agency, which helped her find a career. She benefited from SMU Alumni's New York chapter, which expanded her network in the city, and she eventually acquired a job at Plaid, a fintech company. At the time of the interview, Ms. Mitchell continued to enjoy living and working in New York City

No full textJessica Hagedorn Born and raised in the Philippines, Jessica Hagedorn is well-known as a performance artist, poet, and playwright. She is the author of the novel Dogeaters (Penguin), which was nominated for the National Book Award. Hagedorn wrote the screenplay for Fresh Kill, an independent first feature film directed and produced by Shu Lea Cheang and has collaborated on film projects, Color Schemes and Those Fluttering Objects of Desire. Her multimedia theater pieces include Teenytown, The Art of War: Nine situations, and Holy Food. Hagedorn is the recipient of a 1994 Lila Wallace Reader’s Digest Writers Award, and a 1995 NEA Creative Writing Fellowship. Her new novel, The Gangster of Love has been recently released by Houghton Mifflin
