Experimental damage Characterization of polymeric films used in stratospheric pressurized balloons
The super-pressure balloons developed by CNES are a great challenge in scientific ballooning. Whatever the balloon type considered (spherical, pumpkin...), it is necessary to have good knowledge of the mechanical behavior of the envelope regarding to the flight level and the lifespan of the balloon. It appears during the working stages of the super pressure balloons that these last can exploded prematurely in the course of the first hours of flight. For this reason CNES and LGP are carrying out research programs about experimentations and modelling in order to predict a good stability of the balloons flight and guarantee a life time in adequacy with the technical requirement. This study deals with multilayered polymeric film damage which induce balloons failure. These experimental and numerical study aims, are a better understanding and predicting of the damage mechanisms bringing the premature explosion of balloons. The following damages phenomena have different origins. The firsts are simple and triple wrinkles owed during the process and the stocking stages of the balloons. The second damage phenomenon is associated to the creep of the polymeric film during the flight of the balloon. The first experimental results we present in this paper, concern the mechanical characterization of three different damage phenomena. The severe damage induced by the wrinkles of the film involves a significant loss of mechanical properties. In a second part the theoretical study, concerns the choice and the development of a non linear viscoelastic coupled damage behavior model in a finite element code
Identification of the behavior of composites under bi-axial loading
Knowledge of the behavior of composite materials under multi-axial stress state remains a major objective for structure sizing and optimization. The bi-axial fatigue machine owned by the LGP allows generating a bi-axial stress state, using cruciform specimens. The design of such specimens is a real challenge for researchers to face the specific problems linked to composite materials. A new kind of cruciform specimen will be designed specifically for composite materials manufactured using the liquid resin infusion (LRI) process. It will be manufactured with this process and used to characterize the behavior of composite materials under bi-axial loading. The monitoring of the experiments will be achieved using simultaneously digital image correlation (DIC) to measure the displacements and infrared thermography to measure the temperature variations. DIC is a full field measuring technique which allows obtaining the full cartography of the displacements all over the surface of the specimen. Infrared thermography is also a full field measuring technique used to obtain the cartography of temperature on the whole surface of the specimen. A correlation between the data obtained with both systems will be attempted to identify the damage mechanisms of composites under bi-axial fatigue. A correlation between uni-axial and bi-axial data will also be attempted
Experimental identification of the behavior of a composite fuselage : defects detection by full field measurements
The context of this work concerns the process of Liquid Resin Infusion (LRI) developed under the project "composite fuselage" by DAHER SOCATA. This manufacturing process can produce parts with complex shapes and entire panels of composite fuselage, reducing assembly steps and therefore the production time. The thesis work focused on the experimental identification of the behavior of a composite fuselage. This work is divided into two parts which are the qualification of non destructive testing (NDT) compared to a critical defect size and the identification of the behavior of an orthotropic composite structure with defect. The first part is to evaluate the NDT techniques based on full field measurements (acoustic, thermal and densimetric), capable of detecting internal defects as porosities and delaminations in monolithic and sandwich composite structures, and providing a results visualization by a 2D or 3D defects map. The choice of these methods was motivated by DAHER SOCATA which wants to learn new NDT skills. The second part is to evaluate the elastic parameters of an orthotropic composite structure (structure composed by a virgin zone and a damaged zone) through an identification process from field measurements, by global and local step. This procedure is divided into four parts with two identification steps and a image processing step
Methods development for full-field measurement integration
The optical dimensional measurements are emergent techniques whose control and exploitation still address many questions. For a better understanding of the stereo-correlation measurement systems, studies are made to characterize and assess the digital image correlation measurement error by the way of synthetic images. The stereovision characterization is made using real images. The results highlight the influence of several parameters : subset size, strain and strain gradient. The last part of this study is devoted to the identification of constitutive behaviour law using full-field measurements. Two identification methods are used : the virtual fields method to determine the elastic parameters of a material and the finite element model updating method to identify the elasto-plastic behaviour law
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
