    International Conference on Applications and Design in Mechanical Engineering 2012 (ICADME 2012) organized by School of Mechatronic Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), 27th - 28th Februari 2012 at Bayview Beach Resort, Penang, Malaysia.Thermal spreader is used in micro-thermoelectric power generating system to produce uniform temperature distribution along the micro-combustor walls, very important for thermoelectric cells to generate high electrical output power. In the current work, the effects of material and thickness of thermal spreaders and the temperature of the heat source on temperature distribution along the surface of a thermal spreader were experimentally investigated. The result shows that thermal spreader made from copper produces the most uniform temperature distribution compared with thermal spreaders made from aluminum and zinc. The temperature uniformity of the thermal spreader also increases as the thickness increases but decrease as the temperature of the heat source increases

    Covid 19, which spread on the earth, changed the whole social order, be it economics, education, politics, health and even the way of Muslims, especially worship. This is caused by an emergency requiring everyone not to carry out activities outside the home, so that the impact on all worship activities that should be carried out by worshiping in the mosque must be avoided. In this article the author tries to explore changes in law if viewed from the side of the rule “La Yunkiru Tag{ayyur Al-Ahkam Bitag{ayyur Al-Azman wa Al-Ahwal” (not denied the change in a law due to the eruption of the times and circumstances) during a pandemic. This principle becomes the basis of the flexibility of Islamic law in accordance with the development and conditions of the times. So that Islamic law is always present as a law in accordance with human history throughout the ages from the time of Adam to the end of time. Islam is always suitable and in accordance with all climates and all nations throughout the world. It is a religion that remains perfect when faced with all the changes that are continually there.     Despite the rapid growth in the uptake of renewable energy technologies, the educational profile and the skills gained at University level do not always comply with the practical needs of the organisations working in the field. Furthermore, even though the residential sector has very high potential in curbing its CO2 emissions worldwide thus meeting the challenging goals set out by the international agreements, such reduction has been limited so far. Within this context, the ‘Skybelt’ project, co-funded by the EU under the framework of the Erasmus + programme aims at enhancing in several Universities of Asia and Europe the engineering skills of students of all level for application of sustainable renewable energy solutions in the built environment. With the target of increasing the employability of graduates and the impact of the project, a survey on the labour market needs for specialists with enhanced knowledge and skills in the topic of the project has been conducted in the related Asian countries. Hence, relevant industries, labour market organisations and other stakeholders have been interviewed and the main results of this analysis is reported in the present paper. As first outcome of this activity, the obtained results have been considered in the selection of the modules to be improved according to a student centred study approach

    Characterization of Banana (Musa spp.) Pseudo-Stem and Fruit-Bunch-Stem as a Potential Renewable Energy Resource

    Banana pseudo-stem and fruit-bunch-stem are agricultural residues that can be used for conversion to bio-char, biooil, and gases by using thermochemical process. The aim of this work is to characterize banana pseudo-stem and banana fruit-bunch-stem through proximate analysis, elemental analysis, chemical analysis, thermo-gravimetric analysis, and heating calorific value. The ash contents of the banana pseudo-stem and banana fruit-bunch-stem are 11.0 mf wt.% and 20.6 mf wt.%; while the carbon content of banana pseudo-stem and fruit-bunch-stem are 37.9 mf wt.% and 35.58 mf wt.% respectively. The molecular formulas for banana stem and banana fruit-bunch-stem are C24H33NO26 and C19H29NO33 respectively. The measured higher heating values of banana pseudostem and banana fruit-bunch-stem are 15.5MJ/kg and 12.7 MJ/kg respectively. By chemical analysis, the lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose contents in the samples will also be presented. The feasibility of the banana wastes to be a feedstock for thermochemical process in comparison with other biomass will be discussed in this paper

    Development of Optimal Design Support System for Beam Structure

    This paper is about the development of a support system to optimize the beam design. Designing is known to be a tedious and lengthy process especially for flexural members and it is time consuming. This project aims to come out with a mathematical model that able to shorten the time of designing the flexural members by utilizing software that already available in the industry. The approach used by the author is based on optimizing concept which is a skill that human used every day without notice. Optimization helps in determining the best solution either to maximize or minimize. Each problem has different method and formulas to approach, including the limitation and constraints. It can be said that the optimized result of one case is distinctive to another. This project comprises of 2 phases. The phases are distinguished by the software that the author used. In the first phase, the author used Microsoft Excel application that is already available and can be accessed anywhere. While for the second phase, the project will be conducted by incorporating MatLab software. The benchmark of this project is OptDesX, an optimization software that is already available and used in the industry. Afterwards, errors debugging is conducted before this support system can be tested on external user. In a nut shell, the development of the support system to optimize flexural member is successful and the objectives set are met
