The surgical outcomes of radial artery forearm free-flap phalloplasty in transgender men: single-centre experience and systematic review of the current literature
Radial artery forearm free-flap (RAFFF) phalloplasty is considered by most authors as the gold-standard technique for genital gender-affirming surgery (GGAS). RAFFF surgical complications have rarely been investigated, and the aim of this study and literature review is to analyse and focus on the surgical technique and its postoperative vascular complications. From May 2016 to January 2020, a consecutive series of 25 transgender men who underwent GGAS were enrolled in the present study. Age, BMI and smoking habits were recorded for all patients. Overall, vascular flap complications occurred in 20% of cases. Complete flap loss due to acute arterial thrombosis was recorded in a single case (4%). In 8% of cases, limited ventro-proximal arterial ischaemia was detected, while in the remaining 8% of cases, venous ventral ischaemia was reported. These results were compared with the current literature results. Indeed, from our analysis, the number of flap veins (<2) was the only predictive factor for vascular complications. In conclusion, RAFFF represents a reliable option for total phallic construction, leading to satisfactory results in terms of flap survival. To optimize the surgical outcomes, venous vascular drainage should be recommended
Security, immigration and development assistance: an integrated approach
The European Union’s security and immigration policy requires a set of actions coordinated between the Union and individual Member States, plus a consistent policy of development cooperation within the frame work of European Neightbourhood Policy (ENP). This article takes a look at the European approach in these policy areas. After considering the economic and social causes of international migration, it dwells on the prospective “migratory pressure” on Europe, which is expected to be strong, especially from the southern shores of the Mediterranean. The authors stress the essential role of European Neightbourhood Policy, which must promote development and democracy in the countries bordering on the Union. It is necessary to create an area of stability and security within which to achieve negotiated regulation of migratory flows. It is argued that the financial resources for ENP are inadequate and that a decisive role will be played by bilateral aid to the bordering countries from EU member States. Nevertheless, the author observe that these resources are subject to the budgetary constraints of the Stability and Growth Pact and accordingly recommend that the development assistance should also be treated as investment in stability and security, the benefits of which will be reflected in diminished future costs for individual European countries. The authors therefore call for the application of the “golden rule” to this expenditure, treating it on a par with investment and R&D spending for purpose of calculating government deficits
Social bionarratives and the environmental education : a study of environmental perceptions and experiences of students of a public school in Ouro Preto city.
e envolverá a análise textual discursiva.
pesquisa. This research investigates possibilities of Environmental Urban Education, focusing on,
as an object of study, the student’s environmental perceptions and experiences, from
primary public school in Ouro Preto/MG. In the face of this challenge, we are guided by
the perspective of different ways of existing and being in the territory, presented by the
Environmental Education desde el Sur approach, as well as by the author productions,
resulting from developed problematizations by socio biodiversity investigators while
school content. Considering Ouro Preto’s historical construction is also made in social
relationships and territorial occupation throughout time, we weighed that Ouro Preto
must be seen and felt beyond the Historic Center, Heritage of Humanity Site. This study
will show a qualitative approach and will involve discourse textual analysis. Through the
workshop and the bionarratives produced, we hope to comprehend the context of the
research subjects, which is the relationship between the students and the territory, looking
for the ideological, political, cultural, social constructs included in the content of the
bionarratives. We believe that activities of environmental education based on the students’ perception and focused on the territory may favor the experiences, conceptions
and, consequently, environmental perception of the subjects participating in the research
Thoughts on education action in listed architecture sets: Ouro Preto
This paper presents part of the considerations raised by the author while developing her Master dissertation on the Professional Masters Degree in Cultural Heritage Conservation at Preservação do Patrimônio Culturaldo Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artísitico Nacional (Iphan), whose study focused on her concerns and observations as a historian, working as an educator at the Technical Office of Iphan in Ouro Preto. This town has become a locus where meaning abounds and the image of the “colonial town” is entrenched. The choice of using only part of the town reflects an incomplete image, hindering locals to experience recognition and belonging, as they perceive a portion of their town being treated as a historical monument, while another portion remains forgotten, unknown. Information raised on actions developed in the 1980s in Ouro Preto reflect the actions currently implemented by Casa do Patrimônio of Ouro Preto and will be the mainfocus of the questions and thoughts brought about in this research. It is believed here that towns can be experienced as cultural goods when attentions are turned to the social and affective relations created around such places
Ouro Preto Carnival is one of the most popular events in the Minas Gerais region. However, while it promotes joy and culture, it also exposes an often-invisible facet of gender-based violence: sexual harassment. This study aims to understand how sexual harassment affects women during Ouro Preto Carnival, investigating how these experiences impact their lives and how they cope. The research builds on a previous study by the author and seeks to deepen the analysis of social representations of gender, the emotional and social impacts women suffer, and the coping strategies they adopt. The methodology combined a literature review, analysis of official public safety data, and a qualitative autoethnographic approach, in which the researcher's own experience serves as a guiding thread, contextualized by anonymous accounts that illustrate the collective experience. The conclusion is that sexual harassment in Ouro Preto has profound effects on women's lives, compromising their freedom and well-being. The analysis reveals that women develop self-protection strategies and create support networks as a form of resistance to the ineffectiveness of institutional responses and a culture of silencing. A significant disparity was also identified between lived experiences and official records, pointing to systematic underreporting. The results reinforce the urgent need for more effective public policies, accessible reporting channels, and educational initiatives to combat harassment in festive settings. It is hoped that this research will contribute to the creation of safer environments for all
