From exploratory search to web search and back
The power of search is with no doubt one of the main aspects for the success of the Web. Currently available search engines on the Web allow to return results with a high precision. Nevertheless, if we limit our attention only to lookup search we are missing another important search task. In exploratory search, the user is willing not only to find documents relevant with respect to her query but she is also interested in learning, discovering and understanding novel knowledge on complex and sometimes unknown topics.. In the paper we address this issue presenting LED, a web based system that aims to improve (lookup) Web search by enabling users to properly explore knowledge associated to her query. We rely on DBpedia to explore the semantics of keywords within the query thus suggesting potentially interesting related topics/keywords to the use

In questo contributo si affronta il tema complesso della transumanza, in prospettiva storico-culturale e con particolare riferimento alla transumanza sul Gargano, a partire dagli studi di Giovanni Battista Bronzini. Un’attenzione particolare è dedicata al collegamento tra il fenomeno della pastorizia transumante e le trasformazioni occorse nel santuario di San Matteo a San Marco in Lamis (FG) in epoca moderna. In riferimento a tali processi, alla transumanza si può ascrivere il ruolo di fattore stimolante e agentivo sul piano storico
Semantic tagging for crowd computing
The recent blow up of crowd computing initiatives on the web calls for smarter methodologies and tools to annotate, query and explore repositories. There is the need for scalable techniques able to return also approximate results with respect to a given query as a ranked set of promising alternatives. In this paper we concentrate on annotation and retrieval of software components, exploiting semantic tagging relying on DBpedia. We propose a new hybrid methodology to rank resources in this dataset. Inputs of our ranking system are (i) the DBpedia dataset; (ii) external information sources such as classical search engine results, social tagging systems and wikipedia-related information. We compare our approach with other RDF similarity measures, proving the validity of our algorithm with an extensive evaluation involving real user
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Like breadcrumbs in the forest: A tool for semantic exploratory search
The recent explosion of freely available RDF datasets on the Web calls for new tools and techniques for semantic-enabled exploratory browsing. We present ENT, an HTML5-based tool that guides the user through the navigation of RDF graphs avoiding the visualization of information resulting irrelevant for the exploratory task. Thanks to a hypertree-based visu- alization of the data-space, the user has a clear picture both of his/her navigation path and of the information he/she may discover. Copyright 2011 ACM
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Semantic tag cloud generation via DBpedia
Many current recommender systems exploit textual annotations (tags) provided by users to retrieve and suggest online contents. The text-based recommendation provided by these systems could be enhanced (i) using unambiguous identifiers representative of tags and (ii) exploiting semantic relations among tags which are impossible to be discovered by traditional textual analysis. In this paper we concentrate on annotation and retrieval of web content, exploiting semantic tagging with DBpedia. We use semantic information stored in the DBpedia dataset and propose a new hybrid ranking system to rank keywords and to expand queries formulated by the user. Inputs of our ranking system are (i) the DBpedia dataset; (ii) external information sources such as classical search engine results and social tagging systems. We compare our approach with other RDF similarity measures, proving the validity of our algorithm with an extensive evaluation involving real users. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
