Improving Operational Intensity in Data Bound Markov Chain Monte Carlo
Typically, parallel algorithms are developed to leverage the processing power of multiple processors simultaneously speeding up overall execution. At the same time, discrepancy between \{DRAM\} bandwidth and microprocessor speed hinders reaching peak performance. This paper explores how operational intensity improves by performing useful computation during otherwise stalled cycles. While the proposed methodology is applicable to a wide variety of parallel algorithms, and at different scales, the concepts are demonstrated in the machine learning context. Performance improvements are shown for Bayesian logistic regression with a Markov chain Monte Carlo sampler, either with multiple chains or with multiple proposals, on a dense data set two orders of magnitude larger than the last level cache on contemporary systems.Part of the work presented in this paper was funded by Johnson & Johnson. Global evolution of female authorships in anesthesiology articles: an affiliation-based, longitudinal, scientometric analysis
Abstract Background Although a gender gap in anesthesiology articles has been reported in certain subsets of anesthesiology literature, a comprehensive analysis is still lacking. Our objective was to conduct a scientometric analysis of the evolution of gender equity among anesthesiology authors worldwide, including all available affiliations. We hypothesized that gender inequity has diminished over time, with relevant differences among countries. Methods The MEDLINE/PubMed 2024 Baseline Repository was queried for all articles whose authors were affiliated with a department of anesthesiology. Author positions were sequenced into first, co-authors, and senior authors. Gender was inferred using online classification tools (genderize.io and gender-api.com). Geolocation was identified through text mining of the first author’s affiliation. The primary endpoint was the evolution of female authors from 1987 to 2023, calculated descriptively and by average annual growth rates. Secondary endpoints included the proportion of female authors in first or senior author position, the influence of senior authors’ gender on first authors’ gender, geographical differences, and future projections of parity (defined as 50% female authors). Results Among 374,301 anesthesiology articles and 7,574 journals, the proportion of female authors increased from 13.6% (1987) to 34.3% (2023) with an average annual growth of 0.57% (95%-confidence interval 0.38% − 0.77%). First authors were female in 30.0% and senior authors in 20.7%, with increases from 11.7% (1987) to 36.9% (2023), and from 11.0% (1987) to 25.9% (2023), respectively. Female authors were overall more likely to be first authors when the senior author was also female. In 2023, only Thailand and Portugal had a percentage of female authors over 50%. Tunisia achieved the highest average annual growth rate of female authors at 2.28% (95%-CI 1.51% − 3.06%). Based on the assumption that current trends continue unchanged, overall gender parity is estimated to be achieved by 2050, for first authors by 2043 and for senior authors by 2072. Conclusions Despite an increase in recent decades, women are still underrepresented as authors in academic anesthesiology, particularly in leading authorship positions. While relevant differences between countries exist, strategies addressing this gender gap at a country-specific level are needed to promote female authorship in academic anesthesiology
Biodegradable coffee capsules at the Austrian and European market stall 2017
Abstract
Biodegradable plastic - these words are currently on everyone's lips. It seems to be the solution of the waste problem with plastics. Plastics which turn into compost after use. The author of this work searched on the Austrian market which coffee capsules that are biodegradable are available. Which symbol could find the consumer at the packaging that informed him, that this product is bio-degradable?
The aim of this work was to find out, with Mr. Paolo Battiston, Senior Product Manager of Constantia Flexibles, if the promise of the products fulfills their promises.
For this purpose, all biodegradable coffee capsules were collected and purchased. In Constantia's technical laboratories, they were analyzed for their material composition.
There are many misconceptions about the terms:
• Biodegradable
• Compostable
• Bio-based plastics.
To address this problem, the author explains in this work these terms. It will be discussed which factors and which mechanisms of action are relevant in composting. An overview of the applicable standards and their content should bring an understanding of the standards building certificates.
The result of the research was that all analyzed capsules require additional packaging. The awards on the packaging were very misleading. It is not visible to a consumer that the buying of these products will help to reduce the waste.
This work was the starting point of a master-thesis at the BOKU Vienna. Mr. Anton Rameder did a Master's thesis under the supervision of Professor Huber-Hummer (Head of the Institute for Waste Management at the BOKU Vienna) "Investigation of the Compost ability of Coffee Capsules from Biodegradable Materials by FTIR Spectroscopy". This master thesis was based on this bachelor thesis. All of the coffee capsules listed here were examined during the master thesis of their compost ability.
The Bachelor Thesis II by Thomas Nemeth will deal with the results of the master thesis of Mr. Rameder and will discuss them with different subject matter expert
STJEPKO TEŽAK – AUTHOR OF PRIMARY SCHOOL TEXTBOOKS
Writing textbooks was only one of Stjepko Težak's activities. His Croatian textbooks were used by generations to learn standard Croatian.
Methodological underpinnings determined by a functional approach and a linguistic and communication system influenced his numerous Croatian language textbooks. This refers to the use of drawings, cartoons, figures, schemas, language games, humour, jocular poems and stories, as well as students' work. Težak also used a methodologically based, figurative and metaphorical presentation of grammar terms to make grammar more student-friendly. His latest textbooks illustrate a more relaxed and a more playful approach, trying to make them the books for students and not for teachers.
Most of his textbooks are written for the fifth to eight grade primary schools, even though he wrote a wide range of textbooks for all grades of primary and secondary school. His textbook-work, both theoretical and practical, made him one of the authorities in the theory and practice of making Croatian textbooks
Simultaneous Electrical and UHF Measurement of DC-PD from Point-Plane Defect
Partial Discharges (PD) have long been studied under AC field stress and are widely accepted as a good indicator of component health. However, the advent of HVDC brought new challenges, as the pre-existing knowledge in the area of PD is not applicable to DC. The discharge behavior has been found to be erratic and there is no plausible evidence yet, that correlates discharges with insulation deterioration. The inability to produce stable behavioral patterns in DC-PD has also led to a spark in interest in the application of several non-conventional measuring methods, e.g. the measurement using UHF sensors. Therefore, this paper deals with the measurement of time synchronized PD measurements through conventional electrical and UHF methods for a novel comparison of DC discharge patterns generated by a needle-plate electrode arrangement in air. The different configurations of the defect are studied under both voltage polarities and the observations are discussed in terms of pulse magnitude and repetition rate. In addition, this paper exploits the opportunities of computational power for post-processing to obtain Pulse Sequence Analysis (PSA) diagrams of the discharge data.DC systems, Energy conversion & Storag

The Genius of Ordinary People: How the Ferguson Collaborative Became the Voice of the Community
As the nation marks five years since the police killing of teenager Mike Brown and the series of protests known as the Ferguson Uprisings, a group of residents in Ferguson, MO, have been working locally since 2014 to take back their power. They refer to themselves as the Ferguson Collaborative and we are proud to shine a spotlight on our grassroots partner in our new report, "The Genius of Ordinary People: How the Ferguson Collaborative Became the Voice of the Community."The report, the first from our Justice Project program, examines how a group of Ferguson community members became activists, changing the City's unconstitutional policing and criminal legal system practices. This group of residents and allies have spent the last five years putting the pressure on local and federal policymakers and courts, ousting a court-appointed official, rallying for the dismissal of thousands of municipal court cases and positioning themselves in powerful seats – including the Ferguson City Council

The influence of electoral systems on party systems. Comparison of Polish, Slovak, German and Austrian Case.
The author is interested in electoral and political system in Poland, Slovakia, Germany and Austria. At the beginning he rises two basic questions which he would like to answer - Which electoral method is similar to contemporary electoral systems in chosen countries in a result? And how would be changed political-party- system, i f there were another electoral methods? In the General the author offers a detailed look at the analysis of the types of electoral systems, franchise and party systems. This General part is assumption for the Special part which is focused on an research. In the fourth Chapter the author describes electoral systems in Poland, Slovakia, Germany and Austria and in the fifth Chapter he describes party system in those chosen countries. The own research starts in the sixth chapter. The author analyses the results of the last election in Poland (2005), Slovakia (2006), Germany (2005) and Austria (2006) by index of deformation, index Loosemore - Hanby, and index of aggregation. In the next Chapters author analyses parliamentary electoral results in four countries, then he follows new electoral methods (D'Hondt, Imperiáli, Saint Laguě, Hare, Hagenbach-Bischoff) on those results in Poland (2005), Slovakia (2006), Germany (2005) and Austria (2006). In the last Chapter author resumes the..
