Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Prototype development of a fogging evaporative cooler for indoor thermal comfort in the CPU Engineering student council office
Abstract onlyThis research tackles the growing issue of indoor thermal discomfort in tropical regions by designing, assembling, and evaluating a fogging evaporative cooler prototype for the Engineering Student Council Office at Central Philippine University in Iloilo City. Due to increasing global temperatures and elevated humidity in the Philippines, traditional air conditioning systems consume a significant amount of energy and are expensive. The evaporative cooler with fogging features a 50-liter water reservoir, a 12-head ultrasonic mist generator (8.4 kg/hr fog production), a chassis fan, and a stand fan, designed as an energy-saving option. The cooling load for the office was determined to be 4405.18 W (5.91 HP) utilizing psychrometric analysis and evaluations of thermal load.
Testing in both open (ventilated) and closed (sealed) setups during 8-hour operation periods showed temperature decreases of 0.6–1.1°C (for open) and 1.2–3.0°C (for closed) when compared to outdoor maximums of 31.1°C. While the desired conditions of 24°C and 50% relative humidity (RH) were not met, indoor temperatures settled between 27–30.9°C. Humidity increased to 68–73% RH (open) and 84–90% RH (closed), underscoring the essential role of ventilation in managing moisture. The system used 0.8 L/h of water (6.4 L overall) and functioned at ₱67.80/day (0.565 kW total power).
Despite its affordability and low energy consumption, the research does not recommend the prototype for practical application. Rather, it serves as an exploratory study that reveals the performance limitations of fog-based evaporative cooling in humid indoor conditions. Design, fabrication and testing of a stand alone one-hundred watt hybrid wind-solar power generation system prototype
Abstract onlyThis paper presents the design, fabrication, and testing of a standalone one-hundred-watt hybrid wind-solar power generation system prototype. The proposed prototype combines the power generated from wind and solar energy to create a reliable and efficient off-grid power solution. The design of the hybrid system incorporates a charge controller for wind and solar, battery bank, wind turbine, solar panel and inverter to manage the energy flow and provide a stable power output. The fabrication of the prototype involved the construction and integration of the wind turbine and solar panel. The mechanical components were carefully assembled, and electrical connections were established following standard practices to ensure safe and efficient operation. The testing phase involved evaluating the performance and efficiency of the hybrid system prototype under various operating conditions using the wind tunnel. Performance parameters such as power output, voltage, and energy conversion efficiency, wind speed, solar irradiance, were measured and analyzed. The prototype was subjected to different wind speeds and solar irradiance levels to assess its ability to harness and convert renewable energy into usable electrical power. The experimental results demonstrated that the hybrid wind-solar power generation system prototype achieved reliable and efficient operation, generating a stable output of 15 watts, and a 100 watt load for duration of at least 3 hours. The system exhibited normal energy conversion efficiency. The battery bank effectively stored excess energy for later use, ensuring continuous power supply even during periods of low wind or solar availability.
