The English article system is not only so complex that philosophers and linguists have difficulties in agreeing on the underlying notions designated by the different forms, but also so different from the Vietnamese article system that it must be almost impossible for students recognize and remember the underlying its rules and conventions. Therefore, the author attempts to find out an effective way to teach English article, namely definite ‘the’ and generic ‘the’. To conduct this research, the author used a questionnaire to survey the meaning and use of English articles, a pretest to analyze the errors of using English articles before treatment, and a post-test to determine which group performs better (the control group or the experimental group) after treatment of 80 students at BVU. The paper compared the theories of traditional grammar and cognitive lessons insight cognitive grammar to experiment on the two groups

Author manuscript, published in "Proc. TRECVID Workshop (2013)" Quaero at TRECVid 2013: Semantic Indexing

The Quaero group is a consortium of French and German organizations working on Multimedia Indexing and Retrieval1. LIG participated to the semantic indexing main task, localization task and concept pair task. LIG also participated to the organization of this task. This paper describes these participations which are quite similar to our previous year’s participations. For the semantic indexing main task, our approach uses a six-stages processing pipelines for computing scores for the likelihood of a video shot to contain a target concept. These scores are then used for producing a ranked list of images or shots that are the most likely to contain the target concept. The pipeline is composed of the following steps: descriptor extraction, descriptor optimization, classification, fusion of descriptor variants, higher-level fusion, and re-ranking. We used a number of different descriptors and a hierarchical fusion strategy. We also used conceptual feedback by adding a vector of classification score to the pool of descriptors. The best Quaero run has a Mean Inferred Average Precision of 0.2848, which ranked us 2nd out of 26 participants. We also co-organized the TRECVid SIN 2013 task and collaborative annotation. 1 Participation to the organization of the semantic indexing task For the Fourth year, UJF-LIG has co-organized the semantic indexing task at TRECVid with the support of Quaero. A list of 500 target concepts has been produced, 346 of which have been collaboratively annotated by the participants and by Quaero annotators. A subset of 60 of them was selected for participants’ submissions and 38 of which have been officially evaluated. The 500 concepts are structured according to the LSCOM hierarchy [14]. They include all the TRECVi

[EN] In the 21st century, technology is one of the essential parts of life; the number of smartphones, smart-cars, smartwatches, and even smart homes are increasing every year. These devices help us to have a comfortable experience. Due to the high demand from the tech market, vital questions companies must consider are as follows: how to meet customers’ needs? How is technology changing? What is the nature of experience between humanity and technology? Also, when culture shifts, the industry must follow suit. Especially, the end-users are easily frustrated by apps which do not meet their expectation or do not function the way they expected them to. Crowdsourcing is known as a wonderful method for tech companies to improve their end-user experience. In about ten years in crowd testing, Applause has never missed a chance to catch up with the best solution for tech companies. The company has two tactics to approach their customers in terms of digital experience perspective. The first tactic seeks for a community of vetted quality assurance professionals and experienced to find any bugs or technical issues that may have missed. It brings trust from the clients because Applause shows them that the company is able to cover every problem. The second tactic assembles novice people, who does not have QA background. However, those people could leverage their fresh opinion. Based on fascination about technology trend and an innovative business model about testing service, the author attempts to better understand Applause’s solution and what could they do to develop their products. Working at Applause every day since September 2018 until now, the author realizes that the company can help their clients deliver excellent digital products. Applause has a big testers community with roughly 500,000 people across the globe, confirming that their clients can have deep insight internationally or on a certain location scale. This thesis illustrates the internal and external impact of Applause’s business, how the company can expand their product portfolio, and what they should improve in their internal environment. The result of this paper firmly agrees that the Asian market is the most potential market for Applause in terms of new market development. Tran, TH. (2019). Spatial distribution of, and risk factors for, Opisthorchis viverrini infection in southern Lao PDR

    No full text
BACKGROUND: Opisthorchis viverrini is a food-borne trematode species that might give rise to biliary diseases and the fatal cholangiocarcinoma. In Lao PDR, an estimated 2.5 million individuals are infected with O. viverrini, but epidemiological studies are scarce and the spatial distribution of infection remains to be determined. Our aim was to map the distribution of O. viverrini in southern Lao PDR, identify underlying risk factors, and predict the prevalence of O. viverrini at non-surveyed locations. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional parasitological and questionnaire survey was carried out in 51 villages in Champasack province in the first half of 2007. Data on demography, socioeconomic status, water supply, sanitation, and behavior were combined with remotely sensed environmental data and fed into a geographical information system. Bayesian geostatistical models were employed to identify risk factors and to investigate the spatial pattern of O. viverrini infection. Bayesian kriging was utilized to predict infection risk at non-surveyed locations. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The prevalence of O. viverrini among 3,371 study participants with complete data records was 61.1%. Geostatistical models identified age, Lao Loum ethnic group, educational attainment, occupation (i.e., rice farmer, fisherman, and animal breeder), and unsafe drinking water source as risk factors for infection. History of praziquantel treatment, access to sanitation, and distance to freshwater bodies were found to be protective factors. Spatial patterns of O. viverrini were mainly governed by environmental factors with predictive modeling identifying two different risk profiles: low risk of O. viverrini in the mountains and high risk in the Mekong corridor. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: We present the first risk map of O. viverrini infection in Champasack province, which is important for spatial targeting of control efforts. Infection with O. viverrini appears to be strongly associated with exposure the second intermediate host fish, human behavior and culture, whereas high transmission is sustained by the lack of sanitatio

Nanoarchitectonics of the cathode to improve the reversibility of Li–O(2) batteries

    No full text
The strategic design of the cathode is a critical feature for high-performance and long-lasting reversibility of an energy storage system. In particular, the round-trip efficiency and cycling performance of nonaqueous lithium–oxygen batteries are governed by minimizing the discharge products, such as Li(2)O and Li(2)O(2). Recently, a metal–organic framework has been directly pyrolyzed into a carbon frame with controllable pore volume and size. Furthermore, selective metallic catalysts can also be obtained by adjusting metal ions for outstanding electrochemical reactions. In this study, various bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)-derived carbons were designed by varying the ratio of Zn to Co ions. Moreover, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are added to improve the electrical conductivity further, ultimately leading to better electrochemical stability in the cathode. As a result, the optimized bimetallic ZIF–carbon/CNT composite exhibits a high discharge capacity of 16,000 mAh·g(−1), with a stable cycling performance of up to 137 cycles. This feature is also beneficial for lowering the overpotential of the cathode during cycling, even at the high current density of 2,000 mA·g(−1)
