Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. No full textBackground: Urbanicity, immigration and winter-birth are stable epidemiological risk factors for schizophrenia, but their relationship to schizotypy is unknown. This is a first examination of the association of these epidemiological risk factors with positive schizotypy, in non-clinical adolescents, controlling for a range of potential and known confounders. Methods: We collected socio-demographics, lifestyle, family and school circumstances, positive schizotypy dimensions and other personality traits from 445 high school pupils (192 males, 158 immigrants) from 9 municipalities in Athens and Heraklion, Greece, which covered a range of host population and migrant densities. Using multivariate hierarchical linear regressions models, we estimated the association of schizotypy dimensions with 1) demographics of a priori interest (winter-birth, immigrant status, urban characteristics), including family financial and mental health status 2) factors resulting from Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of the demographic and personal data and 3) factors resulting from PCA of the personality questionnaires. Results: Females scored higher on schizotypy than males. High Anxiety/Neuroticism was the most consistent and significant predictor of all schizotypy dimensions in both genders. In the fully adjusted models, urbanicity predicted magical thinking and unusual experiences in females, while winter-birth and immigration predicted paranoid ideation and unusual experiences respectively in males. Conclusions: These results support the continuum hypothesis and offer potential insights in the nature of risk conferred by winter-birth, urbanicity and immigration and the nature of important gender differences. Controlling for a wide range of potential confounding factors increases the robustness of these results and confidence that these were not spurious associations.Πλαίσιο: Το αστικό περιβάλλον διαβίωσης, η μετανάστευση και η γέννηση ενός ατόμου κατά τη διάρκεια του χειμώνα αποτελούν σταθερούς επιδημιολογικούς παράγοντες κινδύνου για την ανάπτυξη σχιζοφρένειας μολονότι η συσχέτισή τους με την σχιζοτυπία παραμένει ακόμη άγνωστη. Το παρόν σύγγραμμα αποτελεί την πρώτη διερεύνηση της συσχέτισης αυτών των επιδημιολογικών παραγόντων κινδύνου με τη θετική σχιζοτυπία, σε μη ασθενείς έφηβους, ελέγχοντας παράλληλα τον ρόλο διάφορων πιθανών συγχυτικών παραγόντων. Μέθοδοι: Συλλέξαμε κοινωνικο-δημογραφικά στοιχεία, δεδομένα οικογενειακής και σχολικής ζωής, διαστάσεις θετικής σχιζοτυπίας και άλλα χαρακτηριστικά προσωπικότητας από 445 μαθητές λυκείου (192 αγόρια, 158 μετανάστες) από 9 δημοτικά διαμερίσματα στην Αθήνα και το Ηράκλειο Κρήτης, που κάλυψαν ένα εύρος γηγενή πληθυσμού και μειονοτικών εθνικοτήτων. Κάνοντας χρήση πολυπαραγοντικών μοντέλων ιεραρχικών γραμμικών παλινδρομήσεων, εκτιμήσαμε τη συσχέτιση των διαστάσεων της σχιζοτυπίας με 1) δημογραφικά στοιχεία κύριου ερευνητικού ενδιαφέροντος (χειμερινός μήνας γέννησης ατόμου, μεταναστευτική ιδιότητα, χαρακτηριστικά διαβίωσης ατόμου σε αστικό περιβάλλον), συμπεριλαμβανομένης της οικονομικής κατάστασης της οικογένειας του ατόμου και της ψυχικής του υγείας 2) παράγοντες που προέκυψαν από την Principal Component Analysis (PCA) των λοιπών δημογραφικών και προσωπικών δεδομένων και 3) παράγοντες που προέκυψαν από την PCA των ερωτηματολογίων προσωπικότητας. Αποτελέσματα: Τα κορίτσια παρουσίασαν υψηλότερα ποσοστά σχιζοτυπίας συγκριτικά με τα αγόρια. Το Υψηλό Άγχος / Νευρωτισμός αποτέλεσαν τον πιο συνεπή και σημαντικό προγνωστικό παράγοντα όλων των διαστάσεων σχιζοτυπίας και στα δύο φύλα. Στα πλήρως προσαρμοσμένα μοντέλα, η διαβίωση σε αστικό περιβάλλον προέβλεψε τη Μαγική Σκέψη και τις Ασυνήθιστες Εμπειρίες στα κορίτσια, ενώ η γέννηση κατά τη διάρκεια χειμερινού μήνα και η μετανάστευση προέβλεψαν τον Παρανοειδή Ιδεασμό και τις Ασυνήθιστες Εμπειρίες κυρίως στα αγόρια. Συμπεράσματα: Τα ερευνητικά αυτά ευρήματα υποστηρίζουν την υπόθεση του «συνεχούς φάσματος» από την σχιζοτυπία στην σχιζοφρένεια και προσφέρουν πιθανές επεξηγήσεις για 1) τη φύση του κινδύνου που δημιουργούν η γέννηση κατά τη διάρκεια του χειμώνα, η διαβίωση σε αστικό περιβάλλον και η μετανάστευση και 2) τη φύση των σημαντικών διαφορών ανάμεσα στα 2 φύλα. Ο έλεγχος ενός μεγάλου εύρους πιθανών συγχυτικών παραγόντων αυξάνει την σημαντικότητα των προαναφερθέντων ευρημάτων και την πεποίθηση ότι αποτελούν αληθείς και μη τυχαίες συσχετίσεις

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
