Prokop in the Bath: Some Observations on the Liber diurnus de gestis Bohemorum in Concilio Basileensi

On Wednesday, 21 January 1433 Prokop Holý took a bath. There was nothing unusual about this. Medieval men did occasionally bathe and Prokop had been in the field for some years directing the Hussite armies. Still, the author of a medieval chronicle went to the bother of recording this otherwise mundane exercise of personal hygiene. The bath is certainly unremarkable but the occasion for the bath compels our attention. Prokop had recently undertaken a long journey from Prague to Basel, a distance of some 571 kilometres (355 miles). But he had arrived in Basel on Sunday 4 January - two-and-a-half weeks or a full eighteen days earlier - and certainly had time to bathe before the 21st. One might argue that only now did Prokop have the opportunity to enjoy a bath. Indeed, Prokop and his contingent of delegates to the Council of Basel faced a rather gruelling schedule but a glance at the "day book of the deeds of the Czechs at the Council of Basel" reveal no formal activities on either Tuesday the 6th or Sunday the 11th of the month. Moreover, the 'Liber diurnus' (diary) reveals that on Monday the 5th, Prokop had the day free until about four in the afternoon. On the 7th there were no scheduled conferences with the conciliar fathers. On Friday the 16th, business sessions appear to have recessed by lunch time for the remainder of the day. Even on days when the delegates were in session with the council they were not in continuous meetings from sunrise to sundown. In other words, Prokop surely had plenty of opportunity to bath before Wednesday, 21 January. It seems unavoidable that Prokop's bath was an excuse, albeit a feeble one, for not attending the council session on that day. This raises the question of why Prokop might wish to absent himself on that occasion

Gaining Independence of Clients of Facilities of Alternative Education Care in International Comparison

    No full text
Gaining independence of clients in the system of the alternative education care is the cardinal topic of the work. Within the framework of the international comparison, the author analyses and makes a survey of the problems accompanying this process. The work does not contain only the conclusions the author came to based on the research in chosen countries (Czech Republic and Poland) but also presents suitable recommendations how the problem of gaining independence of clients of the alternative education care can be solved. The introductory part is applied to theoretical solutions, the international comparisons and examples of a good practice abroad. The author follows opinions of different experts in causalities of the problem from the influence of the biological family through socialization of the clients of the education care to the very problems of the institutional care. He presents these opinions subsequently in the context. In the methodological and research parts the author tries to answer the cardinal question: "What is way the clients of the alternative education care are prepared in order to gain independence?" Within the framework of the qualitative design of the research, the author is mediating the readers the real situation which the clients gaining independence and their carers are..

The Emergence and Stability of Heterogeneous Cartels

    No full text
The article focuses on the emergence and operation of cartels in sectors in which companies differ in terms of production costs. The authors show that stable cartels can operate in sectors made up of enterprises that are heterogeneous in terms of costs and based on price leadership. However, when it comes to the cartel formation process, there is a distinct difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous sectors, Prokop says. While the formation of a cartel in the case of homogenous firms may be difficult due to the “free-rider” problem, the author notes, in the case of heterogeneous companies no such obstacles exist and it can be expected that the process of creating a stable cartel will end in success. The analysis was made using the author’s own model of the cartel formation process in the form of a single-period non-cooperative game with simultaneous decisions made by participants. To investigate the behavior of enterprises in the formation and operation of cartels, the Nash equilibrium concept was used. On the basis of the results obtained, it can be concluded that in the case of a sector with heterogeneous enterprises, the role of antitrust offices significantly increased in comparison to markets with homogenous firms, Prokop says. The theoretical analysis made by the author is illustrated with a case study for a district heating pipe cartel

Title: Cesty k jednotě za současného stavu ekumenismu Author: Jiří Suchomel Supervisor_ ThLic. Prokop Brož, Th.D. Annotation: Thish work deals with the models of church unity, as they were de- fined and developed during modern ecumenical movement throughout the 20th century. It describes three basic models -the cooperative-federal model, the or- ganic union, and the model of mutual recognition - and centers around the last one. Some known realizations of the mutual recognition model are presented and discussed (Leuenberg Agreement, Porvoo Common Statement, Meissen Common Statement), together with the ecumenical position of the Roman Catholic Church. Keywords: ecumenism, models of unity, communio, Leuenberg Agreement, The Porvoo Declaratio

<i>Palaeostena eocenica</i> (Kubisz, 2003) comb. nov. <p>(Figs 2A–C, 10B)</p> <p> <i>Falsomordellistena</i> (<i>Palaeostena</i>) <i>eocenica</i> Kubisz, 2003: 186. Holotype:</p> <p>J, Baltic amber.</p> <p> <b>Material examined.</b> One specimen, PřfUK107, obtained from Jonas Damzen (original number JDC 8742):? Rovno amber. The specimen conforms with the description and figures of <i>P. eocenica</i> and is thus considered to be conspecific. It represents the first possible record of this species from Rovno amber.</p> <p> <b>Comments on identification.</b> The author compared this species with extant members of <i>Falsomordellistena</i> because of the similar shape of their antennomeres. However, antennae in Mordellidae are often similar in different genera (see below for an example of a different diagnosis of <i>Baltistena concava</i> sp. nov.). In addition, in males of species of <i>Falsomordellistena</i> antennomeres V–X vary greatly in shape (from feebly serrate to filiform) and are usually 2× as long as wide or longer (e.g., NOMURA 1967, 1975), while in <i>Palaeostena eocenica</i> they are only ‘one half longer than wide’, which must be considered a difference rather than a similarity.</p> <p> KUBISZ (2003) also lists several characters of <i>P</i>. <i>eocenica</i>, in which this species should differ from all extant <i>Falsomordellistena</i> species: eyes without interfacetal setae; peculiar shape of maxillary palpomere IV (surprisingly, its length is compared with the length of basal antennomeres, not palpomeres); asymmetry of metatibial spurs; absence of body pubescence; and body size. Only the last three of these differences are included in the diagnosis of this species, as according to the author, they delimit <i>P</i>. <i>eocenica</i> from all known species of <i>Falsomordellistena</i>. In summary, KUBISZ (2003) states that <i>P</i>. <i>eocenica</i> differs from extant species of <i>Falsomordellistena</i> in at least five characters usually used for delimiting genera and therefore its inclusion into this extant genus would invalidate the generic diagnosis.</p> <p> Accepting the validity of this species and the fact that its generic assignment to <i>Falsomordellistena</i> is not supported by the given diagnosis, the subgenus <i>Palaeostena</i> is here raised to generic status.</p>Published as part of <i>Batelka, Jan, Rosová, Kateřina & Prokop, Jakub, 2023, Diversity and morphology of Eocene and Oligocene Mordellidae (Coleoptera), pp. 451-478 in Acta Entomologica Musei Nationalis Pragae 63 (2)</i> on page 458, DOI: 10.37520/aemnp.2023.027, <a href="http://zenodo.org/record/10621277">http://zenodo.org/record/10621277</a&gt

Anglická anotace Name of Bachelor Thesis: Corpus Mysticum as a Relation between the Eucharist and the Church in the Work of Henri de Lubac Author: Ing. Daniel Klír, Ph.D. Faculty: Catholic Theological Faculty, Charles University in Prague Department: Department of Dogmatic and Fundamental Theology Thesis supervisor: Th.Lic. Prokop Brož, Th.D. Keywords: Body of Christ, Eucharist, Church, Middle Age, Henri de Lubac Abstract: The major concern of this bachelor thesis is the relation between the Eucharist and the Church in the work of Henri de Lubac. The thesis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter presents a brief summary of the life and work of Henri de Lubac. The second chapter delineates the origin and the basic evolution of the collocation corpus mysticum in the Middle Age. During this period, corpus mysticum signified firstly the sacramental body (9th century) and then, few centuries later, it started to signify the body, which is the Church (from 12th century). This change in the meaning of the expression in question was initiated by the Berengarian controversy. The third chapter explains the precise mean-ing of the relevant terms and texts which are important for the relation between the Eucharist and the Church. It concentrates on throwing more light on the change which took place in the..
