The Milo Can Opener
BLESSINGS IN THE COUNTRYSIDE
This is our first issue back after two months not publishing due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
We want to wish everyone of our readers health and safety and to recognize how thankful
locals are to live where the beauty of the outdoors is closer and avoiding crowds is easy.
In all the years in the Alberta weather,
She still stands tall and proud in the prairie.
Imagine the stories she could tell....
The April and May editions of the Milo Can Opener were not published because of Covid-19 restrictions.
We have extended all subscriptions, including those sent out to advertisers, by two months. Thanks so much.

My thoughts... Rev. Gordon Cranch
When David's time to die drew near, he charged his son, Solomon, saying: "I am
about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, be courageous...
Most of us have experienced the loss of a loved one. Probably every detail of that
final day are etched forever in our memory. While you may have been in a daze,
certain memories, probably not even significant, remain. The walk down a hospital
corridor numb with the knowledge that your loved one is gone. Have you felt how
much like fear grief feels? I think that is why King David says these things to
Solomon, his successor as king. If you are to be king, it is essential to be strong, to
be courageous, even in the face of grief.
If you remember, King David had lost more than one son already. He knew about
paralyzing grief, something that a new king could not have if he was to be the
leader that the country would need. Regardless of his natural feelings of grief for
his father, Solomon would need to surmount that sadness. He would need to be
strong and courageous - for his father, for his family, for his people.
We, too, need to rise above whatever feeling of loss we are now experiencing in
this unanticipated time of trial and isolation. Even when our restrictions are lifted,
the world will not be the same as once it was. For some, jobs will be gone,
businesses will have failed, many will have suffered the loss of a loved one from
the COVID virus.
But we still must live courageously in spite of our sufferings. Sometimes it doesn't
seem possible. However, we have God's promise to us:
"Do not fear, for I am with you, do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will
strengthen you, I will help you...
June Services:
in these uncertain times, there are no scheduled services.
We look forward to meeting again soon.

The Library Misses Everyone During This Pandemic
Library & Archives Hosts a Milo Memories Night
On the evening of March 5th, 33 people gathered at the Library
for a showcase of contents, not only the Archives has collected
and processed, but also that of our local historian Neil Godkin’s
research.
Library & Archives Manager Joanne Monner demonstrated how
to access the records that have been processed with the Archives
Society of Alberta at https://albertaonrecord.ca/milo-library-
archives. Here you can search the many descriptions of
archival documents, photographs, and textual records that we
have fully processed.
Local historian Neil Godkin hard at work
with his research.
The individual item level is not on this database, but we do
have much of it scanned to be researched at the Library. The
original documents are properly stored and preserved in the
Archive Room and can be accessed upon appointment when
the Library is open.
Joanne Monner demonstrates scanned records, documents and photos.
Library & Archives Hosts a Milo Memories Night
Many thanks to the members of the Library Board and Friends for the delicious lunch provided for the event. The monetary
support provided by the Milo Lions Club with the creation of the Milo Lions Fellowship is fundamental for this ongoing
project.
We hope to do this again some Saturday afternoon providing more time for individuals to browse through the collection.

TRICKSTER THEATRE AT MILO SCHOOL
Milo School’s holiday performance this year was Thursday, December 19.
Students and staff worked with Trickster Theatre to develop the production that week.
The school gym was set up with the “stage” basically in the middle,
the audience seated around 3 sides, and the traditional stage was set up for a shadow play.
There were a number of different little plays by various grades,
singing and drumming in between sets by Alex Scalplock and the Natosapi drummers,
dancing with audience participation to a native dance and the Virginia reel,
the shadow play (picture above), and refreshments after.
A huge thank you to the many, many people who worked so hard to make this a special night!

My thoughts Rev. Gordon Cranch
I receive emails from the Society of St John the Evangelist monastery in
Cambridge, Mass. This is a summary of a bit of Monastic Wisdom from Br. David
Vryhof.
I have a memory of my fifth grade teacher asking us to write a short paragraph
describing the things in our lives for which we were thankful. I sat for the longest
time just staring at that piece of paper. I couldn't think of a thing for which I was
thankful.
I was surrounded by gifts, but didn't recognize them as gifts, and I couldn't begin
to express my gratitude for them. I naively assumed that everyone had food and
clothing, a loving family and a comfortable home. I was unaware of how
privileged I was to enjoy these gifts on a daily basis, and simply took them for
granted.
Gratitude springs from the awareness that we have been given a gift. Often this
awareness comes upon us in sudden and unexpected ways. We are walking along
and suddenly our breath is taken away by the beauty of autumn leaves, or we are
talking with a close friend and suddenly we realize what a gift this day is and how
unexpected and undeserving we are. Our lives have been enriched. We feel
grateful.
We can nurture a spirit of gratitude by cultivating our awareness that we are
surrounded by gifts. But to become aware of these gifts is not enough. Gratitude
moves beyond the recognition of the gift to the recognition of the giver. In some
ways, the gift itself is secondary in importance. What is more important is the
exchange that takes place when we express our gratitude. The offering of a gift is
only complete when we receive it with gratitude, and when that gratitude is
expressed. Without the expression of gratitude, something is missing, for both
the giver of the gift and the one who receives it.
We Christians proclaim that God is the giver of all good gifts. We acknowledge
that all that we have and all that we are is the result of God's divine goodness
and love. God is the giver of every good gift: the gifts of nature, the gifts we
receive in and through others, even the gifts of our selves.

A long-time member of the Milo
Community recently reached a milestone
birthday, and a milestone it is proving to
be for the whole community!
Jack Sutherland, a friend to many in
the district, has made a very generous donation
of 100,000 to the Lions Club of
Milo, recognizing the nearly 65 years of
service that this club has provided to Milo
and Queenstown. In the spirit of Mr. Sutherland's
donation, the Club has decided
that these funds will be directed toward
the Milo Community Hall Kitchen Renovation
Project, rehabilitating a facility that has
served the community well since 1985.
While this project is organized under the
auspices of the Milo & District Agricultural
Society (the organization that owns the
hall), President Lloyd Deitz graciously
thanked Mr. Sutherland, on behalf of Milo
Lions, at the milestone birthday celebration
on November 23rd.
December proved to be another busy month for
the club. Not unlike Wayne Newton in Las Vegas,
Milo's own Mr. Entertainment, Lion Greg Deitz, made
a come back tour as bingo caller at the Pancake Supper
and Turkey Bingo on December 6th. Fifteen turkeys
were won, funds were raised for club projects,
and the Milo School Council raised significant dollars
from their bake sale. Everyone was happy to see Lion Greg
back in action!
The Lions Christmas Party was on the third Wednesday
of December. A great turnout was had for this annual
Stag Night, celebrating the season with complementary
beer and loads of Chinese food. The Club would like to
thank Master Chef, Wayne Lin, for his contribution toward
the festivities! The dishes he

Children in Need
Our daughter, Janet, is working at Mother Theresa’s missionary in Calcutta, India. She helps out in the Daya Dan which is the orphanage for mentally and physically handicapped children from ages 4-13. These children have been abandoned by their families because of their handicaps.
Some of these children spend their days in a crib because they cannot move. The others have a small courtyard to play in or on the roof of the building. I spoke with Janet and asked what we could possibly send to make life a little bit better for these children. If anyone could help me out that would be great. She gave a few suggestions. They have a cassette player and Janet thought it would be nice to have some relaxing music to play to the children when they are massaging them. The children in the cribs could use crib mobiles so they have something to look. Cloth books would be great since the kids tend to put everything in their mouths and are hard on regular books. Although it is India it does get cool so warm cardigans would be much appreciated. The only thing to remember is that the clothes must be easy to put on as some of the kids have very stiff arms and legs and it makes it hard to dress them. One other thing Janet suggested is a jungle gym that could be collapsed right down flat. She was thinking of those cloth tunnels that have the wire in them. If anyone has any USED items (Janet doesn’t expect new) that would be wonderful. Please give me a call and I will come and pick up anything that you could donate.
Thank you so very much.

SOUTHERN ALBERTA’S REGIONAL LAW FIRMCOUNCILLOR S COMMENTS
These are my opinions and do not necessarily reflect Vulcan County policy or the views of other councillors.
The municipal planning committee (read County Council) have in conjunction with our planning advisor, came up with a map showing land use restrictions surrounding lakes, rivers, streams, hamlets, villages and towns. As most communities are adjacent to rail lines they are not "square" with the world. This makes them intrude into many 1\4 sections. The rule of thumb applied to the map is: If a 1\4 is intruded onto then the next 1\4 "going out" would be included in the restricted area in order to get the full required distance.
Now it is unlikely that a confined feeding facility would be built that close to a populated area but other uses that may eventually be included or unacceptable uses may eventually be. I am thinking of cow\calf wintering grounds, background pasture land, greenhouse, and any other use that people don’t want.
If you want to look at the map at the amount of land that would be restricted along a wandering stream, such as the West Arrowwood Creek for example, the possible restrictions would be huge and involve a lot of farm steads.
I believe this is unacceptable and personally can't support the proposed scenario. I would advise anyone with property adjacent to the above mentioned areas to look the map and see if it may affect you now or in the future. I have one.
The County office renovations are more or less on schedule and the new look is starting to be visible. The mild weather has certainly been an asset to the construction crew.
The Council has passed the budget for the upcoming year and there will be no increase. I did not support the budget finally approved, as I thought we were spending too much on some projects that are proposed. I am not opposed to the projects or such but think we should proceed slowly and develop a system that work for us, and then of it does, to expand it.

It was a breezy day in a warm, dry January as I made my way west, where I
found yet another retired piece of equipment, still standing proud, refusing
to rust into oblivion. This rake stood as a reminder of when farming was far
smaller, consisting of many more narrow passes across a field, exposed to
the elements. Rather than raking, its work was now to hold up a wire gate
when open. It was doing an excellent job.

MILO LIBRARY NEWSLETTER | MARCH 2022
Milo School News
Kirk's Corner
Well according to the Milo Mustang Groundhogs (a.k.a our
class pop up groundhogs), we have 6 more weeks of winter.
This past week of frigid weather sure made that prediction
accurate. In March we’ll be counting Lion (stormy cold weather)
and Lamb (mild nice weather) days. I don’t know about you, but
I am ready for “Lamb Days”. In March Paddy comes back! That
means we will be making traps for our building unit. Maybe this
year we will catch him :)
In language arts we are starting our research unit. This year
students will be researching animals that live in Alberta. They
will learn about “key ideas” and writing outlines from text. Then
they will use their outlines to write paragraphs. The final project
will be done on Google Slides.
In math we are continuing to practice and memorize basic
facts for addition and subtraction of facts families to 18. The
grade 1s will be adding one digit numbers up to 20, the grade
2s will be adding and subtracting 2 digit numbers, and grade 3s
will be adding 3 digit numbers. The grades 2-3 will learn how to
add and subtract with and without regrouping.
Science across the grades:
Grade 1 will be building mini objects of everyday things. We
will be learning different ways to attach items with glue, tape,
pipe cleaners, and paper clips. They will also complete a miniunit
in Spring. We will be looking for signs of spring to add to
our spring chart.

My thoughts... Revered c^ordouv Crfti/tch
I told those at church some time ago that Reese came
up to me at lunch one Sunday and asked me how to
get to heaven. I was kind of dumbstruck by the
question, especially as Reese is not yet 4. I gave a
suitably glib answer, but I continued to think about it
and on the next Sunday I gave a slightly more
• definitive answer.
I have been thinking about the question on and off ever since. I suppose it takes on a
slightly different sense of urgency at 72 than it does at age 4. All the songs and
hymns that we sing Sunday by Sunday about heaven and the great reunions with
those we have loved and have gone before us. But that doesn't answer the question of
how we get to heaven. Last month, we had our usual Maundy Thursday dinner and
went on to commemorate the Last Supper of Jesus and His disciples. At that time
Jesus gave us His directions for eternal life. This is His summary of the great
Commandments. "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and love your neighbour
as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." If we
can do just these two things everything else will fall into place. What surer path to
Heaven can there be?
All the promises that we have received are awaiting their fulfillment. We will be
reunited with those we have loved and lost. We will, with God's help, one day reach
that eternal shore.
Whatever age we are now, we are fortunate to have lived and grown up in such a time
of medical advances that have assisted us in living this long. And we look forward to
even greater advances that will offer longer and better lives to us.
We must always remember that our time on earth is limited and we must do our part
while we are here. But this life will surely end one day and we will die. The perishable
cannot inherit the imperishable.
That is how we get to heaven.

A sudden blizzard Saturday, March 7 stranded some locals on highways and forced many curlers to stay at the rink until they found accommodation at the hotel or the homes of village residents.
To pass the time at the rink, a barefoot curling competition was held as well as a late night feast on “rink burgers”.Ad Rates

Former driver to take the reins as new voice of the GMC Rangeland Derby
"This is truly the opportunity of a lifetime," says Mclntrye. "Since I was a child, my dream has been to be involved in the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. The GMC Rangeland Derby is the pinnacle of chuckwagon racing, and I look forward to bringing the action to fans, not only in the Grandstand every night, but also to people listening and watching around the world."
The 55-year-old McIntyre brings a wealth of chuckwagon and rodeo experience to his new position, high in the Eye in the Sky at Stampede Park. As a youngster, he started by sweeping stalls before becoming a trainer, a wagon driver and wagon advertiser. He eventually called his first chuckwagon race in 1985. For the past 24 years, he's called hundreds of races yearly on the World Professional Chuckwagon Association (WPCA) and Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) circuits. McIntyre is also a seasoned rodeo announcer and has been the professional voice of the Canadian Finals Rodeo in Edmonton for the past six years.
"Les is an outstanding ambassador for both the sport of chuckwagon racing and the sport of rodeo," says Paul Rosenberg, Calgary Stampede vice president. "With his experience as both a competitor and announcer, we know that our fans will be professionally entertained and informed every heat and every night at this year's Stampede and for years to come."
When not calling chuckwagon races or rodeo, McIntyre is a well-respected livestock and farm sale auctioneer, a career he's been involved with for nearly 25 years.
Calgary - The Calgary Stampede is pleased to announce that veteran chuckwagon and rodeo announcer Les McIntyre is the new voice of the GMC Rangeland Derby. McIntyre becomes only the second person in Calgary Stampede chuckwagon history to call the races, taking the reins from the legendary Joe Carbury who retired in 2008 after 45 years.
Mclntrye will officially begin his new role by participating in the 2009 GMC Rangeland Derby Canvas Auction, March 19, 2009, in the Boyce Theatre on Stampede Park and will make his debut as the voice of the GMC Rangeland Derby at this year's Calgary Stampede, July 3-12.MILO COMMUNITY SCHOOL CURLING
Our grades 5-9's have completed another successful year of curling. Mr. Piot, Greg Deitz and Keith Deitz coached the weekly curling on Wednesday nights. We wound up our year with the Fun Bonspiel on Friday, March 13th. Luckily, we had no injuries on such a day. We had 5 teams and in our note, we asked teams to dress up. Most of teams did so with some great costumes. We had 'Construction' to 'Rock Bands' (get it?) to 'Charlie's Angels.' Everyone looked great. Lisa, that style and color suited you.
First place was won by Lisa Deitz' team, with Miriam Deitz' team taking 2nd place. Congratulations to everyone for curling so well and exhibiting great team spirit and sportsmanship. We hope you continue with your curling endeavours.. Everyone received a prize bag of goodies purchased at Milo Green Foods.
We'd like to say a special thank you to our sponsors for their cash donations enabling us to buy the 'prizes'. The sponsors are:

The Village Council has received and reviewed the comments from AECOM Engineering regarding the Analysis from Hasagawa Engineering for Crystal Blue Developments’ proposed use of the Village of Milo’s treated water system to supply their development on the west side of Lake McGregor. The comments from both Alberta Environment and AECOM Engineering reflect the Council’s opinion that the Analysis lacks critical basic information and is therefore inadequate for the purposes of assisting Council to make a decision on whether to enter into a formal agreement with Crystal Blue. Administration will advise Crystal Blue Developments of the need fora thorough and concise document, as well as forward copies of the reviews from Alberta Environment and AECOM for their consideration.
The Village Council has approved participation by Louis Myers and use of the Public Works Shop to facilitate a 75 hour work experience program for 3 of Milo Community School’s high school students. This practical experience program will focus on basic machinery / equipment maintenance and upkeep in a Public Works environment, basic wood working skills and basic turf and plant maintenance and care. Pending final approval from Palliser Regional Schools, the program will begin in Mid March 2009.
Milo has registered to participate in the 2009 Communities in Bloom competition. CiB Chairperson Louis Myers has reported that the Milo & District Agricultural Society is offering generous long term support for the program endeavours by donating 500 in municipal funding for 2009. The Council has also confirmed Mike Hingley to replace interim representative Barb Godkin as Milo’s municipal representative on the Chinook Arch Regional Libraries System Board. Librarian Joanne Monner presented Council with a copy of “Feliciter” magazine Volume 54 No. 6, a publication which links Canada’s information (library) professionals, which had a showcase article on the Milo Municipal Library and the Village of Milo. This magazine is now on display at the Village Office.
The Council passed resolution supporting by law changes by the Vulcan Business Development Society which would see municipal representation on the Board to be by Council appointed representation, with the representative not required to be an elected official of the municipality. It is hoped this change will increase attendance at meetings and the enthusiasm of the Board Members in general.
After fine tuning the 1st and 2nd readings of By Law #355, a bylaw for Public Tree Protection, the purpose of which is to control the removal and planting of trees on municipal property, the By Law was given 3rd and final reading and came into effect on January 19, 2009.
Allan Pasolli, the Program Co-Coordinator for the Vulcan Innovation Project attended the January meeting to bring Council up to date on the successes and projects planned and underway by the Rural Development Strategy funded program. These projects include offering a Teleconference Distance Education program for Basic Welding, a Technology Showcase in Vulcan on March 5, 2009, a new website for the Program and youth surveys and informal trades collaboration to determine what training opportunities are needed in Vulcan County.
Council learned that the 2009 requisition for the Vulcan District Solid Waste Commission will make a dramatic 109 per person. This increase is due largely to 1.00 and the complete construction of a new bike path and fence, the existing bike path has been sold to Alberta Transportation to allow for the road widening of Highway 542.
Council approved participation in the 2009 Lights Out for Earth Hour to show support for action on climate change. The Village of Milo commits to turn off all the non essential lights in Municipal buildings on March 28, 2009 from 8:30 - 9:30 p.m. to mark Earth Hour.Linear Property Assessments The Linear Property Assessment Roll for the 2009 Tax Year was reviewed by Council. The total linear
assessment has currently dropped 87,080 from $98,590 last year.
Council has reviewed a letter from community resident expressing concern that the Village of Milo website and the newly distributed Vulcan County Relocation Guide encourage tourists and newcomers to explore the area of the Coffin Handle Butte Legend which is located on private property and not meant to have public accessibility. The VBDS has advised that while the current edition of the Relocation Guide has already been published and is in distribution, any future versions will not make reference to the legend other than to advise that historical information can be obtained at the Milo Library. Council concluded that the information on the Village of Milo website concerning Coffin Handle Butte, though general in nature, could encourage trespassing on private land, and that this information should be edited as soon as possible to inform only of the legend itself and the Milo Library as a resource for further historical information.
Residential Water Line Break A water line break in the residence at 113 1st Street South was discovered by municipal employees
Vulcan & District EMS
on February 12, 2009. The property owner was notified and attempts were made to shut the water off at the curb stop; however the curb stop would not work, so the water main on 1st Street South was temporarily shut off to allow for the property owner and Townsman Myers to isolate and control the leak within the residence. The Village attempted to dig up the curb stop to repair it but the adjacent sewer line was damaged trying to manoeuvre around a tree and snow drifts on the property so further repairs will be delayed until spring when the snow and ice has cleared and the work site is open and accessible.
Council made a resolution to support the Vulcan and District EMS Society joining the Foothills Regional Emergency Medical Services to ensure the continued provision of emergency ambulance services to the residents of Vulcan County through the ground ambulance transition to the Government. This resolution will be forwarded to Vulcan County who will co-ordinate a submission to the Province to have the Vulcan & District EMS forming regulation amended.
Annexation
Village Planner (and also Oldman River Regional Services Commission Director) Lenze Kuiper attended the March 2009 meeting to discuss the annexation and Council’s concern and frustration with the continuing lack of progress and the serious implications these delays have. Mr. Kuiper advised that the final documents would be submitted to the Municipal Government Board immediately and that there will be no cost to the Village for the annexation as compensation for the admittedly slow and lacking service with the process.
McGregor / Travers Area Structure Plan
At the March 2009 meeting Council discussed proposed changes to the Travers-McGregor Reservoirs Area Structure Plan with our local Vulcan County Councillor Gord Nelson. The open dialogue centred on the implications that changes to the document since it was presented in Milo could have to proposed developments in the Milo area and what, if any, effect this might in turn have on the Village and community. Mr. Nelson encouraged Council members and Administration to attend the re-scheduled Public Hearing for this matter on April 1, 2008 in Council Chambers at the County office for complete information and an opportunity to make public comments on the Plan before it considered for adoption by the County Council.
Milo Waterworks System
Council reviewed the Compliance Inspection Report of the Milo Waterworks System and was pleased to see that the plant continues to be run in an acceptable manner by Operators Gerald Deitz and Stewart Whaley. The Inspector did however have concerns with the slow completion of upgrades of the system as required under the Current Alberta Environment Approval. Council directed Administration to follow up this concern by contacting the Engineer and moving the upgrade from the proposed to planning stage.

I don't want to panic anyone, but did you know that in just six short weeks we'll be into the Christmas school break?!! With Christmas just around the corner, we have already decided that December 9th will be the day we present our Christmas production so be sure to mark that date on your calendar. While I am on the topic of Christmas, this year the Milo School Staff and students will be participating in Operation Christmas Child. We will be packing shoeboxes with items suitable for children and then sending them to destinations in Central and South America where the hurricanes have been so devastating this fall. A sincere thank you to all who supported or are supporting us in this cause. Last Christmas item, I promise, the grade 1 and 2 class have been invited to sing at the Country Christmas Dinner on November 30th, so hopefully we will see you there!
On Thursday, October 21st, all of the Milo staff and students boarded four buses and enjoyed the day touring several important sites on the Siksika First Nation Reserve. Our first stop was the Siksika Resource Development Limited where we had a 30-minute tour. This building houses the offices of the oil, gas and environmental industries all of which are growing on the reserve. Next we met at the Band Office and enjoyed a tour of the Business Council Chambers. Third stop was the Arbour, a very interesting wooden structure where Pow Wows and other important ceremonial functions are housed. Then it was off to the Sports Plex for another tour. This is where we lunched also, and after lunch we were treated to stories from two elders who shared with us what it was like when they were children attending school. Last stop was the Okan ranch where in the past the Blackfoot people held their sun dances. We learned that "oki" means hello and that "Siksika*' means Blackfoot. We learned a little bit about the four colours on the Siksika logo. Blue represents the river (sometimes the sky), yellow the sun and green is the land. A sincere thank you to James Red Crow for organizing this event with the help of our tour guide Eulalia. A very big thank you to our bus drivers: Penny, Arvid, Wendy and Roxanne for getting us safely to our destinations and home again. Mrs. Patti Nicol-Pharo, our school counselor, was able to accompany us on our trip and she commented on what well behaved students we have at Milo School. She has been on many field trips and was very impressed with our well-mannered students.
Now on to the holiday that is second only to Christmas (from a child's perspective)—Halloween! On the afternoon of Thursday, October 28th, the Milo students and staff held their Halloween and costume parties in their respective classrooms. (Someone recently reminded me that it was this week last year that we had a “snow day" at Milo School courtesy of Mother Nature and the Halloween activities were all cancelled.) This year our afternoon activities included a costume parade, a tour through the haunted house, a craft activity and juice and snacks. We also had each grade vote for their favourite costume from among their peers. The grade 1 winner was Desperado Chett, and the grade 2 winner was the “homemade big can of Adrienne Raid'. A big thank you to Mealane for preparing and serving the food. The Dracula dip was a favourite! Thank you to the parents (Singer, Donna, 6-Nel and Neal) who came in to assist with make-up and costumes. Thanks also to 6-Nel for supplying the paper cups, napkins and plates with the Halloween motifs. Oh yes, and thank you Cynthia, Adrienne and Miriam who surprised and treated the 142 and the 344 rooms to giant cookies! Despite the full moon, I think the students managed to exercise enough self-control to contain their excitement to a “slow boil" so the afternoon was manageable and enjoyed by everyone.
We will begin to practice the first week of November for our part in the Remembrance Day Service on the 10th at the cenotaph. Hope to see you there.

USED OIL is used in the production of asphalt.
OIL FILTERS are shredded and heated to a molten state. Then reused as material for other metal products such as rebar, nails, and wire.
ALUMINUM CANS are compressed into bales. Shredders chop the bales into pieces, magnetic separators remove steel and iron scrap. Paint and coatings are removed by hot air, then the cans are turned into molten aluminum. From an empty can to a full new one in your hand takes six to eight weeks.
GLASS is used three ways. Glass beads are added to paint for marking highways.
Only clear glass can be used for this product. "GlassSand", the name for the processed mixture used for fibreglass insulation. This product uses all colors of glass. The third is new containers, which require all colors of glass.
MILK JUGS are the most versatile and valuable for plastic recycling. Some of the many products made from milk jugs are plastic pipe, drainage tile, flower pots, plastic lumber for decking and picnic tables, new detergent bottles, lubricating oil pails, toys, cases, and other formed plastic products.
OIL JUGS are made into new containers, plastic flower pots, plastic pipe, guardrails, fence posts, and plastic patio furniture.
PAINT is separated between latex and oil base in large drums, and used as industrial primer.
750 kilograms (1650 lbs.) of waste per person per year goes into Alberta's Landfills
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
USED TIRES are actually quite versatile and more research is being done in regard to tractor and heavy equipment tires. Some of the products being made now are roofing tile, rubber stucco, interlocking bricks and flooring tile, rubber matting, crumb for playgrounds and athletic fields.
NEWSPAPERS become new newsprint, and molded food packaging such as egg trays and fruit packaging.
OFFICE PAPER is the most valuable. It's used in the manufacture of recycled printing and writing papers, and tissue products.

I over heard some preschoolers discussing their heritage. One with roots in Italy said he was Italian. Another said his Mother was French.
A third noted, “My family is from the country. So I must be Ranch.”

Our great niece was describing her kindergarten ‘boyfriend’. When I asked if he was tall, dark and handsome, she replied, “No, Sam’s hair is vanilla.”
***************************
As my shoeless daughter was running across the gravel ,1 asked why she was walking so slowly.
“Because,” she sighed, “I’m wearing my bald feet.”

“Mom’s putting her masks on to scare us,” my nephew,4, informed me as my
sister applied her mascara.

the Rev. Gordon Cranch
This summer has been a time of community celebrations. Lomond village celebrated their 100th anniversary with a weekend full of events and, most importantly, the sharing of memories from days gone by. This Sunday, August 7th, in Milo, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the new church, aptly named Hope, which replaced the original church, destroyed by fire January 9th, 1965. What an expression of faith that the congregation of that time decided that the church should be rebuilt. What a marvel that it took 18 months for the planning and building to result in a completed church at a cost of $30,000. The next Sunday, August 14th, the village of Milo will celebrate the 85th anniversary of its incorporation. I am always in favour of celebrating any occasion. We are given no assurance of anything other than today, so it is best that we celebrate each day that is given to us.
I pulled out the Snake Valley II history book and just a glance through its pages draws you into the story & history of a small prairie community, not all that unlike the one in which I grew up, although that was located in God's Country. (Saskatchewan, for those of you not up on your geography) I see the stores and businesses that were and are no more. I see the young men and women who served their nation in the world wars. I see the couples who celebrated their 40th, 50th wedding anniversaries. The stories that they could have told about life at the beginning of the century, the start of the community on the cold and unforgiving prairie. The sense of community and the fast friendships forged by the need to help or ask for help from ones neighbours. The faith that was required to leave their native land and head out for an adventure. How many of us would be prepared to leave all that we know and hold dear to set out for a foreign land and an uncertain future? I do not think that we give enough credit to those pioneers for all that they overcame, what they accomplished in only perhaps three generations.
What will the village of Milo be like in 2031? Where will you be in 2031? Where will I be in 2031? Notice the abundance of question marks? All we can be sure of is that God has a plan, and that plan will be revealed in His good time. He provided for our grandparents, parents and for us, and we can be assured that He will provide for our children, their children and for all generations to come. And for that we give thanks as well.

o Operator/Driver’s license
o Government photo identification card (for non-drivers)
• Types of Chief Electoral Officer-approved identification allowed under (B) must show the name and address of the elector and so examples of appropriate ID include:

The Canada Day long weekend brought out 8 teams to the volleyball tournament and with excellent weather on our side we had an awesome time. There are many people to thank for the event being such a success this year. Robert Phillips and the Milo Hotel for running the beer gardens, Michael Monner and the Sustainability Group for stepping up and running a great concession, Christopher Northcott for getting the tents set up for the event and the Milo Lions Club for taking them down. A huge thank you to those that helped get the court ready, Don Robbie for getting it cleaned up and spreading all of the sand and Doug Marks with Mark's Oilfield Services for donating a load of sand. I would also like to thank Chad Monner for helping haul the picnic tables and setting up the court for the event and thanks to Kyle Gauthier for lending the stereo equipment so that we could have music all weekend. A huge thank you to all of the community members for coming out and playing in the tournament. Hopefully we can keep the tournament around the same weekend next year and continue have a successful event every summer.'B' Event Winners - Deanna Heather Team

Dear Residents & Ratepayers,
Election Day in the Village of Milo will be Friday, August 19th, with voting between 10 AM and 8 PM at the Milo Community Hall. There are two candidates running for the position of councillor in this by-election. The term of office will be for just over one year, or until the general municipal election in October of 2017 when all three positions on the village council can be contested.
Residents of Arrowwood and Milo have one month remaining in which they can appeal their Assessment Notice. Should you wish to meet with the municipal assessor please notify myself directly, or leave a message for me at each municipal office.
The Milo council is aiming to finalize its 2016 Operating and Capital Budget, as well as the tax rate bylaw, this coming month. While payment of property taxes is due in Arrowwood at the end of August, in Milo the deadline for payment of property taxes will be the end of September. I am planning to have a General Meeting this fall whereupon we can provide an overview of village business and priorities, anticipating public feedback and input. If you wish to be notified by email of this General Meeting, please ensure that the village offices have your email address on file.
Much work and planning has gone into the 85th Village Anniversary and School Reunion in Milo. Come out and take part in the activities running from the 12th to the 14th of August, seeing all that the Milo Community has to offer while re-connecting with friends. I would like to thank all volunteers, especially Katie Walker and Barb Godkin, for their efforts in organizing this event.
Sincerely,
Christopher Northcott Chief Administrative OfficerVILLAGE OF
