Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Multidisciplinary rehabilitation in a complex case of Miller Fisher syndrome: a case report
Background: The Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rare acute autoimmune mediated polyradiculopathy. The syndrome can affect all nerve roots, including the cranial nerves, and cause a variety of motor and sensory deficits as well as autonomous dysfunction. The syndrome and eventually arising complications can lead to short- and long-term disabilities and affect the quality of life of patients. For this reason, patients often require rehabilitation, however, there is little evidence regarding rehabilitation available in literature, especially regarding the rare variant Miller Fisher syndrome.
Objectives and study design: The type of study chosen was the single case report. In the first part of the thesis the information available in the literature on Guillain-Barré syndrome and Miller Fisher syndrome and the available evidence on rehabilitation are summarized. The second part of the thesis has the objective of describing the clinical manifestations, the initial symptoms, the clinical course, and the multidisciplinary rehabilitation management of a case of Miller Fisher syndrome not yet described in the literature and followed by me during a period of clinical internship.
Case description: The patient is a 62-year-old man diagnosed with Miller Fisher syndrome. The clinical course was complicated by respiratory failure and sepsis. Intubation and mechanical ventilation as well as prolonged hospitalization in the intensive care unit were necessary. At the nadir, the patient presented motor deficits in all four limbs, head, and trunk control deficits, ophthalmoplegia, facial diplegia, dysphagia, dysarthria, and respiratory problems.
Intervention and outcome: The rehabilitation intervention was multidisciplinary and involved doctors, nurses, two physiotherapists, a speech therapist, and a psychologist. The interventions were aimed at motor recovery, recovery of the facial nerve, swallowing, vocalization, respiratory functions and on anxiety management. On discharge, the patient demonstrated significant functional recovery as measured by the Barthel Index, GBS Disability Scale and the Sunnybrook scale. In addition, the patient resumed walking, natural breathing, and oral nutrition.
Conclusions: The multidisciplinary rehabilitation intervention led to functional improvements of motor, respiratory, swallowing and vocalization abilities in a complex patient diagnosed with Miller-Fisher syndrome
The Graded School Speller: Part One
This is the first of several sequential books to help students with spelling and vocabulary. Five fables are presented in curious fashion. The five are AD (8-9) and TH, The Boys and the Frogs, FC, and DM (16-23). Each is presented in twenty-four disparate sentences on two pages. The book is surprising to me because it seems to belong to a series. Ginn and Company published several different sets of books for grade-school pupils, but Spaulding and Miller did not seem to be a part of their team. On the other hand, Spaulding published a series of grade-school books for Aldine in 1913. His co-author was Catherine Bryce. Is the series referred to here perhaps only a series of three spellers? This book has seen plenty of wear. One clever student has created a window on the first sheet that says Come in. Open the window, and you will see the face drawn on the title-page! The book once belonged to a young John in Las Vegas, New Mexico. This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Frank E. Spaulding and William D. Mille

Weaving Practice Into History: An Interview with Professor of Music, Leta Miller
The Regional History Project conducted this oral history with Leta Miller, Professor of Music, as part of its University History Series. After earning a B.A. from Stanford University in music, an M.M in music history from the Hartt College of Music, and a PhD from Stanford University in musicology, Miller arrived at UC Santa Cruz in 1978. She began as a part-time lecturer, teaching a course in chamber music literature at College Eight and offering flute lessons in a tiny room with no window in the old music building. After several years teaching various classes for UCSC, including a music history survey course, in 1987 Miller applied for and was hired for a tenure-track position in the UCSC Music Department [then called the Music Board]. Miller is passionate about teaching, research, and performance. For many years she was a dedicated professional player of Baroque, Renaissance, and modern flute. Her classes at UCSC range from general education courses in music appreciation (which she confided are still her favorite courses to teach), to advanced seminars in the compositions of Lou Harrison and Renaissance performance practice. In her narration Miller also reflects on the unique aspects of UC Santa Cruz she has experienced over the past four decades: the Narrative Evaluation System, the boards of studies, the college system, the focus on undergraduate education, and the emphasis on interdisciplinary studies. She discusses the design of UCSC’s state-of-the-art Music Building, which opened in 1997. She also explores the evolution of UCSC’s Music Department, including the unique backgrounds and strengths of many of her colleagues, the birth of the MA, PhD, and DMA in music at UCSC, and the development of the UCSC Orchestra, the UCSC Opera Program, and various student ensembles. Miller found a true home in the UC Santa Cruz Music Department, which is dedicated to what Miller called “this balance between the practical and theoretical.” Miller’s scholarly interests are also diverse, ranging from Renaissance French chansons and madrigals; to music and politics in San Francisco from 1906 until World War II; to the Jewish American composer Aaron Jay Kernis. But she is perhaps best known for her scholarship on world-renowned composer Lou Harrison, who resided in the mountains near Santa Cruz from 1953 until his death in 2003. An extensive portion of this oral history is devoted to a discussion of Miller’s deep connection with Lou Harrison. This part of the oral history illuminates Miller’s writings on this extraordinary composer, whose archive is also housed at the UCSC Library’s Special Collections Department
Exploring Emptiness: An Investigation of MA and MU in My Sonic Composition Practice
The commentary investigates Japanese aesthetics of space, silence and emptiness - ma and mu - that informed my compositional practice during the research period 2012 - 2015. The portfolio comprises text compositions and sound installations in which forms of micro events and sustained events are employed. Throughout, the emphasis is on my personal engagement with, and manifestation of emptiness that concerns a particular model of listening and perception.
Chapter 1 discusses six primary research areas: ma and mu, material, text, form, listening and perception. Firstly, I introduce ma and mu by examining noh culture and Zeami's teaching of senu hima (where there is no-action) in the context of my personal approaches to music. The following subjects are then used to contextualise my PhD practice by means of examples from various composers and visual artists. Here, these particular and enigmatic concepts are explored through Japanese art as well as Western contemporary works by Alvin Lucier, Eliane Radigue and those of the Wandelweiser collective.
Part 2 provides contextual commentaries on selected compositions from the portfolio that mostly articulate my aesthetics in relation to the topics covered in Chapter 1. koso koso addresses my methodologies to investigate the essence of senu hima, followed by treow that discusses my approach to materials and the importance of space. I move on to grade two and grade two extended in order to examine text scores, and then, look into Espèces d'espaces 03 and 04 as examples of musical forms that I employ.
Finally, listening and perception are investigated through the compositions gnome and con.de.structuring. Throughout, I describe how my works explore emptiness as a result of my particular emphasis on listening over composing
