DXR: towards a billion routing lookups per second in software
Can a software routing implementation compete in a field generally reserved for specialized lookup hardware? This paper presents DXR, an IPv4 lookup scheme based on transforming large routing tables into compact lookup structures which easily fit into cache hierarchies of modern CPUs. DXR supports various memory/speed tradeoffs and scales almost linearly with the number of CPU cores. The smallest configuration, D16R, distills a real-world BGP snapshot with 417,000 IPv4 prefixes and 213 distinct next hops into a structure consuming only 782 Kbytes, less than 2 bytes per prefix, and achieves 490 million lookups per second (MLps) in synthetic tests using uniformly random IPv4 keys on a commodity 8-core CPU. Some other DXR configurations exceed 700~MLps at the cost of increased memory footprint. DXR significantly outperforms a software implementation of DIR-24-8-BASIC, has better scalability, and requires less DRAM bandwidth. Our prototype works inside the FreeBSD kernel, which permits DXR to be used with standard APIs and routing daemons such as Quagga and XORP, and to be validated by comparing lookup results against the BSD radix tree
The BSD Socket API for Simulator
BSD Socket API for Simulator is a project to run untouched Real World Application (RWA) binaries on the powerful modern general-purpose network simulators.
BSD Socket API for Simulator is designed to eliminate most of the drawbacks of previous works. It is simulator independence, so it can make use of the powerful functionality and versatile tools provided by modern general-purpose simulators such as NS-2. It is fully compatible with BSD Socket API, so RWA can be run on it without re-linking and re-compiling. It is transparent to the RWA, so RWAs are run on BSD Socket API for Simulator as they are on normal operating systems.
BSD Socket API for Simulator is built on the concept of message redirecting. It has two critical parts: shared library and customized simulator application. The shared library is loaded into the address space of RWA. On one hand, messages sent by RWA are captured by the shared library and redirected to the customized simulator application. On the other hand, messages from simulator are redirected by the customized simulator application to the shared library.
BSD Socket API for Simulator has been intensively tested. The test results show that it functions as expected and it has an acceptable performance

Enhancing Mitigation of Volumetric DDoS Attacks: A Hybrid FPGA/Software Filtering Datapath
The increasing network speeds of today’s Internet require high-performance, high-throughput network devices. However, the lack of affordable, flexible, and readily available devices poses a challenge for packet classification and filtering. This problem is exacerbated by the increase in volumetric Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks, which require efficient packet processing and filtering. To meet the demands of high-speed networks and configurable network processing devices, this paper investigates a hybrid hardware/software packet filter prototype that combines reconfigurable FPGA technology and high-speed software filtering on commodity hardware. It uses a novel approach that offloads filtering rules to the hardware and employs a Longest Prefix Matching (LPM) algorithm and allowlists/blocklists based on millions of IP prefixes. The hybrid filter demonstrates improvements over software-only filtering, achieving performance gains of nearly 30%, depending on the rulesets, offloading methods, and traffic types. The significance of this research lies in developing a cost-effective alternative to more-expensive or less-effective filters, providing high-speed DDoS packet filtering for IPv4 traffic, as it still dominates over IPv6. Deploying these filters on commodity hardware at the edge of the network can mitigate the impact of DDoS attacks on protected networks, enhancing the security of all devices on the network, including Internet of Things (IoT) devices
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
