У раду је дат приказ књиге Наука и истина аутора Милана Брдара.A significant part of the book Science and Truth by Milan Brdar is dedicated to the problems of the philosophy of social sciences, while the general philosophical approach is adapted to the transformational flows of contemporary philosophy. The author brings into heuristic relationships various philosophical traditions, with a critical tone of the Anglo-Saxon tradition of philosophy of science. Namely, the author critically examines the basic directionsin the philosophy of science, but not in terms of their validity and justification, but our understanding of the same is re-examined. The question is whether we have properly studied basic philosophical traditions and criticize “conventional” methodological approaches. Significant attention is focused on epochal changes in the philosophy of science and the need for new frameworks of the epistemological debate, away from the veil of abstraction and metaphysics, and approximated to the socio-historical circumstances of the emergence of knowledge. Instead of challenging traditional trends in philosophy, it is necessary to see what they can provide today in an era of contemporary philosophy

A few remarks on some issues and problems of self-determination and foundation in the works of Milan Brdar

This paper critically discusses the achievements of the most important representatives of the history of philosophy, sociology, political science in the interpretation of the fundamental philosophical issues and social phenomena of modern times. In the philosophical works which begin with the debate with Popper through the most recent papers in which the research in the modern and postmodern European philosophy is intensified, Milan Brdar critically reconsiders the main ideas of Descartes’ and Hegel’s philosophy trying to address the modern idea of reason as self-conscious self-relation in the spirit of analytic Cartesian method and radical philosophical self-reflection. This form of critical theoretical reconsideration implies that, if we want to be autonomous and free subjects not only of our individual but also of our collective way of life and history, we have to relate to ourselves as well as to others critically and to be conscious of that relation. This paper points out that the author starts from the crucial idea of the modern European philosophy that philosophy does not address, only the matter itself, but also one’s self-reflection. In his opinion the permanent self-reflection of philosophy represents the crucial condition which philosophy has to fulfill in order to become the reliable instrument of understanding of the society

Can philosophy do away with transcendence? A dialogue with Milan Brdar

The paper examines the interpretation of three major philosophical figures – Descartes, Kant and Heidegger – proposed in the latest monographs by Milan Brdar. I argue that these valuable books can be best understood as parts of his unique program of criticism of the Enlightenment. In particular, they converge in trying to establish a single point – the one of futility of all attempts to found philosophy which dispenses with the transcendence of God. Brdar highlights the limits of the Cartesian Cogito, which is unable to prove anything more than the existence of the self as a thinking being, as well as the necessity of a transcendent God as a warrant for our clear and distinct perceptions. On the other hand, Kant is the very type of philosopher of whom Brdar approves – the one who managed to combine knowledge and faith. As far as Heidegger is concerned, Brdar’s survey of his philosophical evolution, especially of his conception of Being as transcendence and his late turn towards a „new religion“, is an additional argument for Brdar’s thesis. However, I argue that Hegelian philosophy represents a challenge for Brdar’s intent. On this point I depart from the conclusions on Hegel expounded in the two chapters of his monograph on Kant. In particular, I disagree with his view of Hegel, substantiated by some assertions from his writings, as a philosopher whose panlogism verges on theocentrism. In the final part of the paper I propose instead of several elements of a radically secular reading of Hegel’s logic, phenomenology and philosophy of religion. I also argue that Hegel’s philosophy sharply diverges from the foundationalist pattern of the Cartesian type

Social constructivism and positive epistemology: On establishing of scientific facts

In this article author is dealing with the problem of genesis and establishing of scientific fact. In the first part is given philosophical treatment of the problem and its futility, for the reason given in Minhausen trilema as a conclusion of this kind of treatment. Second part of the article contains the review of Ludvik Fleck's positive epistemology and of social constructivism. After the short historical review of the roots of social constructivism in the Mannheim's sociology of knowledge, author describes how it goes with erstablishing of scientific fact. Solution is set forth by elaboration of triad physis-nomos-logos within the constitutive elements of society known as authority-institution-reason-discourse. Author's concluding thesis claims that there is no fact without convention, i.e. that nature and scientific fact are connected by institution (scientific or social). It does not mean that there is no sound established facts but that obstacle toward it is provided just with institutional mediation that make condition of possibility of very truth. Therefore, the question: what among known facts are really truthful amounts to eternal problem of science and common sense in every epoch of history.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Authority and astronomy: On the historical frame of the rise of modern science

Topic of the article is relation of the rise of modern science and religion in Western Europe in XVI-XVII Century. Author gives try to contribute to polemics unfolded around Robert Merton's study Science, Religion and Society in XVIIth Century England (1938), with two new thesis demonstrated on the basis of historical material. First, immediate significance of religion is not the main issue but relation and polemics among the Churches in the period of late Reformation, i.e., at the end of XVI Century. Here profound significance belongs to the sceptical polemics between chatolics (jesuits) and protestants (Hugenots) in France during the second half of the Century. For no side could afford the answer to the question of truth meaning of Holly Writt, polemisc have deepen the crisis of Christian theology in general. Thus, space is being open to the new born science of Copernicus, Kepler and Galileo as a new alternative. In keeping with that new expectation was born that mathematized science could by investigation of nature as work of God, with established natural laws provide the basis for reunion of Christianity and for moral reconstruction of Christian Commonwelth. This was a leading utopia of Newton-Leibnitz generation of XVII Century rationalists. According the second thesis, for institutionalization of science with Royal Society in London (1662) experience of toleration afforded through the civil war is more important than puritan religion. Furthermore, English puritanism, at the time of its forming in the middle o XVI Century was vividly totalitarian. But, one century latter, when Ryal Society was taking place, puritanism demonstrated well transformed character on the basis of libertarian attitude or on the path of via media. In that fashion it was really suitable as a factor in rise and establishing of modern science in England. Due to this trait, although majority of first member-team Royal Society have had open door for scientists of catholic faith. Therefore, author dos not attack Merton's thesis, by only gives short critique of it for missing of that historical genesis of puritanism

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

From normative towards positive epistemology: Problem of scientific fact

    No full text
In this article author provides a sketch of a twist from normative towards descriptive epistemology as a result of transformation of contemporary philosophy during the main occurrence known as Linguistic Turn. Best illustrations for epistemic twist are given in theories of Karl Popper, Ludwik Fleck and Thomas Kuhn. These three theories determined deconstruction of traditional philosophy of science and traditional picture of science and its practice. At the same time U isti mah, by the same twist towards descriptive and historical epistemology some core problems of epistemology and methodology are actualized in very sharper form. This concerns mainly of the problems of scientific statements and procedures of establishing of their objectivity and truthfulness. For in all three theories, of Popper, Fleck and Kuhn, empirical statements are functions/dependent of: theoretical framework, of though style or of paradigm, problem of truthfulness ad objective justification shows itself within Minhausen trilema. Task of positive epistemology is not to prescribe some procedure, but to provide reconstruction of real procedures given in practice of scientific communities. That means to show how they resolve problem of epistemic foundation of their theories and how they provide justified reasons to defend their theories as truthful and objective.
