    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Communication and Control Co-Design with Data-Driven Safety Guarantees for Networked Robots

    Cellular communication networks, originally designed for mobile phones, are increasingly being used by autonomous robots that require reliable connectivity to perform complex tasks. Advancements in artificial intelligence are enabling new applications for unmanned aerial vehicles, connected autonomous vehicles, and industrial mobile robots. However, many robots lack the onboard computational resources to run advanced algorithms and must offload processing to edge servers via the communication network. This introduces new challenges, as transmitting large volumes of sensor data can lead to network congestion, especially in multi-robot deployments. To address this, communication-control co-design has emerged as a critical research direction, enabling robots to adapt their behaviors to network conditions and maintain safe, efficient operation with limited resources. The overall objective of this thesis is to propose a new co-design framework for connected mobile robots. Specifically, we investigate how to adaptively trade off communication and control performance while guaranteeing safe navigation usingsensor-based localization. This is important for industrial mobile robots operating in indoor environments such as factories and warehouses, where satellite-based positioning is not an option, but could also be relevant for robots operating in environments with limited or no satellite visibility, such as mines, dense forests, and urban environments. This thesis consists of two main contributions. First, we design a motion controller for a mobile robot to achieve safe navigation among obstacles only detectable by external sensors. Since the robot cannot detect these obstacles with its own sensors, it must avoid them based on its estimated position and a known obstacle map. To account for imperfections in the estimated position, we incorporate a safety filter based on a robust Control Barrier Function that is designed to prevent collisions for a worst-case error in localization. This error is obtained by measuring the error between the estimated and the true position using experimental data. We then demonstrate that the proposed method ensures safe navigation in experiments with a Mobile YuMi Research Platform, a real mobile robot. Second, we propose a co-design framework for connected robots that must transmit sensor data over the network to receive updated position estimates from a localization algorithm offloaded to the edge. Since the robot’s motion also influences the accuracy of the localization, we co-design the communication and control strategy to achieve a desired level of localization uncertainty. By deriving this uncertainty requirement from a safety constraint based on the robot’s distance to mapped obstacles, we can verify that the robot navigates safely. The approach is validated in experiments with a real robot, demonstrating that a trade-off between communication and speed can be achieved without compromising safety.Mobila nätverk, som ursprungligen utvecklades för mobiltelefoner, används i allt större utsträckning av autonoma robotar som kräver tillförlitlig uppkoppling föratt kunna utföra komplexa uppgifter. Ett allt viktigare forskningsområde är därmed samdesign av kommunikation och styrning för mobila robotar. Samdesign kan användes till att anpassa en robots beteende efter nätverkets förutsättningar för att bibehålla säker och effektiv drift med begränsade resurser. Det övergripande målet med denna avhandling är att föreslå ett nytt ramverk för samdesign för uppkopplade robotar. Specifikt vill vi hitta en avvägning mellankommunikations- och styrprestanda samtidigt som vi garanterar säker navigation med sensorbaserad positionering. Detta är särskilt viktigt för industriella mobila robotar i till exempel lager och fabriker, där satellitbaserad positionering inte är ett alternativ. Det är även relevant för mobila robotar i andra miljöer där satellitsignaler kan blockeras, såsom gruvor, täta skogar och bland höghus i städer. Avhandlingen består av två huvudsakliga bidrag. I det första bidraget designar vi styrningen av en mobil robot för att möjliggöra säker navigering bland hinder som endast kan upptäckas av externa sensorer. Eftersom roboten inte kan upptäcka dessa hinder med sina egna sensorer, måste den undvika dem baserat på sin uppskattade position i en karta av kända hinder. För att ta hänsyn till osäkerheter i positioneringen inför vi ett säkerhetsfilter baserat på en robust Control Barrier Function. Filtret designas för att undvika kollisioner givet en övre gräns för lokaliseringsfelet. Vi utför hårdvaruexperiment med en Mobile YuMi Research Platform för att bestämma den övre gränsen på lokaliseringsfelet, samt för att demonstrera hur den föreslagna metoden undviker kollisioner. Därefter, i det andra bidraget, presenterar vi ett ramverk med samdesign för uppkopplade robotar som behöver överföra sensordata över nätverket för att få uppdaterad position från en lokaliseringsalgoritm som avlastats till en edge-server. Eftersom robotens rörelse också påverkar lokaliseringsnoggrannheten samdesignar vi kommunikation och styrning för att uppnå en önskad nivå av lokaliseringsosäkerhet. Genom att härleda ett osäkerhetskrav från ett säkerhetsvillkor baserat på robotens avstånd till kartlagda hinder kan vi verifiera att roboten navigerar säkert. Metoden valideras i hårdvaruexperiment som visar att en avvägning mellan kommunikationoch hastighet kan uppnås utan att kompromissa med säkerheten.QC 20250505</p
