Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Statistique d'occurrence planétaire autour des naines M et caractérisation fine de l'effet de leur activité stellaire sur la détection par vitesse radiale de planètes telluriques en zone habitable
Exoplanetology has become an essential field of astrophysics research for 25 years, and the heterogenous set of 4000 exoplanet detections keeps increasing. In addition of the gain brought by individual detection, statistical studies bring also some new constraints on planetary formation scenario. As they represent more than 80% of the stellar population of the solar neighborhood, M-dwarfs are privileged targets for these statistical studies. Furthermore, indirect methods of detection are more efficient for small mass planets as the mass of the star decreases. This is the reason why there are many projects dedicated to the detection of telluric planets in the habitable zone of M-dwarfs, leading to a huge volume of data. These huge samples allow us to have a complete view of planetary populations but they need statistical studies based on efficient systematic methods.During my PhD, I have worked on 400 M-dwarfs observed for 18 years (2003-today) by HARPS. I made an automatic analysis on more than 15000 spectra, from the extraction of the radial velocities to the construction of the planetary occurrence statistic. With this work, I found 80% of the planets already published on the HARPS sample and five new massive companions and a planetary candidate. I built a new planetary occurrence statistic around M-dwarfs detected by the radial velocity method. The occurrence rate of the smallest planets (Mp 10 Mt) is 7.8% (+2.4-1.5). These results are compatible with the transit occurrence rates obtained for short periods (Kepler survey), and with those obtained with the radial velocity survey in visible of CARMENES. Working on these time-series of radial velocities allowed us to understand the impact of the magnetic stellar activity in the radial velocity measurements. Some signals are the consequence of the presence of inhomogeneities on the surface of stars moving and inducing velocity variations at the rotation period of the star. These signals are intrinsic and sometimes on the same order of the signals of Keplerian reflex motion of the star. Today, signals of stellar activity are the main limitation in radial velocity detection of terrestrial exoplanets in the habitable zone.We decided to use the systematic methods built in the first part of this work on chromospheric proxies time-series at the end of my PhD. We found long term variability in chromospheric time-series of M-dwarfs of different mass, activity level, temperature, and spectral class. We built a long term analysis and identified 27 cycles of activity over the 179 M-dwarfs selected, 14 already published and 13 new cycles. We are currently working on the short term analysis and on the correlation between variations of chromospheric index.En 25 ans l’exoplanétologie est devenue un domaine de recherche essentiel en astrophysique et l’ensemble hétérogène des 4000 planètes détectées à ce jour ne cesse de s’accroître. Outre le gain d’information apporté par chaque nouvelle détection, la statistique de l’ensemble de ces objets apporte des contraintes capitales aux scenarii de formation planétaire. Pour ces études statistiques les naines M sont des cibles privilégiées car elles représentent près de 80% de la population stellaire de la Galaxie et aussi du voisinage solaire. Qui plus est, leur faible masse rend les méthodes de détection indirecte d’autant plus performantes pour les planètes de type Terre. Il existe donc aujourd’hui de nombreux projets spécifiques aux naines M, produisant un volume de données très conséquent. Ces grands échantillons permettent une vue la plus complète possible des populations planétaires nécessaire et essentielle. Leur étude statistique exige la construction de méthodes d’analyses systématiques efficaces.Durant mon doctorat, j’ai travaillé sur les 427 naines M observées avec l’instrument HARPS sur ces 18 dernières années (2003-aujourd’hui). J’ai mis au point l’analyse automatique de plus de 15000 spectres, de la mesure de la vitesse radiale à la construction d’un nouvel échantillon d’étude de 199 naines M. L’analyse de leurs séries de vitesse radiale a permis de retrouver plus de 80% des détections publiées sur cet échantillon, mais aussi de proposer de nouveaux candidats planétaires.Cet échantillon de 199 naines M permet une nouvelle statistique d’occurrence des planètes autour des naines M détectées par la méthode des vitesses radiales, qui améliore considérablement les précédentes déterminations. Mes résultats montrent une forte prévalence des planètes de petite masse à courtes périodes autour des naines M. Les taux d’occurrence des planètes de moins de 10 M pour des périodes inférieures à 100 jours atteint les 169% (+2.7-3.5) et seulement 7.8% (+2.4-1.5) pour les planètes de plus de 10 M pour des périodes similaires. Ces résultats sont compatibles avec ceux obtenus par les grands relevés de recherche de planètes en transit (missions Kepler) pour les très courtes périodes, et ont une bien meilleure sensibilité pour les périodes de plus de 10 jours, domaine où les planètes transitant sont rares. Lors de cette analyse, j’ai également pu étudier des conséquences de l’activité stellaire magnétique sur les mesures de la vitesse radiale. Ces signaux sont provoqués par la présence d’inhomogénéités de surface changeant de vitesse via la rotation stellaire. Ils sont donc intrinsèques à l’étoile et de même ordre de grandeur que le mouvement réflexe de l’étoile provoqué par la présence d’une planète (mouvement Képlerien) et constituent la principale limite à la détection d’exoplanètes de faible masse. Nous avons donc décidé d’utiliser la méthode d’analyse élaboréedurant mon doctorat sur des marqueurs propres à l’activité stellaire afin d’implémenter une étude exhaustive des conséquences de l’activité stellaire sur les suivis de mesure de vitesse radiale. Nous avons finalement pu détecter des variations à long et court terme dans plus de deux tiers des 179 naines M de notre étude, à toutes les gammes de masse, de tous les types spectraux et même à tous les niveaux d’activité. Nous avons validé 27 cycles d’activité, dont 13 nouveaux, puis nous avonscommencé une étude des effets à plus court terme de l’activité ainsi qu’une étude de la corrélation entre indices chromosphériques
