Political alienation and government-society relations in Post-Communist countries
On the basis of 1996 and 2006 International Social Survey Program (ISSP) data this paper explores the character of government-society relations in post-communist countries, and its dynamics. The use of comparative data and the application of Paige’s (1971) political alienation model and Woolcock’s and Narayan’s (2000) model of government-society relations allows to shed new light on citizen’s political attitudes by analysing them in the context of the overall political environment in the country. The results reveal that while citizens in most established democracies bear allegiant attitudes, citizens of post-communist countries feel alienated. Distrust of each other and of the political authorities leads to dysfunctional government-society relations. Since the time of transitional reforms people in post-communist countries have become more confident in their political capability, yet there is no general trend with regards to confidence in political authorities. Those at the margins of society often feel alienated, and dissident attitudes are on the rise, especially among youth
Emigrant Communities of Latvia: Diaspora of Hope
The study challenges the accustomed views of the migration process, calling for the revision of our understanding of what it means to 'emigrate', dispelling several myths and providing answers to many questions important in the context of the diaspora policy. It invites a change in the policy focus from getting emigrants to return home (a very difficult task considering the wage differences) to the possibilities of potential co-operation between those living in Latvia and abroad.
At the same time, the study warns of the commodification of emigrants if their economic contribution to Latvia is emphasized too much. One should not forget that any Latvian national is a part of our nation, regardless of age, ethnicity, education or demographic pro le. It is crucial to change the established view that the Latvian government does not need and does not care about people living abroad, and to help them to preserve ties with Latvia and their national identity, thus making it easier for emigrants and their children to return and integrate into the Latvian society, if they decide to do so.
– The first part of the monography characterizes the problem of emigration in Latvia and discusses methodological solutions to the study of emigrants.
– The second part is dedicated to the analysis of employment and education of Latvian migrants abroad.
– The third deals with the analysis of the sense of belonging, identity and attitudes of migrants.
– The final part turns to the analysis of the return migration and diaspora policy and praxis in Latvia, providing an insight into the opinions of experts responsible for the development and implementation of those policies.

Life insurance in the context of post-communist anomia
Autors secina, ka no trim anomijas dimensijām tikai bezspēcības rādītāji daļēji negatīvi korelē ar dzīvības apdrošināšanas tirgus īpatsvaru no IKP Eiropā. Atslēgvārdi: anomija, postkomunisma anomija, dzīvības apdrošināšana, postkomunismsThe title of thesis is “Life insurance in the context of post-communist anomia”. The thesis attempts to synthesize the theories of life insurance and post-communist anomia and then verify them empirically. Theoretical basis are theories of post-communist anomie, phenomenological sociology and the economic aspects of life insurance. Author proposes 3 dimensions of post-communist anomia that might explain European life insurance market penetration – lack of trust, difficulty setting long term goals and powerlessness. Empirical part is based on dividing European countries into 3 groups with relation to communism in 20th century. (former USSR member states, former USSR satellite states and former countries of Western bloc), then quantitative correlational analysis is applied to secondary data in order to establish relations between dimensions of post-communist anomia and grouped state variable. Author concludes that from three post-communist anomia dimensions only powerlessness partly correlates with life insurance market penetration. Keywords: anomia, post-communist anomia, life insurance, post-communis
Buying goods on credit as problem of self-control
Nowadays the enourmos amount of consumer credits were given out all around the World. The consumer credit is the most claimed type of credit in Latvia, which gives possibility to get commodity today and pay for it later. What is a reason why people do not accumulate money, but prefer consumer credits? An answer of this question is a lack of self-control. To find out is this statement reasonable or not, an author has done a research „Buying goods on credit as problem of self-control”. Research results specify, that people usually use consumer credits because they cannot control their consumption – spend more than earn, do spontaneous purchases and commodities that was taken in a credit are not needed. Also in this work was noticed, that younger man are more positively is their attitude towards consumer credit
Growing Up to Belong Transnationally: Parent Perceptions on Identity Formation Among Latvian Emigrant Children in England
This open access volume examines experiences of contemporary Latvian migrants, thereby focusing on reasons for emigration, processes of integration in their host countries, and – in the case of return migration - re-integration in their home country. In the context of European migration, the book describes the case of Latvia, which is interesting due to the multiple waves of excessive emigration, continuously high migration potential among European Union member states, and diverse migrant characteristics. It provides a fascinating insight into the social and psychological aspects linked to migration in a comparative context. The data in this volume is rich in providing individual level perspectives of contemporary Latvian migrants by addressing issues such as emigrants’ economic, social and cultural inclusion in the host country, ties with the home country and culture, interaction with public authorities both in the host and home country, political views, and perspectives on the permanent settlement in migration or return. Through topics such as assimilation of children, relationships between emigrants representing different emigration waves, the complex identities and attachments of minority emigrants, and the role of culture and media in identity formation and presentation, this book addresses topics that any contemporary emigrant community is faced with.; Provides insight in patterns of Latvian migration during the past 25 years An interdisciplinary enriched account on push and pull forces in contemporary diaspora transformations Discusses migration combining top-down policy and bottom-up emigrant perspective
Daily activities of Russian amateur out collectives after the start of the Ukrainian war
Darbs sastāv no 6 nodaļām. The topic of the bachelor's thesis is "Daily activity of Russian amateur art collectives after the start of the Ukrainian war". Its purpose is to clarify the daily activities of Russian amateur art collectives after the start of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The work consists of 6 chapters. The first chapter examines the activity of minority amateur art collectives in Latvia. The second chapter describes the context of the study. The third chapter analyzes the preservation of ethnicity and culture. The fourth chapter examines the theoretical framework used in the work - the concept of banal integration and Pierre Bourdieu's theory of cultural capital. The fifth chapter contains the description of the research methodology, the sixth chapter contains the analysis of research data, results and discussion. A mixed methods research was implemented in the bachelor thesis. Qualitative methods - semi-structured interviews - were used as the primary method, while quantitative methods - an online survey were used as the supporting method. In general, the study concluded that changes in the activities of Russian amateur art collectives after the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine differed in the collectives - for some it was a choice of repertoire, for others it was a decrease in concerts or the behavior of the collective itself, or there were no changes in the collective at all. On the other hand, judging by the obtained survey data, the respondents' opinion about minority collectives in Latvia is neutral, which, according to the author, can be evaluated positively. 3 research questions and 4 hypotheses were put forward, of which the first hypothesis was confirmed, the second was partially confirmed
