    Sheep Wool Waste Availability for Potential Sustainable Re-Use and Valorization: A GIS-Based Model

    Worldwide, 1.3 to 2.1 billion tons of agricultural waste are generated yearly, including livestock wastes (i.e., sheep wool), which create several critical environmental issues if not properly treated. In order to reduce the environmental issues related to the management and disposal, their use as natural fibers for green building components has notably developed over the last years. Indeed, sheep wool, which is a natural animal fiber that comes from shearing sheep fleece, is considered to be a problem of increasing concern due to its complex and difficult disposal management. Recently, several researchers have demonstrated that “low-quality wool” (i.e., not appropriate for textile uses) is suitable for the thermal and acoustic insulation of buildings. Indeed, thanks to its thermo-hygrometric and acoustic characteristics, it can be used as a reinforcing fiber for composite materials. In this study, a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based model to locate and quantify both the yearly amount of livestock waste, i.e., sheep wool, and the territorial distribution of sheep farms through their Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates, was developed and applied within the selected study area (i.e., the Sicily region). The aim was to identify the territorial areas highly characterized by this kind of waste and therefore most suitable for localizing new shared sheep wool collection centers to sustainably manage the reuse of this waste as a potential green building component

    Worldwide, around 998 million tons of agricultural waste are generated yearly, including livestock wastes, which create several critical environmental issues if not properly treated. In this study, a Geographical Information System (GIS)-based model to locate and quantify both the yearly amount of livestock waste, i.e., sheep wool, and the territorial distribution of sheep farms, was carried out and applied within the selected study area. The aim was to identify those territorial areas most suitable for localizing new shared wool collection centers to sustainably manage the reuse of this waste as potential green building material. Data related to both sheep farms and sheep number and the related sheep shared wool (SSW) yearly production were acquired and applied in GIS. By GIS-based model results, two collection centers have been identified within the provinces of Agrigento and Enna. Then, to develop a sustainable reuse in terms of reducing environmental impact due to the SSW logistics and supply phase, a possible third collection center was localized within the territorial area belonging to the province of Ragusa (south area of the Sicily). In this research, for the first time the issue above reported was addressed, by achieving results that contribute at developing an efficient collection chain for recovering and properly reusing SSW to respond adequately to a further industrial scale production

    Recycling of wasted wool fibers from sheep shearing for green building components: a review

    It is nowadays recognized that the building sector causes the greatest environmental impact in terms of both waste production and carbon emissions. Within the context of ecologically sustainable development (ESD), the construction sector is looking for more eco-friendly materials, such as natural fibres. Natural fibers are worldwide recognized as ideal replacement for traditional construction materials, providing excellent thermal and acoustic insulation for building but also for adoption as reinforcement fibers in cement mortars, composite materials, solid boards/panels, raw biomasses, multi-layers, filled loosen/foaming types, particles, slurry types, coils, bricks, etc. The aim of this work is to provide a clear overview on the natural fibers currently employed in the green production of building components, with the main focus on wool fibers deriving from the livestock sector, where wool waste disposal is a crucial problem. This article is a review conducted using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach, a globally recognized method that is not inherently innovative. The innovation of this article lies in the addressed topic, which is relatively new and has only recently gained significant attention, resulting in a limited number of highly relevant articles in the literature. A systematic literature review of the use of wool fibers for green building components is conducted herein to highlight the characteristics that make such material a usable resource in the construction sector and the limits of its use. Given the findings from the reviewed papers, the authors could document that most of the reviewed articles aimed at analyzing the mechanical, thermal, and acoustic properties of building components containing wool fibres. The review highlights that the strength of the wool fiber relies on its thermal properties which can be exploited for building thermal insulation. The wool fiber is also featured to provide good resistance to flexural loads; conversely, all the studies highlighted a negative effect of wool fibers on the compressive behavior of the investigated building components. The analysis of the acoustic properties showed that given the strong capacity of the wool fiber to absorb sound, wool is a great alternative to the conventional materials derived from non-renewable resources. Nevertheless, despite the eligibility of such fiber to be employed soon in the building sector, the analysis about the economic viability of the manufacturing process suggests that the high costs for the raw material, labor, electricity, and above all the high volume of water have to be drastically reduced by prompting the development of sheep wool fiber waterless processing. The achieved results could represent a first step in planning the sustainable re-use of wool waste as natural, renewable, and biodegradable fiber in the construction sector, providing the possibility of creating a new supply chain and solving the problem of its disposal

    Physical and Mechanical Characterization of a Low-Quality Sheep Wool Fiber

    Worldwide, building sector is the leading cause of environmental degradation, global warming, and climate change with the 50% of carbon emissions, 20–50% of consumption of energy and natural resources, and 50% of total solid wastes production. Several studies were carried out by investigating eco-friendly materials that could be involved and integrated into building process with the aim of replacing conventional building materials, e.g., concrete, steel, plastic components. Totally in accordance with the circular economy statements, sustainable materials could be obtained by the reconversion of wastes, e.g., solid wastes coming from urbanized area and agricultural wastes. This research stems from the need to exploit wastes coming from livestock processes, i.e., sheep wool fibers (SWF), and their potential reuse as reinforcement for rammed earth building components. To this aim, experimental trials were performed to get useful information on the mechanical properties of SWF in wet environments like those present in lime mixes. Then, compressive, and flexural tests have been performed on raw earth adobes by incorporating SWF. The obtained results encourage the use of sheep wool fiber as reinforcement for raw earth composite materials

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     LCA analysis for assessing environmenstal sustainability of new biobased chemicals by valorising citrus waste

    The global shift towards using biomass for biofuels and chemicals is accelerating due to increasing environmental concerns and geopolitical strategies. This study investigates a biorefinery model using citrus-processing-waste, specifically citrus pulp, to produce high-value products for various industries, including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, flavours, fragrances, and food packaging. In Italy, particularly Sicily region, citrus processing generates significant amounts of waste, often improperly disposed of, contributing to environmental problems. Researchers have demonstrated that citrus waste can yield commercially valuable compounds. This study specifically focuses on orange peel waste (OPW), which constitutes about half of the fruit's weight, aiming to extract pectin and limonene through a combined process. The extraction process was carried out on a laboratory scale, and its sustainability was evaluated using a life cycle assessment (LCA) with SimaPro 8.1 software and the Impact 2002 + method. The functional unit adopted for this study is 300 g of OPW, obtained after the pre-treatment phase, from which 0.14 g of limonene and 8.22 g of pectin were extracted. The LCA results revealed that pectin extraction has a significantly higher environmental impact compared to limonene extraction, primarily due to the use of ethanol as a solvent, followed by electricity consumption. To mitigate this impact, the LCA assessed alternative, more sustainable solvents, resulting in a 73.4% reduction in the environmental footprint of the pectin extraction process. These findings underscore the critical role of LCA, even at the laboratory scale, in identifying environmental hotspots and providing insights for improving and optimizing processes for potential industrial-scale applications

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
