    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Le gisement de Gakara au Burundi est l’un des plus riches gisements en Eléments de Terres Rares (ETR) au monde. La zone du rift est-africain est l’hôte bien connu de nombreuses carbonatites et complexes alcalins associés, mis en place de façon récurrente depuis plusieurs centaines de millions d’années. Les grands gisements d’ETR exploités aujourd’hui dans le monde sont associés à des complexes carbonatitiques. Dans ces complexes, les minéralisations font rarement partie de l’assemblage minéralogique primaire ; elles précipitent à partir des fluides évolués à partir des intrusions magmatiques. Afin de mieux comprendre les mécanismes de mise en place des minéralisations en ETR de la région de Gakara, nous avons employé une approche multidisciplinaire : i) Une étude géologique basée sur les observations de terrain et une étude de la composition minéralogique et des textures de différents faciès du minerai, à partir des outils d’observations microscopiques classiques. ii) Des techniques de datation U-Th-Pb in-situ par La-ICP-MS pour déterminer les âges de la minéralisation primaire (veines de bastnaésite, un fluoro-carbonate d’ETR) et de l’altération hydrothermale (altération en monazite, un phosphate d’ETR) y relative. iii) Une étude détaillée des inclusions fluides piégées dans les cristaux de bastnaésite et de quartz syngénétique de l’altération monazitique pour caractériser les fluides minéralisateurs et ainsi déterminer leur nature et leurs conditions physico-chimiques de mise en place. iv) Une étude des isotopes stables de carbone et d’oxygène sur bastnaésite et quartz pour donner une indication complémentaire sur l’origine des fluides minéralisateurs et les mécanismes mis en jeu. v) L’intégration des données géophysiques et géochimiques acquises par la société Rainbow lors de ses campagnes de prospection pour les confronter aux données de la géologie de terrain afin de mieux comprendre les mécanismes de formation du gisement de Gakara ainsi que discuter l’identification de zones minéralisées nouvelles. Toutes les données acquises dans ces différentes études et les principales observations permettent d’établir un modèle métallogénique global de Gakara comme résultant du dépôt des ETR en conditions hydrothermales dans la croûte supérieure, à partir de fluides exsolvés d’un magma vraisemblablement carbonatitique, fluides ayant ensuite subi une démixtion vapeur à CO2 – saumures aqueuses. Cette démixtion est vraisemblablement le principal mécanisme de précipitation des minéraux de terres rares. L’implication de fluides environnants, peu salés, possiblement issus de la surface, est suggérée. La minéralisation s’est mise en place en marge de l’événement tectonique panafricain, il y a 600 Ma environ et a été affectée par les déformations récentes, possiblement associées au développement du rift est-africain.The Gakara deposit in Burundi is one of the richest deposits of Rare Earth Elements (REE) in the world. The East African rift zone is the well-known host of many carbonatites and associated alkaline complexes, which have been in place for many hundred million years. The main deposits of REE mined today in the world are associated with carbonatite complexes. In these complexes, mineralization is rarely part of the primary mineral assemblage; they precipitate from fluids evolved from magmatic intrusions. To better understand the mechanisms of emplacement of REE mineralization in the Gakara area, we used a multidisciplinary approach: i) A geological study based on field observations and a study of the mineralogical composition and textures of different facies of the ore, using conventional microscopic observation tools. ii) In-situ U-Th-Pb dating by La-ICP-MS to determine the ages of primary mineralization (veins of bastnaesite, REE-fluorocarbonate) and hydrothermal alteration (monazitic alteration, REE-phosphate). iii) A detailed study of the fluid inclusions trapped in bastnaesite and quartz crystals associated with the monazitic alteration to characterize the mineralizing fluids and thus specify their nature and physicochemical conditions of emplacement. iv) A study of stable isotopes of carbon and oxygen on bastnaesite and quartz to give a complementary indication of the origin of the mineralizing fluids and the mechanisms involved. v) The integration of geophysical and geochemical data acquired by Rainbow Company during its prospecting campaigns to compare them with field geology data in order to better understand the formation mechanisms of the Gakara deposit as well as to discuss the identification of new mineralized zones. All the data acquired in these different studies and the main observations allow to establish a global metallogenic model of Gakara area. Mineralization is results from the deposition of REE in hydrothermal conditions in the upper crust, from exsolved fluids of a probably carbonatitic magma, fluids having subsequently undergone CO2 vapor – aqueous brine separation. This phase separation was probably the main precipitation mechanism of REE minerals. The implication of surrounding fluids, with very low salinity, possibly coming from the surface, is suggested. Mineralization took place during the pan-African tectonic event, at about 600 Ma, and was affected by recent deformations, possibly associated with the development of the East-African rift
