Reading the Dental Record investigates human foodways, health and disease, and certain (gender-related) craft activities in the pre-Columbian Caribbean archipelago, through integrated analyses of patterns of dental wear and pathology in a large number of skeletal remains from the region. Individuals, communities, and regional populations were physically affected by their foodways and cultural practices, leaving permanent traces on the teeth.

Skeletons in the closet: future avenues for the curation of archaeological human skeletal remains in the Dutch Caribbean and the rest of the region
Human skeletal remains from archaeological contexts in the Dutch Caribbean and the rest of the region are curated in a variety of facilities such as museums and the premises of heritage organizations, history and archaeology interest groups or in some cases private collections. These curating facilities deal with various challenges regarding the care for human remains, but in many cases a lack of sufficient resources affects the conservation of the human remains that have been under long-term curation. This chapter discusses some of the ways in which storage conditions and documentation of human skeletal remains in the region may cost-effectively be improved. Legislation and guidelines pertaining to the treatment of archaeological human remains in other parts of the world provide a potential framework for the development of conservation strategies for human skeletal remains under (long-term) curation in both the Dutch Caribbean, where legislation and guidelines for Dutch archaeology have recently been introduced, and the Caribbean region as a whole. While conservation of human remains is in the interest of all stakeholders, this chapter emphasizes the strengthening of ties between visiting researchers and curators in order to effectively make use of the available expertise and maintain conservation with very few resources. A model for the post-recovery treatment of archaeological human remains based on museum guidelines recently developed in Europe and shared responsibility between visiting researchers and curators is proposed.Archaeology of indigenous Americ
The Mass Grave Project:An interdisciplinary approach to the archaeology of mass graves
The shockingly frequent occurrence of mass graves resulting from conflict and mass violence comprises a significant humanitarian and social crisis. In addition to serving as tangible evidence of deep trauma, large-scale criminal acts and violation of human rights, mass graves pose complex and challenging archaeological contexts for investigation. The large numbers of deceased individuals and personal effects found within these graves require specialized forensic archaeological excavation techniques and meticulous documentation methods to safeguard evidence of crimes committed. However, mass graves as archaeological contexts are still poorly understood, with uncertainties surrounding the preservation of remains and the recovery of important evidence. These knowledge gaps affect the identification, documentation and recovery of victims found in mass graves. The Mass Grave Project is an interdisciplinary experiment simulating clandestine mass and single graves at the outdoor forensic research facility managed by the Forensic Anthropology Center, Texas State University. By enhancing scientific understanding of mass graves as complex and dynamic archaeological contexts, the project seeks to advance the field of forensic archaeology. Specifically, the project aims to advance methods of detection, 3D documentation, and excavation of mass graves, as well as the identification and time-since-death estimation of the deceased individuals within them. Furthermore, the project seeks to provide training opportunities for students and practitioners in excavation and recording techniques, both through fieldwork and the development of innovative 3D Virtual Reality training tools. Improving scientific understanding of mass graves ensures the preservation of vital evidence of historical events and tragedies. Besides immediate importance for criminal prosecution and humanitarian purposes, such evidence is essential to the development of memorialization practices at conflict sites. Furthermore, improved identification and time-since-death estimation contribute to peacebuilding and reconciliation efforts by providing accurate data on victims of conflict

The impact of freezing on the post-mortem human microbiome
Introduction: Human donations are often used in forensic research as they can provide unique insights into post-mortem research that cannot be obtained with animal proxies. This is especially true for forensic microbiome research, as human circumstances such as drug-use or health conditions may influence the post-mortem microbiome. However, it is not always feasible to conduct such research immediately after death. Donors are often stored frozen in human taphonomy facilities, pending the start of any experimental study, yet little is known about how freezing may affect their microbiome. Methods: We assessed the effects of freezing on the post-mortem human microbiome by analysing the microbial diversity and abundance of seven human donors at the Forensic Anthropology Center at Texas State (FACTS) before and after freezing. Swab samples were taken from five locations on each corpse upon arrival to FACTS and again after they had been frozen in storage for a period ranging between 11 and 40 days and subsequently thawed. Results: After performing the microbiome analysis of the swabs via 16S rRNA gene metabarcoding, we found changes in the abundance levels of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota and Firmicutes, as well as the presence of the new phyla Deinococcota and Myxococcota after freezing. However, none of these changes were significant when comparing community diversity before and after freezing. Discussion: Overall, our results show that the observed changes in the abundance of specific phyla before and after freezing are negligible, that freezing does not significantly alter the human microbiome and that frozen donors are suitable for forensic studies on the human thanatomicrobiome

This report is a discussion of the 1984 report 'An automatic proof procedure for several geometries' by Th. Bruyn and H.L. Claasen, inspired by a personal desire to understand the work of Th. Bruyn. See: http://resolver.tudelft.nl/uuid:b768c6ce-f625-4236-9b0b-32a47fab143e Bruyn and Claasen prove that certain true propositions of the theory of intersections within the two-dimensional projective geometry over the real numbers can be formulated by use of figures. It is proven that figures obtained by manipulating these figures will also correspond to propositions. The method to do so proves that the obtained propositions are a direct consequence of the original propositions and are therefore proven to be true. One of their main results is to use the theorem of Pappus to generate the theorem of Desargues, thereby proving that Desargues follows from Pappus (something that is well known in projective geometry). This report aims to give a comprehensive explanation of their method as well as a detailed demonstration of their procedure. It is a summary of their work with added explanations and examples
