Emerging Non-OECD Countries: Global Shifts in Power and Geopolitical Regionalization
Since 1990 the banning of ethnic and other identity-based parties has become the norm in sub-Saharan Africa. This article focuses on Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda as three East African countries that have opted for different ways of dealing with such parties. Using case studies, it traces the origins of the party bans in Tanzania and Uganda and explores the reasons for the absence of a ban in Kenya. The analysis shows that the laws on particularistic parties have actually been implemented by the appropriate institutions. However, these laws have only marginally influenced the character of the political parties in the three countries: A comparison of regional voting patterns suggests that bans on particularistic parties have not ensured the emergence of aggregative parties with a national following in Tanzania and Uganda. In Kenya on the other hand, where such a ban was nonexistent until 2008, parties have not proven to be more regional.Sub-Saharan Africa, party ban, ethnic parties, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, party regulation, party nationalization
„Maina i Kościej” (1843) Narcyzy Żmichowskiej w kontekście badań nad mitologią Słowian
The article offers a comprehensive analysis of a single work, the early poem Maina i Kościej [Maina and Koshchei] by Narcyza Żmichowska. So far, it has been subjected to various interpretations, viewing the text from either biographical, intertextual (in relation to French literature), feminist, and philosophical perspectives. All of these readings are recalled either directly in the text or in footnotes. Notably, in the course of her queries, the author has not come across a study juxtaposing various snippets of information on Slavic culture and mythology embedded in the poem with the latest findings in religious studies. The ‘Eastward’ turn of European (and further) public discourse has resulted in the tremendous popularity of research on the heritage of Slavic pagan culture, which is currently experiencing a revival — not unlike in the Romantic period, during which Żmichowska operated. In this author’s opinion, Maina i Kościej is a work that merits a reinterpretation from a previously unexplored angle. The article initially outlines the historical context in which the poem was penned, taking into account both Żmichowska’s historiosophical interest in Slavic Antiquity and the period of the November Uprising, as the poem by Żmichowska alludes to both. The study mentions the sources the author drew upon while composing Maina i Kościej, including Adam Naruszewicz’s study on Slavic deities. It then follows with an in-depth analysis of the poem, taking into account references to Slavic mythology, other Romantic-era works, the distinctive poetics of the period, as well as relevant philosophical and historical contexts. As a result, it offers a novel interpretation of a text that deserves to be counted among the unjustly forgotten poetic works of the Romantic era
THE PEDAGOGICAL READINESS OF INSTRUCTORS TOWARDS ACHIEVING INTEGRATION OF ICTS IN TVET INSTITUTIONS IN KENYA
This paper points to the necessity to conduct research on the pedagogical
readiness of instructors towards achieving integration of ICT’s in Technical and Vocational
Education and Training (TVET) institutions in Kenya.Research on the integration of ICTs in
teaching and learning in TVET institution in Kenya have been done to improve the learning
process, though very little progress has been recognized toward its effective
integration.TVET subsector have revealed that in spite of the many efforts that researchers
and educators put over the years in preparing teachers in the educational uses of ICTs,
teachers still lack the Pedagogical skills and knowledge needed to be able to teach with
ICT technology successfully. The aim of the study was to investigate the Effect of
Pedagogical readiness on Effective Integration of ICTs in TVET institution in Kenya with
specific reference to Michuki and Thika Technical Training Institute in Murang’a and
Kiambu County respectively. The relationship between Effective Integration and
Pedagogical readiness is significant, the correlation coefficient, R, is 0.863. Therefore,
Effectively Integrationis positively correlated with Pedagogical readiness and the
relationship is very strong.Teacher’s Technical education institutions need to develop
strategies and plans to enhance the teaching learning process within teacher education
programmes and to assure that all future teachers are well prepared to use the ICTs tools
for learning
The Ceramic Assemblage from Staraya Maina Hillfort Long House
The article is devoted to the analysis of pottery traditions of the population associated with the existence of “long houses” on Staraya-Maina hillfort (Ulyanovsk Oblast), dated by the Great Migration Period. The research is based on the ceramic collection found on the hillfort during the excavations in 1990–1991. This paper presents a typological description of vessels and the results of technological analysis conducted by the author according to A. A. Bobrinsky’s method. The analysis revealed two massive pottery traditions, one of which was widely known on Imenkovo culture settlements, while the second one was a new discovery. The author suggests that this group of ceramics might be associated with an inflow of population from the Middle Oka region and from the Oka-Sura region in the fifth century AD, which brought the typical complex of garnishments of Ryazan-Oka type to the Middle Volga region
Basic newborn resuscitation guidelines for healthcare providers in Maragua District Hospital: a best practice implementation project
Objective: The overall aim of this project was to assess compliance with evidence-based criteria regarding newborn resuscitation among healthcare workers in the maternity units in Maragua District Hospital (a busy district hospital in Kenya). Introduction: Globally, the majority of deaths under five years are attributable to neonatal causes. Perinatal asphyxia accounts for a significant portion of these deaths, especially in developing countries. These deaths are largely preventable, and interventions geared towards assisting newborns to initiate their first breath within the first minute of life have markedly reduced mortality. Methods: This implementation project was conducted in the maternity units of a busy district hospital. Evidence-based audit criteria were developed on the basis of an evidence summary developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). Using the JBI Practical Application of Clinical Evidence System software (JBI PACES), a baseline audit was conducted including a sample size of 55 healthcare providers and 300 patient case notes followed by an identification of potential barriers and strategies to overcome them. A follow-up audit including a sample size of 55 healthcare providers was conducted by using the same audit criteria. Results: Improvements in practice were demonstrated in all criteria. The baseline audit demonstrated that three of the five audit criteria were found to be less than 50%, indicating moderate compliance with current evidence with regards to newborn resuscitation. Following implementation of the strategies, which included a six-week education and demonstrative skills training, and updating of the protocols and equipment, there was a significant improvement in all the criteria audited, with the first four criteria achieving 100% compliance, and the fifth criteria achieving 90% compliance. Conclusion: On completion of the project, the participants demonstrated an increase in knowledge and skills on newborn resuscitation, which led to a significant reduction in admission of newborns with birth asphyxia to the newborn unit.Lilian Maureen Nyatichi Kebaya, Jason Kiruja, Michuki Maina, Salome Kimani, Christine Kerubo, Alexa McArthur, Zachary Munn, Philip Ayiek

Processes of transgression: inverting dichotomies \"from object to subject\" in Maina Mendes and Myra, by Maria Velho da Costa
Maria Velho da Costa, an author of steep writing, presented a legacy of transgression in contemporary Portuguese literature of female authorship. In this paper, we seek to analyze the works Maina Mendes (1969), her debut novel, and Myra (2008), her last published novel. We observe how the construction of the female discourse is guided within the works through language and the role of the discourse\'s interlocutors. Furthermore, we present the reading of these works as Bildungsroman, based mainly on the contributions of Cristiana Ferreira Pinto about the female Bildungsroman. In this sense, we use the concept of Bildungsroman to illustrate how the female Bildungsroman breaks with the traditional Bildungsroman, either through discourse or interrupted formation
Evaluating the effects of a health workforce intervention on indicators of quality of newborn care in Kenyan neonatal units
In Kenya and many resource-constrained low and middle-income countries (LMICs), there is a drive to make Level 2 neonatal unit services more accessible to the populace to reduce neonatal mortality. This has led national governments and development partners to equip such units with the necessary technology. However, inadequate investment in commensurate human resources for health in Kenya and other LMICs may limit any benefits of upgrading neonatal units. It is, therefore, timely to evaluate if improving nurse staffing numbers by a modest amount in contexts supported to provide Level 2 neonatal care results in improved quality of care. I used literature reviews and quantitative research methods to answer this question. Using cross-sectional data and a before and after design, I collect data on care provision in eight Level 2 neonatal units in Kenya and prospectively explore changes in nursing time and care provision following adding extra nurses in four of them.
I found that nurse staffing was extremely poor in the eight Level 2 neonatal units in Kenyan public hospitals. On average, using one measure of nurse input, nurses had 30 minutes per patient per 12-hour shift. As a result, they could only manage a third of all measured nursing tasks. A third of tasks were missed, and another third were informally delegated to nursing students and caregivers, including technical nursing care items, which raises possible patient safety concerns. The nurse staffing intervention resulted in a 4.2% change in measured bedside nurse-delivered care but no change in total measured neonatal care. This, in part, was linked to challenges in achieving full fidelity of the workforce intervention, which resulted from many nurses going on leave and nurse transfers out of the neonatal unit.
The findings suggest that for Kenya to meet the Sustainable Development Goal of reducing neonatal mortality to 12 per 1000 live births, more significant investments must be made in the nursing workforce and other human resources for health. Such investments must be holistic across the public health system, not just for neonatal services alone
