John H. Ruffin, Jr. Collection
This collection documents the work of the Honorable John H. Ruffin, Jr. as a civil rights attorney, judge, speaker, lecturer, and civic leader. Judge Ruffin was actively involved in numerous civil rights cases, notably the Acree vs. County Board of Education of Richmond County, Georgia, a lawsuit he filed to desegregate the schools in the county. Notably, Ruffin held the distinction of being the first African-American member of the Augusta Bar Association.

In this recording, James Costen interviews Dr. Abraham H. Prince, a leader in the senate of the south and Presbyterian minister. Born November 1900 in Sumter county South Carolina, he grew up with little education and his parents were cotton farmers. He tells the story of how he sought education, going on to graduate college and to earn a divinity degree. They discuss various churches that Prince worked for and the politics around some of the churches in the Presbytery. Additionally, he talks about professionalism in the field and the lack of qualified preachers entering the church.The Atlanta University Center Robert W.
