No full textThis paper discusses the requirements of current and emerging applications based on the Open Archives Initiative (OAI) and emphasizes the need for a common infrastructure to support them. Inspired by HTTP proxy, cache, gateway and web service concepts, a design for a scalable and reliable infrastructure that aims at satisfying these requirements is presented. Moreover it is shown how various applications can exploit the services included in the proposed infrastructure. The paper concludes by discussing the current status of several prototype implementations

Get PDFDissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e ExpressãoAsfalto Selvagem I e II - Engraçadinha seus amores e seus pecados foi escrito por Nelson Rodrigues, originalmente, sob a forma de folhetim, diariamente publicado no jornal Ultima Hora (1959-60), e seguindo o caminho de seus folhetins anteriores recebeu uma impressão posterior (1961) em forma de livro, "transformando-se" em romance. Em 1995, novamente, Asfalto Selvagem... migra para outro veículo da indústria cultural indo parar num seriado de televisão. Este trabalho propõe retraçar as pontes entre o folhetim como forma de literatura industrializada e a televisão como veículo da indústria cultural e como bem simbólico (na cultura brasileira), a fim de localizar Asfalto Selvagem: Engraçadinha seus amores e seus pecados em sua passagem do jornal à televisão em alguns aspectos implicados nesse processo. Em primeiro lugar, na obra de Nelson Rodrigues, Engraçadinha destaca-se em sua travessia social de gêneros e como romance-folhetim. Em segundo lugar, há uma re-montagem histórica da teledramaturgia como pano de fundo propiciador de uma exposição do folhetim de Nelson Rodrigues. Em terceiro lugar, a passagem, propriamente dita, do folhetim à imagem, se por um lado reforça o caráter conservador da TV, por outro, atualiza a transgressividade erótica presente no texto rodrigueano, já como uma adaptação ao século XX do folhetim do século XIX

No full text"This book is about Franklin D. Roosevelt's 1937 effort to pack the Supreme Court. Unlike most work on the subject, Michael Nelson's focus is more on the president's decisions than on the Court's responses. It analytically narrates what FDR was doing (or choosing not to do) in response to these developments as they occurred. While keeping Court-packing front and center, Nelson embeds the effort in FDR's larger campaign to direct American government and politics in pursuit of his desire to entrench the New Deal lastingly in several of the country's major political and governmental institutions: Congress, the Democratic Party, and the executive branch, as well as the Court. It was an understandable effort: the Republicans had dominated all three branches for varying but considerable lengths of time. In the end, the president's effort was unevenly successful"-
Losing my revolution: How many resources shared on social media have been lost?
Get PDFSocial media content has grown exponentially in the recent years and the role of social media has evolved from just narrating life events to actually shaping them. In this paper we explore how many resources shared in social media are still available on the live web or in public web archives. By analyzing six different event-centric datasets of resources shared in social media in the period from June 2009 to March 2012, we found about 11% lost and 20% archived after just a year and an average of 27% lost and 41% archived after two and a half years. Furthermore, we found a nearly linear relationship between time of sharing of the resource and the percentage lost, with a slightly less linear relationship between time of sharing and archiving coverage of the resource. From this model we conclude that after the first year of publishing, nearly 11% of shared resources will be lost and after that we will continue to lose 0.02% per day

Exploration of a biologically inspired model for sound source localization in 3D space
Get PDFSound localization in 3D space relies on a variety of auditory cues resulting from the encoding provided by the lower and higher regions of the auditory path. During the last 50 years different theories and models have been developed to describe psychoacoustic phenomena in sound localization inspired by the processing that is undertaken in the human auditory system. In this paper, a biologically inspired model of human sound localization is described and the encoding of the known auditory cues by the model is explored. In particular, the model takes as an input binaural and monaural stationary signals that carry information about the Interaural Time Difference (ITD), the Interaural Level Difference (ILD) and the spectral variation of the Head Related Transfer Function (HRTF). The model processes these cues through a series of linear and nonlinear units, that simulate the peripheral and the pre-processing stages of the auditory system. The encoded cues, which in the model are represented by excitation-inhibition (EI) and the time average (TA) activity patterns, are then decoded by a central processing unit to estimate the final location of the sound source
