Product Development and Market Expansion: a Real Options Model
No full textThis paper develops a model that values complementary and substitute projects, with potentially correlated revenues, that must be developed sequentially. The problem can be thought of as a sequential development of two simple projects with an option to exchange. The initial project has limited direct value because it is assumed that competition limits its direct cash flows. There is however an indirect benefit from the lead project in that its implementation is necessary before investment in a follow-on high value project can be undertaken. The follow-on project has significant value because there is a period of limited competition (ensured for instance by a patent).
Whether the products are partial substitutes or complements, we find that the value of the combined projects and the time value of the option to invest in the initial project are increasing functions of correlation, and the probability of investing in the initial product is a decreasing function. If the products are substitutes, correlation can have a negative impact on the value of the combined projects and the time value of the option to invest in the initial project. The effect of correlation increases when the value of the initial product is relatively more uncertain. Moreover, the lower the correlation between the products, the higher the likelihood that the optimal timing for investing in the follow-on product is separated from that of the initial product. Regardless of the level of correlation, a higher degree of substitutability increases the value of the combined projects but reduces the time value of the option to invest in the initial one, thus increasing the probability of investing. Finally, we show that despite greater uncertainty during the phase of limited competition, the firm is more likely to invest earlier

industry can be considered a male-dominated workplace within which women while working, experience gender discrimination. This article intends to answer the following research questions: (i) how women working in the music industry are perceived and ‘told’ in their professional context
and (ii) which representations, sedimented in the male gaze, continue to circulate in our culture.
The empirical study is based on a qualitative secondary analysis of 75 narratives by female music
workers focused on direct experiences. The results of this research confirm that the exclusion of
women is motivated by the shared idea that they have biological predispositions for other activities and/or personal or professional limits

No full textI disastri naturali sono eventi imprevedibili, extra-ordinari, che destabilizzano la struttura sociale generando disordine, perdite umane e distruzione. Questo li rende delle forme particolarmente forti di crisi comunitaria, capaci di mettere a nudo e a dura prova le funzioni di base del sistema sociale. La società contemporanea come reagisce e si riorganizza dopo un disastro? Che ruolo hanno le nuove tecnologie in un contesto emergenziale?
Il volume analizza - attraverso una serie di ricerche empiriche condotte a partire dal terremoto dell'Aquila del 6 aprile 2009 - i processi comunicativi innescatisi dopo l'evento catastrofico e dimostra come i contesti online si siano rivelati efficaci di fronte all'emergenza, sia essa reale o mediata dalla comunicazione, sia essa legata ad aspetti concreti o emotivi.
Il libro costituisce una prima riflessione sul ruolo dei media digitali, e soprattutto di Internet, in circostanze che esulano dalla quotidianità. I dieci saggi raccolti nel volume, pur prendendo spunto da prospettive differenti, sono accomunati dall'oggetto di ricerca - la Rete - e dal suo ruolo nell'ambito della tragedia aquilana, in riferimento soprattutto a due macro temi: le forme partecipative dal basso e la commemorazione collettiva come momento di costruzione di una memoria condivisa e di elaborazione del trauma.
L'obiettivo è quello di esplorare nuove pratiche partecipative, possibili modelli interpretativi e metodi di indagine per proporre una ridefinizione, di termini e strumenti, della Sociologia dei disastri al tempo dei social media

Attraverso 115 frammenti narrativi digitali di donne lavoratrici della musica, si ricostruiscono le forme della discriminazione di genere in questo particolare ambito, con riguardo alla rappresentazione socio-narrativa incarnata dello sguardo degli
uomini. Tale definizione intende sottolineare l’importanza della componente narrativa, accanto a quella puramente visiva, nella costruzione delle rappresentazioni che circolano in una data cultura. La ricerca evidenzia la presenza di una rappresentazione stereotipata delle donne all’interno dell’industria musicale e la forte dominanza di processi di oggettivazione e sessualizzazione, dove il corpo diviene il principale mediatore della relazione professionale

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
