    Interview with Cathy Ulrich

    No full text
This spring, the students in UND’s ENGL 414 workshop (The Art of Writing Fiction) read a collection of micro and flash fictions titled Ghosts of You, by Cathy Ulrich. With its use of second person and a penchant for turning tropes of crime fiction on their heads, this book is a must read. Three ENGL 414 students had the opportunity to interview the author via email to discuss Cathy Ulrich’s intentions in Ghosts of You, as well as her own personal writing techniques. To borrow from how each story in Ghosts of You begins, “The thing about being the [interviewer] is you set the plot in motion.” Floodwal

Teachers’ Perspectives on Incorporating Moodle in a Ninth-Grade Reading Classroom

    No full text
Effective technology use in the classroom can help stimulate a variety of learning styles and engage students through fun and exciting activities that help the students comprehend the content. Although research reported the benefits of technology in the classroom, there is a lack of knowledge of the effects of technology like Moodle on students’ academic scores, engagement, motivation, and overall achievement. As such, the problem addressed in this study was the lack of effective use of technology that affects students’ motivation, engagement, and achievements in the classroom. Using Vygotsky’s constructivism theory as the theoretical foundation and qualitative case study as the research method and design, this study aimed to analyze teachers’ perspectives about the impact of the Moodle software in a ninth-grade reading classroom as it is implemented in the student’s daily lesson plan and how it affects their learning. A convenience sample of 10 participants were interviewed, and the results showed that Moodle improved student learning engagement, allowing them a clear goal setting and enhanced student engagement. In addition, Moodle technology improves how students engage and interact with each other and also how they interact with their instructors. Schools can promote collaboration and improve performance by using these findings to provide learning resources to teachers and students for technology use. The study indicates the need to adopt technology such as Moodle to improve students’ critical skills and academic performanc

Young people's help-seeking: an alternative model

    No full text
This article is based on a study of young people's help-seeking. Fifty-five qualitative interviews with young people aged 13–14 are analysed to take account of stage process models. It is argued that while the models do have relevance to young people's help-seeking, they have two key limitations. First, they ignore problem legitimization. Second, they do not accord a place in young people's currenthelp-seeking to prior help-seeking pathways. The view that stage process models represent help-seeking as individualized and static led to the formulation by the author of an alternative help-seeking model, in which problem legitimization from micro to macro levels is incorporated alongside young people's prior helpseeking pathways. <br/

The jamboree was held in the Asheville City Auditorium (now known as Thomas Wolfe Auditorium) from 1948 to 1973, and Hayes’ wife, Leona Trantham Hayes (1913-1989) continued to direct the program after his death in 1964. Hubert Hayes was an author, playwright, and alumni of Duke University
