Effect of dietary supplementation with full-fat silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) chrysalis meal on growth performance and meat quality of Rhode Island Red × Fayoumi crossbred chickens
The objective was to study the effect of the partial substitution of soybean meal and oil with full-fat silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) meal (SWM) in the diet of growing chickens, on their growth and meat quality traits. A total of 195 1-day-old chicks of both sexes were allocated to 15 littered floor pens and assigned to three dietary treatments (5 replicates/treatments) until 8 weeks of age: a commercial diet (Control) and other two diets with an inclusion of either 25% (SWM25) or 50% (SWM50) SWM. At 8 weeks of age, two males/replicates were slaughtered and carcases dissected to compute yields. Pectoralis major muscle was subjected to pH and L*a*b* colour values, proximate composition and fatty acid profile analysis. All chickens showed satisfactory growth performance throughout the trial, with the best growth being observed in the SWM25 group. Carcase traits remained unaffected by the dietary treatment, but SWM25 chickens had a higher breast yield (p <.05) than the Control group. The pH of SWM50 breasts was higher than Control (p <.01). Dietary treatments affected meat protein content, differing between SWM25 and SWM50 (22.2 versus 23.3%, respectively; p <.05). SWM dietary inclusion increased n-3 PUFA and lowered the n-6 PUFA proportions in a level-dependent manner. Consequently, n-6/n-3 ratio diminished, thus improved, with the dietary SWM inclusion. Results showed that it is possible to partly substitute soybean meal/oil with SWM in the diet of chickens, ensuring satisfactory performance and carcase traits, and providing meat with a healthier n-6/n-3 ratio.Highlights Silkworm (Bombyx mori) chrysalis is a possible sustainable feed ingredient for growing chickens, alternative to conventional soybean. The dietary inclusion of silkworm full-fat meal in chicken diets provided satisfactory growth performance, carcase and meat quality traits. The dietary inclusion of full-fat silkworm meal in chicken diets enriched meat lipids with omega-3 fatty acids
Strengthening of RC beams by ferrocement made with unconventional concrete
Some countries in South Asia has very limited availability of natural stones due to geological features, therefore, most of the concrete buildings of the past are made with burnt clay brick aggregates whose strength is rather low those are more vulnerable to collapse due to any extreme loads. However, ferrocement strengthening has several advantages such as good mechanical performance, cost-effectiveness, locally availability of the materials, and simplicity, this latter making available workmanship able to implement such technique (aspect which is very important in developing countries such as Bangladesh). Hence, the paper deals with the efficacy of ferrocement technique in improving the performance of reinforced concrete beams made in low-strength concrete (beam width 230 mm, height 230 mm, and length 2135 mm). The beams are made with unconventional concrete whose strength is about 12.5-13.0 MPa. The flexural tests are performed experimentally and numerically via the finite element software ABAQUS by considering the following loading configurations: (i) 2 point loads placed at L/3, (ii) 2 point loads are to the support, (iii) 2 point loads close to the mid-span, and (iv) 1 load next to the support and 1 load on the mid-span. The experimental results have shown that unsymmetrical loading decreases the overall load carrying capacity and increases the deformability due to the localization of the damage. The ferrocement beams reinforced by steel wire mesh exhibits high ultimate load carrying capacity and more ductile behavior. The outcome of this research can be used for future modeling and for the development of appropriate design guidelines on the strengthening of concrete structures dealing with different loading conditions
A new charging scheme for ATM based on QoS
PhDNew services are emerging rapidly within the world of telecommunications. Charging
strategies that were appropriate for individual transfer capabilities are no longer appropriate
for an integrated broadband communications network. There is currently a range of
technologies (such as cable television, telephony and narrow band ISDN) for the different
services in use and a limited number of charging schemes are applicable for each of the
underlying technologies irrespective of the services used over it. Difficulties arise when a
wide range of services has to be supported on the same integrated technology such as
asynchronous transfer mode (ATM); in such cases the type of service in use and the impact
it has on the network becomes much more important. The subject of this thesis, therefore,
is the charging strategies for integrated broadband communications networks. That is, the
identification of the requirements associated with ATM charging schemes and the proposal
of a new approach to charging for ATM called the “quality of service based charging
scheme”.
Charging for ATM is influenced by three important components: the type and content of a
service being offered; the type of customer using the services; and the traffic characteristics
belonging to the application supporting the services. The first two issues will largely be
dependent on the business and regulatory requirements of the operators. The last item, and
an essential one for ATM, is the bridge between technology and business; how are the
resources used by a service quantified? Charging that is based on resource usage at the
network level was the prime focus of the research reported here.
With the proposed charging scheme, a distinction is first made between the four different
ATM transfer capabilities that will support various services and the different quality of
service requirements that may be applicable to each of them. Then, resources are
distributed among buffers set-up to support the combination of these transfer capabilities
and quality of services. The buffers are dimensioned according to the M/D/1/K and the
ND/D/1 queuing analysis to determine the buffer efficiency and quality of service
requirements. This dimensioning provides the basis for fixing the price per unit of resource
and time. The actual resource used by a connection is based on the volume of cells
transmitted or peak cell rate allocation in combination with traffic shapers if appropriate.
Shapers are also dimensioned using the quality of service parameters. Since the buffer
4
efficiency is dependent on the quality of service requirements, users (customers) of ATM
networks buy quality of service. The actual price of a connection is further subjected to a
number of transformations based on the size of the resource purchased, the time of the day
at which a connection is made, and the geographical locality of the destination switch.
It is demonstrated that the proposed charging scheme meets all the requirements of
customers and of network operators. In addition the result of the comparison of the new
scheme with a number of existing, prominent, ATM charging schemes is presented,
showing that the performance of the proposed scheme is better in terms of meeting the
expectations of both the customers and the network operators

The long-wavelength view of GG Tau A: rocks in the ring world
We present the first detection of GG Tau A at centimetre wavelengths, made with the Arcminute Microkelvin Imager Large Array at a frequency of 16 GHz (λ = 1.8 cm). The source is detected at >6 σrms with an integrated flux density of S16GHz = 249 ± 45 µJy. We use these new centimetre-wave data, in conjunction with additional measurements compiled from the literature, to investigate the long-wavelength tail of the dust emission from this unusual protoplanetary system. We use an MCMC-based method to determine maximum likelihood parameters for a simple parametric spectral model and consider the opacity and mass of the dust contributing to the microwave emission. We derive a dust mass of Md ~ 0.1 Msun, constrain the dimensions of the emitting region and find that the opacity index at λ > 7 mm is less than unity, implying a contribution to the dust population from grains exceeding ~4 cm in size. We suggest that this indicates coagulation within the GG Tau A system has proceeded to the point where dust grains have grown to the size of small rocks with dimensions of a few centimetres. Considering the relatively young age of the GG Tau association in combination with the low derived disc mass, we suggest that this system may provide a useful test case for rapid core accretion planet formation models

Expelled Spanish jesuits have been regarded by current Historiography as "cultural mediators": during their long exile in Italy (1767-1815), they developed a "Spanish Italian culture" (according to M. Batllori's definition) thanks to a meaningful syncretic approach. The author offers some brief reflections on those expelled jesuits who decided to porsue a litterary career, with a specific focus on Juan Andrés and Esteban Arteaga. Through several spanish fathers achieved a good literary success, the majority of them suffered the typical failures, delusions and troubles experienced by eighteenth century men of letters, especially those who belonged to a sector of the Republic of Letters called by Robert Darnton "Grub Street"
