    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Deformation microstructures, mechanisms, and history of a shear zone within the Chugach accretionary complex in the Nelchina area, South-Central Alaska

    Thesis (M.S.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2020Ductile-to-brittle fault zones reveal mineralogical processes that are thought to be responsible for the mechanical behavior of faults. I examined a pervasively deformed zone within the Jurassic to Cretaceous accretionary complex of southern Alaska that preserves hydrothermal alteration, dissolution precipitation, carbonaceous material (CM), clay minerals, and intracrystalline plasticity, all of which influence the strength of a fault. I characterized microstructures by SEM and EBSD, determined compositions by XRD, XRF, and Raman spectroscopy for one carbon-rich sample, and dated whole rock, rotated K-feldspar, and metamorphic muscovite by ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar thermochronology to constrain the timing and conditions of accretion, uplift, and deformation recorded by this fault zone. I interpret the specific mineralogy and complex network of deformation microstructures as a result of multiple deformation events. Highest-temperature deformation recorded within the shear zone is lower greenschist facies (400-450°C). Quartz-rich clasts preserve deformation lamellae, grain bulges, sweeping undulose extinction, pressure solution, and brittle fractures characteristic of low grade (300-400°C) at the brittle-ductile transition. Brittle overprint is expressed by fractures cross-cutting the stretched quartz phacoids, and black fault rock that has entrained stretched quartz grains. Raman spectroscopy places precipitation of the CM at ~300˚C. I therefore associate the fault-rock fabrics with progressive down-temperature deformation as the fault was exhumed. I suggest that pressure solution and mineral alteration in all fault-zone samples, as well as quartz and phyllosilicate preferred orientation in a subset of the samples, indicate aseismic slip. Growth of clay and precipitation of CM reduced the friction coefficient, lowering the frictional strength and influencing the dynamic behavior of this fault zone. Constraining the relative timing of the different slip behaviors is hard to determine. It is possible they were active at the same time, especially with the increase of width and complexity at the deeper part of the fault. What is preferentially preserved in the rock record is the latest stage of slip. Pseudotachylite structures generated during earthquakes, however, are rarely preserved due to their susceptibility to alteration. In my field area, consequent exhumation and cooling lead to progressive down-temperature brittle deformation and strong hydrothermal alteration, which could have eradicated any evidence for frictional melting. Using ⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar thermochronometry alongside regional and local age constraints, I was able to provide some insight on timing of fault-zone and local tectonic activity. The fault lies between the McHugh Complex and Valdez Group, the two main components of the Jurassic to Cretaceous Chugach accretionary prism whose development and disruption is still debated. I interpret that fault activity lasted from ca. 120 Ma to ca. 60 Ma., and was followed by two stages of accelerated uplift and cooling during ca. 40 Ma and ca. 20 Ma. The cease of major fault activity after ca. 60 Ma, the lack of pervasive strike-slip motion indicators, and the presence of undeformed Eocene dikes as well as Eocene sediments deposited on top of both the McHugh Complex and Valdez Group, suggest they were deposited in proximity and were in place in Southern Alaska at the start of the Eocene epoch.Geological Society of America, the Alaska Geological Society, and the University of Alaska Fairbank

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Bedrock geologic mapping of the Willow Creek area and deformational history of the Hatcher Pass schist, southern Talkeetna Mountains, Alaska

University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2022The Willow Creek area in the southernmost Talkeetna Mountains of south-central Alaska is the southern extent of the Wrangellia composite terrane (WCT). Most of south-central Alaska represents a subduction-accretion complex built upon the southern WCT. The purpose of this project is to better constrain the origin and evolution of the Hatcher Pass schist (HPs), a regionally retrogressed chlorite-muscovite schist with plagioclase and garnet porphyroblasts in the Willow Creek area. I conducted bedrock mapping of the Willow Creek area along with structural and petrographic analyses to better constrain the petrogenetic and structural history of the HPs, its contact with forearc sediments that lie structurally above (Arkose Ridge Fm), and mid-Cretaceous Willow Creek plutonism to the north. I determined the following tectonic evolution for the HPs: subduction and incorporation into a subduction channel occurred no later than 75 Ma. The oldest known foliation (S₁) underwent isoclinal recumbent folding (F₂) that resulted in the development of the regionally dominant fabric (S₂). Fragmented boudins, porphyroblast asymmetry, and rare S-C geometries indicate top-to-the-east shearing during D₂. Two sets of open and upright folds, with largely SW-NE and NW-SE trending fold axes, postdate the development of S₂ and define a type 1 interference pattern. I interpret F₃₋₄ to have formed during doming (F₃) and continued tectonic exhumation (corrugations; F₄) along a south-vergent detachment responsible for the juxtaposition of the HPs with the overlaying Arkose Ridge Fm.     Geochemical, Spatial, and Temporal Relationships of the Intrusives and Meta-Intrusives of the Pogo Deposit, Eastern Interior, AK

    The Pogo deposit is an intrusion-related gold deposit (IRGD) located approximately 90 km southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska. It consists mainly of shallowly NW dipping quartz veins hosted in amphibolite facies paragneiss and predominately granite orthogneiss bodies. To date the deposit has produced over 4 million ounces of gold. U-Pb zircon dating of the orthogneisses shows they have Devonian-Mississippian protolith ages. Dates from the metamorphic zircons, established by microprobe Th data and cathodoluminescence studies, constrain a mid-Cretaceous metamorphic event to ~116 Ma. Recrystallization of kyanite to sillimanite and zircon recrystallization indicates this was a large fluid flux event that predated mineralization by 10 million years. Due to the fine-grained nature of the intrusive rocks at Pogo, identifying rocks in hand sample proved problematic. By combining XRF analysis of the rocks’ major and trace elements and age data from this and previous studies, I identified and differentiated several suites of igneous rocks. The oldest is peraluminous granite, emplaced at ~2.5 ± 0.5 kb at ~109-107 Ma, predating mineralization at 104 Ma at a pressure of 2.0 kb. Non-peraluminous granite is less common and of uncertain relationship to the peraluminous granite. Next, temporally, is a body named the Football pluton (and associated dike) of granodioritic to tonalitic composition, emplaced at 2.0 ± 0.5 kb at 103 ± 2 Ma. Not only indistinguishable from age and depth of mineralization, a dike of this body is present downdip underneath the Liese veins (main zone of mineralization), making it the most likely candidate for being the causative pluton for mineralization. The final mid-Cretaceous body is the Liese pluton (and associated dikes), of quartz diorite to tonalite. This forms a large body with E-W dikes cutting the Pogo mineralization and post-dating it at 95.4 ± 0.2 Ma, emplaced at a pressure of 1.0 kb. Thermobarometry and radiometric dating indicate a consistent uplift rate of about 0.6 mm/year during the mid-Cretaceous, 116 to 95 Ma. Initially an extensional event, subduction-related magmatism began at about 105 Ma. At the same time, the thrust faults were re-activated as low angle normal faults that apparently acted as pathways for the Liese mineralization

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
