Analysis of Mathieu Equation Stable Solutions in the First Zone of Stability

    No full text
AbstractThe paper presents the results of a homogeneous Mathieu equation studies. Mathieu equation solutions are oscillations, modulated in amplitude and frequency. In the computational experiments we found dependences of the given oscillations on the ratio of the coefficients. These dependences are shown in graphs that can be used for an approximate estimation of the Mathieu equation solutions without integration

    No full text
The article serves two purposes: on the one hand, Uhel locates academic discussion around scale; and, with this, he promotes attention to this problem in contemporary struggles. In the first section, Uhel locates academic discussions around scale, as a useful methodological tool to understand the complexity of capitalist societies; in the second section, the author advances the argument around the context of the scalar dimension of capitalist imperialism; finally, the author focuses on the role of political activity on a national scale in the tense relationship between the impositions of capital and the social movement

Root type matters: measurement of water uptake by seminal, crown, and lateral roots in maize

    No full text
The ability of plants to take up water from the soil depends on both the root architecture and the distribution and evolution of the hydraulic conductivities among root types and along the root length. The mature maize (Zea mays L.) root system is composed of primary, seminal, and crown roots together with their respective laterals. Our understanding of root water uptake of maize is largely based on measurements of primary and seminal roots. Crown roots might have a different ability to extract water from the soil, but their hydraulic function remains unknown. The aim of this study was to measure the location of water uptake in mature maize and investigate differences between seminal, crown, and lateral roots. Neutron radiography and injections of deuterated water were used to visualize the root architecture and water transport in 5-week-old maize root systems. Water was mainly taken up by crown roots. Seminal roots and their laterals, which were the main location of water uptake in younger plants, made a minor contribution to water uptake. In contrast to younger seminal roots, crown roots were also able to take up water from their most distal segments. The greater uptake of crown roots compared with seminal roots is explained by their higher axial conductivity in the proximal parts and by the fact that they are connected to the shoot above the seminal roots, which favors the propagation of xylem tension along the crown roots. The deeper water uptake of crown roots is explained by their shorter and fewer laterals, which decreases the dissipation of water potential along the roots

[eng] The wage-price spiral and inflation since 1970 - The implications of the wage-price spiral have been studied in the preceding article with the help of an econometric model. This analytic framework is employed now for the study of inflation in the diverse situations that the French economy has seen since 1970. The model reveals the radical changes in behavior brought about when certain great shocks hit prices and wages. It brings to light the contrast between the second oil shock when behavorial relationships were on the whole respected and the first oil shock when there were disturbances. It measures the differentiated impact of the wageprice freeze in 1982 and of the price control policy in 1983 on wages and prices. Inflation develops under the influence of traditional factors: the evolution of farm prices, energy prices, import prices, but also gains in productivity and tensions in the employment market... The model also makes it possible to evaluate the contribution of these factors to the movement of prices. The importance of the rise of energy prices is certainly evident, but the study confirms the role of farm prices in the dynamics of inflation. Last, the model is useful for the study of the conditions of disinflation in 1984 and 1985.

It is common to hear in the fields of educational and immigration sociology that on average, the children of immigrants do not perform as well in school as children of native-born parents. Mathieu Ichou offers an innovative sociological analysis on a topic that is heavily exploited by political and media discourse, and subject to much scientific controversy. The author takes distance from the homogenized vision of a “second generation” of students who have totally failed academically, and rep..

Estimation of the hydraulic conductivities of lupine roots by inverse modelling of high-resolution measurements of root water uptake

Background and Aims Radial and axial hydraulic conductivities are key parameters for proper understanding and modelling of root water uptake. Despite their importance, there is limited experimental information on how the radial and axial hydraulic conductivities vary along roots growing in soil. Here, a new approach was introduced to estimate inversely the profile of hydraulic conductivities along the roots of transpiring plants growing in soil. Methods A three-dimensional model of root water uptake was used to reproduce the measured profile of root water uptake along roots of lupine plant grown in soil. The profile of fluxes was measured using a neutron radiography technique combined with injection of deuterated water as tracer. The aim was to estimate inversely the profiles of the radial and axial hydraulic conductivities along the roots.Key Results The profile of hydraulic conductivities along the taproot and the lateral roots of lupines was calculated using three flexible scenarios. For all scenarios, it was found that the radial hydraulic conductivity increases towards the root tips, while the axial conductivity decreases. Additionally, it was found that in soil with uniform water content: (1) lateral roots were the main location of root water uptake; (2) water uptake by laterals decreased towards the root tips due to the dissipation of water potential along the root; and (3) water uptake by the taproot was higher in the distal segments and was negligible in the proximal parts, which had a low radial conductivity. Conclusions The proposed approach allows the estimation of the root hydraulic properties of plants growing in soil. This information can be used in an advanced model of water uptake to predict the water uptake of different root types or different root architectures under varying soil conditions

L'impatto dell'attività tintoria sull'ambiente. Firenze alla fine del Medioevo

The author aims to examine and categorize the range of dyeings materials used in the Florentine wool and silk textile industries in the late Middle Ages, focusing mainly on those produced within the regional space in order to evaluate the impact of the Florentine dyeing activity on the natural environment and the productive landscape of the Tuscan countryside. In particular, the author establishes a line of demarcation between cultivated and uncultivated resources in order to verify which constitutes an indication of the level of industrial development of medieval textile production. This further focuses on how the transition from the exploitation of wild resources to the exploitation of cultivated resources could reflect a greater degree of economic integration between the countryside and the city and contribute to the formation of a regional economic space
