A labbra nude. Racconti dall'ultima Cuba

    No full text
Il volume comprende ventuno racconti inediti di autori cubani relativamente giovani e sconosciuti in Italia all’epoca della pubblicazione (1995), pur avendo alcuni una fama già solida in patria: Arturo Arango, Marilyn Bobes, Abilio Estévez, José Ramón Fajardo, Jorge Fernández Era, Luis Manuel García, Alberto Garrido, Eduardo Heras León, Francisco López Sacha, Miguel Mejides, David Mitrani Arenal, Reinaldo Montero, Leonardo Padura, Abel Prieto, Jorge Félix Rodríguez, Manuel Antonio Rodríguez, Alberto Rodríguez Tosca, José Miguel Sánchez, Rolando Sánchez Mejías, Jesús Vega, Félix Luis Viera.

The invention of the telephone in the second half of the 19th century: a disputed authorship

    No full text
The paper will deal with the invention of the telephone, an important means back in the 19th century for the invention itself, but equally important today as a relevant and 'necessary' means of short- and long-distance communication. In particular, we will analyse the figures of the main pioneers of the telephone, such as Meucci and Bell, and the legal disputes in which they fought over the paternity of the invention. Reference will then be made to the Caveat instrument obtained by Meucci and the patent attributed to Bell, analysing the debate and legal disputes that took place in the second half of the 19th century. Finally, the twentieth-century attempts by eminent scholars to recognise the paternity of the invention in the hands of the Italian inventor will be examined, up to the famous US resolution of 2002

    No full text
Introduction: The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of training status on cardiovascular function in young male recreational and competitive rowers. Methods: Ejection duration in percentage to the heart rate period (ED%), subendocardial viability ratio (SEVR), augmentation index at 75 bpm (AIx75) and carotid to femoral pulse wave velocity (cf-PWV) of competitive rowers (CR) (age 17.6 ± 4.1 years), recreational rowers (RR) (age 16.7 ± 2.70 years) and athletes practicing other recreational sports (ORS) (age 15.3 ± 1.4 years) were assessed. Results: ED% was lower in CR compared to ORS (31.9 ± 3.9% vs. 38.4 ± 4.8%; p = 0.026) and cf-PWV was higher in CR compared to ORS (5.5 ± 1.0 m/s vs. 4.7 ± 0.5 m/s; p = 0.032). SEVR was higher in CR compared to RR and ORS (165.8 ± 33.7% vs. 127.4 ± 30.4% and 128.3 ± 27.8%; p = 0.022) and AIx75 was lower in CR compared to RR and ORS (−15.7 ± 8.6% vs. 1.2 ± 9.9% and 1.5 ± 9.1; p = 0.001). Discussion: Healthy, young competitive male rowers reported higher myocardial performance and better cardiovascular health than recreational athletes. Interpretations of cf-PWV in competitive rowers should be performed alongside other cardiovascular indicators

Topical application of isosorbide dinitrate in patients with persistent constipation after pull-throught surgery for Hirschsprung's disease

Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the anal manometric changes and the clinical effects after topical application of isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN) in patients with persistent constipation after pull-through surgery for Hirschsprung's disease (HD). Methods: We studied 3 children (2 males and 1 female), aged 2, 3 and 5 years respectively, who had undergone the Soave-Boley surgical procedure for HD and who suffered from persistent constipation after operation. We performed a pre- and postoperative anorectal manometry study and we applied ISDN paste (1 mg/kg two times daily) in the anal region for three weeks. All patients were followed-up and re-evaluated at 1,3, and 6 months. Results: All patients showed an improvement of symptoms, with an average of 4 spontaneous evacuations per week. Prior to the topical treatment, the medium pressure was 115.6 mmHg (range 102-130 mmHg), the maximum pressure was 160 mmHg (range 145-175 mmHg), and the medium length of the high pressure zone was 1.8cm (range 1.5-2.0 cm). At the 6 month follow-up, the medium pressure was 57.3 mmHg (range 52-61 mmHg, a decrease of 54.4%), the maximum pressure was 98 mmHg (range 88-107 mmHg; a decrease of 38.7%), and the medium length of the high pressure zone was 1.6 cm (range 1.4-1.8 cm; a decrease of 11.1 %). Conclusions: Topical treatment with ISDN is a valid therapeutic alternative to an anal myotomy in patients with persistent constipation after pull-through surgery for HD. However, a greater number of cases and a longer follow-up are necessary to confirm the validity of our experience. © Georg Thieme Verlag KG Stuttgart New York

Tracer studies at a full-scale lagoon used as pre-treatment facility for a water treatment plant

The water treatment plant (WTP) of Turin (Italy), fed by water of river, has a lagoon as pre-treatment facility. Since the effectiveness of the lagoon treatment towards the removal of contaminants from water depends on the residence time of the system, and the mixing aspects for the limitation of peak concentration are also very important, this led to an investigation of the internal hydraulics of the lagoon. A tracer study using sodium fluoride (NaF) was performed to determine the stimulus response output and an extensive internal sampling of the tracer was also performed to better understand the movement of the tracer through the system. The lagoon investigated in the study had a surface of 151600 m2, a volume of about 1.8•106 m3 and a nominal residence time of 18 d at average daily flow (1150 L/s). An amount of NaF equal to 180 kg was diluted with about 50000 m3 of the lagoon water and introduced in the lagoon in 12 hours, in order to simulate a pulse injection. The amount of tracer added was fixed in order not to exceed the threshold concentration of 1.5 mg/L (maximum concentration value allowed in drinking water) under the hypothesis that the lagoon was not mixed at all (plug flow modality). Samples were taken from the outlet channel every 45 minutes and analyzed using a fluoride selective probe. The sampling campaign at the outlet channel was stopped after 29 days from the introduction of the tracer, when the outlet concentration dropped under the detection limit of the fluoride selective probe. Samples were also taken at 15 points (over 3 depth values, for a total of 45 sampling points) throughout the lagoon, 1, 7 and 14 days after the tracer introduction. From the interpretation of the tracer response and the tracer distribution in the lagoon in the three days of sampling, it appears that the system was efficiently mixed without relevant short circuits. In fact the first detection of the tracer at the outlet channel occurred after very few hours from the beginning of the test and the mean residence time of the lagoon, determined using the Levenspiel formula, in the presence of the flow rate used for the test, was about 13 days compared with a theoretical hydraulic residence time of 18 days. This assured that dissolved contaminants, like fluoride, from the river were efficiently diluted by the lagoon before entering the WT

Relativistic descriptions of final-state interactions in charged-current quasielastic antineutrino-nucleus scattering at MiniBooNE kinematics

    No full text
The analysis of the recent charged-current neutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections measured by the MiniBooNE Collaboration requires relativistic theoretical descriptions also accounting for the role of final-state interactions. In this work, we evaluate differential antineutrino-nucleus cross sections with the relativistic Green’s function model, where the final-state interactions are described in the inclusive scattering consistently with the exclusive scattering using a complex optical potential. The sensitivity to the parameterization adopted for the phenomenological optical potential is discussed. The predictions of the relativistic Green’s function model are compared with the results of different descriptions of final-state interactions

The analysis of charged-current quasielastic neutrino and antineutrino-nucleus scattering cross sections requires relativistic theoretical descriptions also accounting for the role of final-state interactions. We compare the results of the relativistic Green's function model with the data recently published by the MINER nu A Collaboration. The model is able to describe both MINER nu A and MiniBooNE data
