Nitrogen Availability from Swine Manure Following Anaerobic Treatment and Storage
The purpose of this research was to determine the percentage of nitrogen excreted that needs to be land applied and the effects of three factors, facility type, geographic location and lagoon loading concentrations, on the quantity of nitrogen available for land application following anaerobic treatment and storage. This quantitative research was conducted on data collected from 1995 - 1997 to determine if a correlation exists between the lagoon inflow nitrogen concentration and the percentage of nitrogen removed from a lagoon for land application purposes and the causal-comparativeness of geographic location and facility type on the percentage of nitrogen removed for land application purposes. Because this thesis was developed as quantitative research, rather than experimental research, that is, the independent variables were not manipulated, there does exist a need to be cautious or tenuous in the conclusions achieved from this study.
The study consisted of 122 facilities in Missouri (107) and Oklahoma (15). The facility breakdown was 46 Breeding/Gestation/Farrowing and Nursery (B/G/F/N) units, 6 Breeding/Gestation and Farrowing (B/G/F) units, 6 Nursery, 62 Grower/Finisher (G/F) units and 1 each genetic multiplier and Artificial Insemination (AI). Each facility was evaluated for one to three years depending on the maturity of the lagoon system. Lagoon maturity was defined as being in operation for a minimum of two (2) years. Information pertaining to the nitrogen excretion, water use rates, lagoon concentrations and effluent removal rates were determined for each facility. Following three years of data collection, it was found that the average nitrogen availability (excluding application losses) of the facilities in this study was between 23% and 52% versus the MWPS-18 value of 15% - 30% and the AWMFH estimated nitrogen availability of 20% - 30%. The nitrogen availability is defined as the estimated nitrogen available for irrigation as a percentage of estimated nitrogen excreted.
The results of this study indicate that although statistically significant, there is not a strong correlation (r = -0.21) between nitrogen availability for land application and the concentration of nitrogen entering the lagoon without the effects of net rainfall. When the effects of net rainfall are included in the inflow nitrogen concentrations, the correlation is nearly identical with r = -0.22.
Using the t-test, geographic location was shown to not have a significant effect on the nitrogen availability for land application. An analysis of variance and Scheffe test was performed to determine if nitrogen availability differed significantly between facility types. The results show that facility type does affect the percent of nitrogen available with the B/G/F/N and Nursery, Nursery and GM and GM and G/F being the only facility combinations that do not significantly differ

Revolution is a term globally recognized. Throughout Earth’s history, there have been countless social endeavors classified as revolutions. Some revolutions result in social justice, some result in the birth of a nation; on the eve of the 19th century in North America, a revolution of the latter took place. The American Revolution gave way to the formation of a new nation and a history of the United States of America began. In American and much of world history, many of the details are dominated with male driven successes, stories of male heroes, and a presidential history of all male leaders.
The revolutionary war and its history has been studied and taught for over two hundred years and during these two hundred plus years, the narrative has narrowed in on men, The Founding Fathers. However, any narrowing of information is damaging to the character of the entire era. It is for this reason, one should ask were all the founders fathers; or were some of those that made an impact on the revolution mothers and daughters too?
Although abundantly studied in academics, a public involvement in the study and commemoration of female revolutionaries is a pioneer endeavor. One of the most commemorative actions the nation can take is putting remarkable women on postage stamp that can be seen and used across the United States. The Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) was formed with the expectation impactful people, places, and things may be commemorated as the nation should see fit. Through evidence and ideas, it is evident that a stamp set about revolutionary era women is a serious contender for become the next major collectable commemorative set. (Author abstract)Summers, C.E. Evaluating network-level predictors of behavior change among injection networks enrolled in the HPTN 037 randomized controlled trial
BackgroundLittle is known about ways network-level factors that may influence the adoption of combination prevention behaviors among injection networks, or how network-oriented interventions might moderate this behavior change process.MethodsA total of 232 unique injection risk networks in Philadelphia, PA, were randomized to a peer educator network-oriented intervention or standard of care control arm. Network-level aggregates reflecting the injection networks' baseline substance use dynamics, social interactions, and the networks exposure to gender- and structural-related vulnerabilities were calculated and used to predict changes in the proportion of network members adopting safer injection practices at 6-month follow-up.ResultsAt follow-up, safer injection practices were observed among 46.31% of a network's members on average. In contrast, 25.7% of networks observed no change. Controlling for the effects of the intervention, significant network-level factors influencing network-level behavior change reflected larger sized injection networks (b=2.20, p=0.013) with a greater proportion of members who shared needles (b=0.29, p<0.001) and engaged in poly drug use at baseline (b=6.65, p=0.021). Changes in a network's safer injection practices were also observed for networks with fewer new network members (b=-0.31, p=0.008), and for networks whose members were proportionally less likely to have experienced incarceration (b=-0.20, p=0.012) or more likely to have been exposed to drug treatment (b=0.17, p=0.034) in the 6-months prior to baseline. A significant interaction suggested the intervention uniquely facilitated change in safer injection practices among female-only networks (b=-0.32, p=0.046).ConclusionsNetwork-level factors offer insights into ways injection networks might be leveraged to promote combination prevention efforts

Bryoplana xerophila n. g. n. sp., a New Limnoterrestrial Microturbellarian (Platyhelminthes, Typhloplanidae, Protoplanellinae) from Epilithic Mosses, with Notes on Its Ecology
Bryoplana xerophila, a new genus and species of limnoterrestrial protoplanelline platyhelminth, was found in moss and soil covering a concrete wall in northern Alabama, USA. Bryoplana xerophila is the first taxon of limnoterrestrial Protoplanellinae recorded from North America and is one of the few rhabdocoels known from dry habitats. It is unique within Protoplanellinae in lacking rhabdites, having a pharynx rosulatus in the frontal half of the body, and lacking sclerotized parts in the male system. Notes on encystment, reproduction and feeding behavior are given. An updated identification key to all known genera of Protoplanellinae is presented.We thank Mrs. Natascha Steffanie for sectioning and staining specimens. Freshwater Dalyelliidae from the Nearctic (Platyhelminthes, Rhabdocoela): new taxa and records from Ontario, Canada and Michigan and Alabama, USA
Nine taxa of Dalyelliidae Graff, 1908 collected from limnic habitats in Ontario, Canada and Michigan and Alabama, USA are discussed. Two taxa are new to science. Pseudodalyellia alabamensis n. gen. n. sp. has a unique combination of characters (Microdalyellia-type stylet with two proximal heteromorphic axes of different size and two distal axes with long spines flanking a central spiny plate, uterus without uterine sphincter, glandular protrusion in male atrium) and is therefore placed in a new genus. Gieysztoria choctaw n. sp. is strikingly similar to the Amazonian G. chiqchi Damborenea et al., 2005 but differs by having 13 symmetrically arranged, heteromorphic spines of different size on its fenestrated girdle. Gieysztoria pavimentata (Beklemischew, 1926) Ruebush & Hayes, 1939 and Gieysztoria rubra (Fuhrmann, 1894) Ruebush & Hayes, 1939 discovered in Alabama are the first records for these species in the Nearctic. Remarks on the morphology and distribution of the new North American records of Gieysztoria dodgei (Graff, 1911) Ruebush & Hayes, 1939, Microdalyellia fairchildi (Graff, 1911) Gieysztor, 1938, Microdalyellia rossi (Graff, 1911) Gieysztor, 1938, Castrella truncata (Abildgaard, 1789) Hofsten, 1907 and Castrella pinguis (Silliman, 1884) Fuhrmann, 1900 are given.
