Ethnobiological Classification in Two Indigenous Language of Chaco: Toba (Guaycuruan) and Maká (Mataco-Mataguayan)
This article examines the linguistic devices involved in the classification of nouns referring to the plant and animal world in two languages of the Gran Chaco area: Toba (Guaycuruan) and Maká (Mataco-Mataguayan). Drawing on previous studies of nominal classification in these languages, it analyzes how derivational morphology and nominal composition are used as mechanisms in categorizing the natural world in the formation of ethnobotanical and ethnozoological lexicon. The article contributes to the typology of nominal classification in general and in particular to that of the indigenous languages of the Gran Chaco region.Fil: Messineo, Maria Cristina.
The paper explores the alignment systems in the context of indexing in Maká (Mataco-Mataguayan), a language from Gran Chaco region. The language does not exhibit a unique alignment system but has several according to the verbal valence, the phonemic configuration of person indexes, and its location in the verbal root. In addition to a nominative-accusative alignment, this work recognizes an inactive and a hierarchical system for typically transitive verbs. In the context of ditransitive constructions, the language exhibits a pattern of split-P in which the typical transitive verbs have a secundative alignment; while in low-transitivity verbs, the alignment is indirective (Haspelmath, 2007).Fil: Messineo, Maria Cristina. Body parts in Toba: from the biological to the emotional domain
This chapter examines different patterns of lexicalization of body-part terms and their use in the linguistic expression of emotions in Toba/Qom¹ (Guaycuruan), a language of the Gran Chaco region in South America. Terms referring to both external (visible) and internal (not visible) body parts in Toba/Qom occur in idiomatic expressions which denote attributes, states, and human behavior related to emotions and cognition. These expressions, which belong to the lexical inventory of the language, show rather fixed and regular syntactic patterns, including transitive, intransitive, descriptive, and existential predicates. All cases consist of figurative expressions in which the condition or the literal behavior of the body part suggests a condition or figurative behavior of the person. Some of these expressions coexist in their extended version with their reduced internal structure, so that both are available at the same time for speakers. This kind of word formation is a dynamic process that allows the enriching of the available resources for a particular semantic field, such as emotions.
A life devoted to “the word”: The linguistic legacy of Albert and Lois Buckwalter in the Chaco evangelical project
This article focuses on the linguistic project of the Mennonite missionary couple of Albert Buckwalter and Lois Litwiller Buckwalter in the Argentine Chaco. The analysis is based on unpublished sources as well as personal interviews with Lois L. Buckwalter and publications by both. The work of translating the Bible into the Toba, Mocoví and Pilagá languages as well as the decisions regarding the elaboration of alphabets, vocabularies and grammatical notes were consistent with the academic linguistic knowledge of the time, and an integral part of their evangelizing project. This task is framed in the context of a general paradigm shift linked to the growing role of anthropology and linguistics in the formation of missionaries. The study also highlights the contribution that the work of the Buckwalter couple represents for current Chaco linguistics.Fil: Altman, Agustina. Universidad de Buenos Aires. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
