The separation distance between humans and robots in manufacturing shop-floors has been progressively reduced, thanks to the modern safety functionalities available in robot controllers. However, the activation of these safety criteria usually stops the production or reduces the productivity of machines and robots. With the aim of improving this situation, this paper presents a real-time trajectory optimisation method for collaborative robots. The robot trajectory is parameterised at instruction level, i.e. through the parameters characterizing the robot motion instruction. A genetic algorithm randomly modifies the parameters of the nominal trajectory of the robot, thus obtaining new sets of candidate trajectories. Each trajectory is simulated on a digital twin of the collaborative workspace, which allows to reproduce and simulate the robot motion, and to represent the volume of the work-cell occupied by the human operator. A lexicographic optimization is used to evaluate online the optimal robot trajectory that simultaneously minimizes the risk of collision with the human operator and the trajectory traversal time. The method is validated in an industrial scenario involving the ABB YuMi dual-arm robot for a small parts assembly task

Human-Robot Collaboration: Optimizing Stress and Productivity Based on Game Theory

In human-robot collaborative frameworks the maximization of productivity is of paramount importance. However, it is also crucial to mitigate the cognitive workload induced on the operator during cooperation. Indeed, a high level of stress can negatively affect the human capabilities, thus compromising the performance of the working dyad. In this work, we propose a novel paradigm where the robot is enabled to adapt its behavior online to simultaneously optimize in real-time the human physiological stress and productivity. The proposed control strategy exploits a game theoretic approach to model and locally estimate the state of collaboration in terms of human productivity and stress. Based on this estimate, a learning automaton suitably adjusts the production pace of the robot, thus influencing the dynamics of the cooperation. The proposed method was tested on a realistic collaborative assembly task. The results demonstrated that the novel control strategy effectively enhances the productivity of the human-robot team, while significantly mitigating the stress induced in the operator

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

With the advent of Industry 4.0, collaborative robotics has become one of the enabling technologies of the smart factory. The collaborative robots (cobots) embody the most crucial cornerstones of this industrial revolution such as adaptability, flexibility, efficiency and interoperability. To improve the effectiveness and the fluency of cooperation, the cobot must be endowed with several advanced capabilities. In particular, it should be able to select a strategy that ensures the adaptability to the behavioral, cognitive and physical features of the specific human coworker, while guaranteeing the efficiency of the productive process. This thesis aims at proposing new applications and strategies that enhance the quality of human-robot interaction (HRI) in industrial frameworks, with a major focus on solving the trade-off between human efficiency and workplace well-being. The current industrial revolution has radically changed the paradigm of the shop-floor worker which is now required to learn and perform different tasks during the same working shift. Making the collaboration between human and robot easier becomes then crucial. To exploit the recent technological developments, a novel holographic mixed-reality (MR) interface has been developed to support the operator during the learning phase of a new collaborative task. Besides, by incorporating the sensing capabilities of a MR headset with the ones of the work-cell vision system, a constrained particle filer-based method has been developed to improve the robot perception of the human operator in case of partial occlusion of his/her body. Furthermore, a digital twin (DT) of the collaborative workspace has been exploited both to simulate the robot motion, and to represent the work-cell volume occupied by the human operator. Based on this knowledge, the cognitive unit supervising the work-cell has been enabled to evaluate online the optimal trajectory for the cobot. This simultaneously minimizes the risk of collisions as well as the robot cycle time, by leveraging a genetic approach. These researches allowed to increase the human safety and the robot adaptation capabilities. The impact of crucial human factors such as cognitive, physical distress and interaction role (whether being leader or follower during cooperation) in influencing the quality and effectiveness of human-robot interaction has been a major focus of this thesis. In particular, a detailed analysis on how the interaction role of the robot influences the psycho-physiological response and the production rate of the human fellow operator has been carried out. Based on that, a novel method exploiting a game-theoretic approach has been proposed to model the trade-off between the human performance maximization and cognitive stress minimization. Besides, the outcomes of the previous analysis have been pivotal to develop a novel robot adaptive control strategy. More specifically, the robot has been endowed with the capability of applying a suitable alternation of the leader-follower interaction modes, based on the real-time evaluation of human stress and performance, with the aim of simultaneously increasing the human productivity and mitigating his/her cognitive stress. Ultimately, a real-time task allocation strategy has been developed to guarantee the minimization of the human physical fatigue, as well as the effectiveness of the production process. This strategy relies on a sophisticated musculoskeletal model of the human upper body. The effectiveness of the proposed methods has been experimentally validated in realistic human-robot collaborative scenarios involving several volunteers.DIPARTIMENTO DI ELETTRONICA, INFORMAZIONE E BIOINGEGNERIASystems and Control34BASCETTA, LUCAPIRODDI, LUIG

In a human-robot collaborative framework, endowing the robot with the capability of recognizing in advance the operator's intention proved to be beneficial for enhancing the quality of the cooperation. In this Thesis the problem of intention inference is addressed by using a new recursive Bayesian classifier which is capable of inferring simultaneously the most likely right hand and left hand reaching targets, relying on a set of measured skeletal positions. These measurements, retrieved by means of an RGB-D camera, include both wrist positions and an estimate of the operator's gaze. Indeed, this latter measure constitutes a powerful means of nonverbal communication exploited by humans to make their inner intents more explicit. In a collaborative framework, its use appears to be crucial for further improving the inference process, since its observation could provide an additional indication about the target the operator's hand will be intended to reach. The likelihood function which jointly considers the contribution of this wide set of observations is modelled through a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM), learnt from data in a supervised manner. Since the exact goal positions are uncertain, each target location is described as a random variable having a certain probability distribution. The performance achieved through the new inference algorithm highlighted that the gaze measure was fundamental for guaranteeing higher robustness to the inference process. Moreover, the benefits of establishing a human-robot bidirectional information exchange during the collaborative process are investigated. Indeed, while the inference process is ongoing, the human co-worker could be kept informed about the prediction performed by the robot, for instance, by receiving an haptic feedback in the crucial phases of the collaboration. Considering all these aspects together can definitely improve the effectiveness of the collaboration

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

The latest industrial revolution, denoted as Industry 4.0, is encouraging the integration of intelligent production systems and advanced information technologies. In this scenario, the Mixed Reality devices are gaining momentum due to the possibility of improving the operator working experience by adding holographic information to the objects of the real environment where he operates. This innovative technology offers new possibilities for what concerns the human-robot interaction, allowing to introduce new methodologies through which industrial robots can be programmed, even remotely. In this Thesis a novel holographic interface that allows the operator to program the robot path as equivalent holographic teaching by showing procedure, is proposed. The holographic content is projected in the real user environment through a MR headset, Microsoft HoloLens, that is worn by the operator. To achieve these objectives, first, the real robot structure (ABB IRB 140) is reproduced holographically, to obtain a virtual copy of the real manipulator. Secondly, the holographic robot is endowed with the same motion capabilities of the real one. Then, through the holographic interface, the user can specify the robot path by generating and editing through hand-gestures an arbitrary number of way-points, that the robot end-effector has to cover. The selected way-points are converted into the corresponding robot join angles through the inverse kinematic procedure. Then, these variables are communicated in real-time to the robot controller, through a TCP/IP communication protocol that allows the HoloLens and the real robot to exchange data. Exploiting the ABB RobotStudio software, the robot path is programmed in joint-space and communicated back to HoloLens. Hence, it can be previewed by the user. The performances of this holographic interface are evaluated according to a usability study, where 20 participants were asked to program the robot. The results of this study showed the potentiality of this innovative methodology that provides an intuitive way to program industrial robots. Conversely, some users noticed that wearing HoloLens could be uncomfortable, especially after prolonged usage

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Collaborative robotics aims at integrating the accuracy and repeatability of an industrial robot with the skills and flexibility of a human operator in performing complex tasks, thus increasing the level of adaptability of the whole team. Robots designed to work side by side with humans often rely on vision sensors to acquire knowledge about the surrounding environment and their human partners, both for safety and for coordination issues. Therefore, a potential improvement in this field consists in increasing the accuracy of the human pose estimation. This problem requires to determine in real time the space occupied by the operator, as well as his/her movements. This goal clashes with the difficulty of acquiring and correlating enough data while relying on a single fixed sensor. The purpose of this thesis is to provide an innovative approach that improves the human pose estimation procedure, while reducing the associated uncertainty. To this aim, a constrained version of the Particle Filter algorithm was created. In fact, the traditional Particle Filter algorithm was integrated with a detailed virtual model of the real environment where a human operator and a robot can cooperate. Moreover, a constraint based on the limits of mobility of the human joints was added. In this way the estimate of the unknown or uncertain human pose is allowed to propagate in a well-limited volume, whose boundaries are given by the geometrical surfaces of the operator's environment and the ones due to his/her physical structure. The user's environment was reconstructed using the Mixed Reality device Microsoft HoloLens v1, while the human skeletal poses during the working activity were acquired with the Microsoft Kinect v2. To build a unique model able to describe the workspace, these data were merged using a technique based on the simultaneous pose estimation of a fiducial marker, a ChArUco board. The results obtained in a comparative experimental validation in a realistic industrial scenario showed that the improvements to the algorithm reduced both the error and the uncertainty associated to the estimation procedure, respectively of the 25\% and of the 90\% on average, with respect to the original Particle Filter version
