Smith, alias Banty Smith, alias Bronco Smith, alias Harry Franklin. alias Charles Moore, the supposed murderer of Minnie Taylor, who was called to her door and assassinated on the night of November 18th, 1897, Smith is described &s being 22 to 25 years 'old: height about 5 feet 5 to 7 inches; slightly stooped in shoulders; weight about 140 or 150 pounds; rather chunky in build: rather short face; dark hair an<l dark hazel eyes; has habit of winking or drawing his eyes up when talking: mean countenance: rarely looking you in the eye when in conversation: is addicted to the cigarette habit; when left, here had abort, stubby, dark moustache (but may be clean shaven now); wore dark or dark blue cloths, brown overcou.t and stiff hat. The State of Illinois offers 200 Dollars reward for the arrest and conviction of the murderer. Anyone arresting Smith and wiring S. Auf dem Weg zu der Antwort wird klar, wie schwer es wäre, ein solches Recht zu erfüllen und wie besonders das Verhältnis zwischen Recht und Sprache ist. Formeln und Hinweise zum Verfassen verständlicher Texte fi nden ihre Grenzen in der Komplexität der zu regelnden Materie. Wo Bestimmtheit zwingend erscheint, um Akzeptanz zu erreichen, bietet Sprache Vagheit. Gerichtliche Entscheidungen sind für Fachleute schwer und für Laien kaum vorherzusehen. Noch komplexer werden diese Fragestellungen und Herausforderungen, wenn der Aspekt der Mehrsprachigkeit ins Spiel kommt. Dann muss übersetzt werden. Dabei sind Fehler wahrscheinlich und Unklarheiten nicht zu vermeiden. Die Fassungen weichen zwingend voneinander ab, sind aber, jedenfalls im Europarecht, gleichermaßen verbindlich. Wie kann in der Rechtsanwendung mit diesen Bedeutungsunterschieden umgegangen werden? Soll es eine Fassung geben, die im Zweifel vorrangig ist; soll die Mehrheit der Fassungen entscheidend sein? Solche Lösungen würden bedeuten, dass sich der Bürger nicht auf seine Sprachfassung verlassen kann. Wie mit diesem Widerspruch umgegangen werden kann, zeigt der zweite Teil der Arbeit
