    1927 flood in Desha County

    No full text
One-page questionnaire with handwritten responses. Merritt describes his family's experiences with flooding in Kelso, Arkansas, where he was living with his mother and siblings.Ira Wilson Merritt Sr. (1911-2007) was a civil engineer. He married Imogene Vail Merritt and lived for a time at Marianna, Lee County, Arkansas. He is buried at Marianna Memorial Park Cemetery.[Page 1] THE 1927 FLOOD IN DESHA COUNTY Do you realize that April 1976 will mark the 49th year since the awful flood that covered the County? People living today who experienced that catastrophe have not forgotten. Those who were not here are always curious to know more about it. That is why the Society wants to compile accounts of personal experiences of the people who were there. Will you please help by answering the following questions for us: 1. Give your full name and present address. Ira W. Merritt 302 Hillcrest St. Marianna, Arkansas 72360 2. Where were you when the Flood came? Living at home with my mother, brothers & sisters at Kelso 3. Did you actually see the water come in? Please describe briefly how it looked to you. A couple days before the water got to Kelso, I rode to a wash out with Mr. A. L. Landers on his motor car and watched the water run over a low section of the R. R. The water was muddy and made a terrific sound flowing over the R. R. embankment. 4. How high-approximately-did the water rise in your community and in your home? To the eaves of our home. The house did not float off the blocks. 5. Where did you stay until the water went down? Railroad cars at Yancopin and later to Cleveland, Mississippi. 6. Please tell briefly about the incident or incidents you remember most clearly. Any amusing incidents? I had been working for some time to put together discarded items, when assemblled would produce electricity. I had collected a Maxwell engine and chasis, the transmission from a motorcycle, and a generator from a Delco light plant. This contrivance was assembled behind the house. It had been used on several occasions to light one room before the flood came. 7. What damage was done to your property - home, land, etc? Every thing in our house was a loss. The surrounding farm land was covered with about 2' to 3' of sand. We took shovels and a hoe to remove about three inches of mud on the floor. Send replies to Mrs. J. H. Stroud, P. O.
