Foraminiferal assemblages and organic matter relationships in a coastal lagoon on the arid coast of the Southeast Pacific
The Southeast Pacific arid zone, encompassing Peruvian and Chilean coastal deserts, features several wetlands that are influenced by upwelling waters and provide critical ecosystem services. Despite the significance of wetlands like the coastal lagoon Poza La Arenilla (PLA) in Lima, Peru, their proximity to urban areas exposes them to eutrophication. This, in turn, presents considerable challenges for conservation efforts. Effective conservation strategies demand a comprehensive assessment of trophic conditions, achieved here by studying living and dead benthic foraminifera assemblages. These microorganisms serve as bioindicators for organic sources and enrichment. We explored their relationships with hydrological factors (dissolved oxygen, temperature, salinity) and sedimentary parameters (total organic matter, carbon, nitrogen, stable isotopes) in the PLA. Our results show that foraminifera distribution is influenced by organic matter (OM) from marine phytoplankton/algae and bacterial sources. Foraminifera were dominated by hyaline and soft-walled species, and 4 distinct foraminiferal assemblages were identified. Psammophaga sp1 prevailed in areas with abundant OM, while Bathysiphon sp. was associated with less organic conditions in sandy sediments. Additionally, Quinqueloculina seminulum, Buliminella elegantissima, Ammonia confertitesta, and Bathysiphon sp. were frequent and abundant species in the PLA. Dead assemblages showed a 2-fold increase in species richness compared to living foraminifera, indicating seasonal species turnover. Our study evidenced the importance of the whole diversity of foraminifera for environmental and/or ecological assessments, as groups of soft-walled and agglutinated foraminifera comprise potential bioindicators for eutrophication
Universidad Nacional Agraria La Molina. The community of benthic foraminifera and its relationships with environmental factors were studied in shallow sedimentary environments of Peruvian central coast. For this, in situ measurements were made and sediment samples were taken between October and November of 2014 in three locations: Huacho-Salinas zone, Miraflores Bay and Paracas Bay. Spatial variability of environmental factors and community parameters was assessed by using Principal Components Analysis and Cluster Analysis respectively, while their relationships were examined by using multiple correlations and a Canonical Analysis of Principal Coordinates. Substrate geochemical properties had great variations while bottom waters limiting factors had moderate variations due to the influence of coastal upwelling. At total in the community, 11 benthic foraminiferal taxa were identified, of which Bolivina costata was far superior in abundance, followed by Buliminella elegantissima and Allogromiidae. Small calcareous species from Rotaliida order dominated the community, even though organic-shelled foraminifera from Allogromiida order had an important contribution as well. The density of community was concentrated in the two most superficial centimeters of the sediments. Diversity, as species equitability, was favored by organic matter and temperature. Community structure varied mainly due to differences in substrate geochemical properties, associated to differences in hydrodynamic regimes of sedimentary environments, and to differences in temperature. B. elegantissima appears more relevant in shallow sheltered environments, which accumulate organic matter. The preservation of calcareous taphocenosis in sediments is usually better under intense or moderate hydrodynamic regimes since organic matter accumulation in weak regimes makes conditions favorable to calcareous tests dissolution more likely.Tesi
Ecological quality assessment of the Paracas Bay (Peru, 14°S) through bioindicators of the sediments: the benthic foraminifera
Eutrophication of coastal marine environments is described as an increasing rate of supply of organic matter to the bottom ecosystem. In the coastal area of Pisco-Paracas, Peru, a process of eutrophication induced by organic pollution from the fishmeal industry developed between 1964 and 2004, the effects of which on communities of benthic organisms have not been studied. Currently, Paracas Bay is a shallow marine environment (<15 m deep) in which there are natural conditions of bottom hypoxia, of a poorly described regime, which is habitat for a benthic fauna that is low diverse but tolerant to such conditions. Among benthic organisms, foraminifera (testate protists) represent one of the main dominant groups in oxygen-deficient environments such as the Peruvian coast. Due to their diversity and adaptations to specific environmental conditions, benthic foraminifera are suitable to be used as indicators of the ecological quality of coastal ecosystems. Furthermore, the tests of foraminifera are potentially preserved in the sedimentary record, allowing us to reconstruct the ecological quality of an environment in the past. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the ecological quality of Paracas Bay associated with the eutrophication process induced by the fishmeal industry, by integrating environmental, ecological, and paleo-ecological approach based on benthic foraminifera. For this, specific objectives were addressed in the chapters of this document, such as: the determination of the main factors that control the bottom oxygen regime on time scales using environmental monitoring data (Chapter 2), the characterization of the assemblages of benthic foraminifera, their spatiotemporal variability and associated abiotic factors (Chapters 3 and 4); and finally, historical changes in the organic enrichment of the sediments and the preserved assemblages of benthic foraminifera were evaluated, along with their relationships with the geochemical variability of the sediments in the last 100 years, through the analysis of a sedimentary record from the Paracas Bay (Chapter 5). Between 1964 and 2004, industrial organic pollution in the Pisco-Paracas coastal area induced eutrophic conditions in the environments at the bottom of Paracas Bay, which did not affect, however, the structure of the benthic foraminiferal assemblage of the bay, given that the same dominant species (adapted to tolerate anoxic and sulfurous conditions) characterized the assemblages before, during and after the period of greatest industrial influence. This led to the conclusion that the ecological quality of Paracas Bay was not degraded in that period. However, the sediments of Paracas Bay accumulated more and more organic matter derived from phytoplankton that along with changes associated with other natural or anthropogenic processes, would have caused a recent change in the dominant foraminiferal species (from Bolivina costata to Buliminella elegantissima) reflecting the current severe eutrophic conditions
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
