Political Careers or Career Politicians?
Two main career paths are prevalent among politicians in modem democracies: there are career politicians (i.e., politicians who work in the political sector until retirement), and political careers (i.e., there are politicians who leave politics before retirement and work in the private sector). In this paper, we propose a dynamic equilibrium model of the careers of politicians in an environment with a private sector and a political sector, where individuals are heterogeneous with respect to their market ability and political skills. Our analysis provides an explanation for the existence of career politicians and individuals with political careers, and their motivations. We also investigate the effects of monetary incentives and other features of the political-economic environment on the quality of politicians and their careers. We show that an increase in the salary a politician receives while in office decreases the average quality of individuals who become politicians, decreases turnover in office, and may either decrease or increase the average quality of career politicians
Modeling the energy consumption of an IDS: a step towards Green Security
Due to the proliferation of wideband and
Internet technologies in the last decade, the risk of
security threats hidden in single packets arose. This had
taken ISP networks to the adoption of Intrusion
Detection Systems, enhancing the basic routing with
packets inspection, in order to provide a secure
connection service. Currently, packet analysis is
provided by almost each ISP but it has a high impact in
term of performance and energy consumption; this
makes the choice of the optimal IDS strategy both a key
and non-trivial issue. To this aim, IDS strategies have
been deeply investigated in term of performance, while
the assessment of the energy consumption is quite
unexplored. In this paper, we propose the first attempt
towards the assessment of the energy impact of security
solutions. In particular, we provide a general model for
evaluating the energy cost of distributed packet
inspection in IDS and we show how it can be applied to
two sample IDS strategies, in order to evaluate the
energy leakage due to a late discovery of rogue packets

Reliability, smallest real difference and concurrent validity of indexes computed from GRF components in gait of hemiplegic patients
The morphology of ground reaction force (GRF) components acquired during gait provides information on both loading and progression ability of a patient [1]. These abilities can be monitored throughout the rehabilitation process by using force plates. Numerical indexes that summarize force plate data, such as peaks and areas, are described in literature [1]
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Applications in movement and gait analysis
Motion analysis is based on measuring trajectories, rotations of joints, torque values, temporal events, and muscle activities. Force plates embedded in the floors of motion analysis laboratories measure force transfer between foot and ground during gait. Kinematics, kinetics, and surface electromyography (sEMG) are used to identify the causes of motion impairment and the resulting compensatory movements, thus enhancing clinical assessment and supporting decisions such as choice of surgery, orthoses, and rehabilitation protocols. Surface EMG can provide information on the origin of motion produced by muscle activation. EMG during task execution enables muscle activities to be assessed rather than inferred from a combination of observation of movements and clinical evaluation performed under static conditions. To ensure data reliability in applications of motion analysis, raw sEMG data on a fixed y-axis scale must be checked before five criteria: filtering, envelope computation, data normalization, clinical report creation, and statistical analysis for research purposes
