When King Arthur met the Venus : Romantic Antiquarianism and the Illustration of Anne Bannerman’s “The Prophecy of Merlin”

    No full text
The first edition of Bannerman’s Tales of Superstition and Chivalry (1802) contained an erotic engraving of a naked Venus figure, which was declared ‘offensive to decency’ by Scottish audiences in the poet’s native Edinburgh. Garner’s account investigates the controversy surrounding the engraving and the puzzling disparity between it and the ballad it illustrated: the Arthurian-themed ‘Prophecy of Merlin’. Using evidence from Bannerman’s correspondence with noted Scottish male publishers and antiquarians, this essay argues that decision to include the dangerous engraving was symptomatic of current anxieties surrounding a female-authored text which threatened to encroach on antiquarian and Arthurian enquiry.Peer reviewe

    Merlin: between the keys

    No full text
Merlin is a ten-minute solo marimba piece written in two movements. Since its premier in 1985, Merlin has become a well-known standard of the percussion repertoire. The composer, Andrew Thomas, included two short excerpts from the poem "Merlin" by Edwin Arlington Robinson, which are meant to add meaning to the music. This paper will delve deep into the compositional process of Merlin, including historical reasons for inclusion of the text on the score of the manuscript. I will also investigate a few of the performers of the Merlin, including John Parks IV and William Moersch, who commissioned the work. There will also be analysis on the preparation required for the performance, including analytical and technical demands from their perspectives and my own. I will also discuss errata and audience reception of the work.Includes bibliographical references (page 25)California State University, Northridge. Department of Music
