Electropermeabilization of isolated cancer stem cells with a novel and versatile nanosecond pulse generator
This paper presents the use of a novel electro-poration generator with an artificial 50Ω buffer for possible real-time neutralization of cancer stem cells. The results from an initial bench study investigates the development of an electro-poration generator capable of delivering non-thermal treatment with an original cuvette housing unit and its effects on isolated cancer stem cell. Initial permeabilization investigation of cancer stem cells were conducted, indicating that the developed protocols and devices have a strong potential future use in achieving electro-manipulation of cancer stem cells. © 2018 IEEE
A wide-band bio-chip for real-time optical detection of bioelectromagnetic interactions with cells
The analytical and numerical design, implementation, and experimental validation of a new grounded closed coplanar waveguide for wide-band electromagnetic exposures of cells and their optical detection in real-time is reported. The realized device fulfills high-quality requirements for novel bioelectromagnetic experiments, involving elevated temporal and spatial resolutions. Excellent performances in terms of matching bandwidth (less than -10 dB up to at least 3 GHz), emission (below 1 × 10-6 W/m2) and efficiency (around 1) have been obtained as revealed by both numerical simulations and experimental measurements. A low spatial electric field inhomogeneity (coefficient of variation of around 10 %) has been achieved within the cell solutions filling the polydimethylsiloxane reservoir of the conceived device. This original bio-chip based on the grounded closed coplanar waveguide concept opens new possibilities for the development of controlled experiments combining electromagnetic exposures and sophisticated imaging using optical spectroscopic techniques. © 2018 The Author(s)
Infrared thermography: a possible role in psychophysiology of sport?
Infrared thermography (IRT) is an upcoming, promising methodology in the field of psychophysiology. Mental and emotional components of behavior play an important role in the determination of human performance in sporting competition scenario. Driven by sympathetic nerves activity, affective and emotional states derive from muscular activity, skin blood flow and perspiration patterns in specific body parts. The goal of this chapter is to introduce assessment of emotional states and computational psychophysiology through thermal infrared imaging in sport and exercise
A comparative analysis between customized and commercial systems for complex permittivity measurements on liquid samples at microwave frequencies
In this paper, different customized systems for microwave permittivity measurements on liquid samples, based on reflectometric measurements, are presented and analyzed. Their performance is compared against the one deriving from the most widely adopted commercial measurement setup. The systems are designed with the aim of providing less expensive solutions without compromising measurement accuracy. The purpose of the first proposed solution is to replace the commercial measurement software exploiting a reformulation of the classical theory. Based on this alternative formulation, a 'homemade' probe is built by properly modifying an N-type coaxial connector, thus providing a system requiring a lower quantity of liquid under test. Moreover, a different experimental approach which uses time-domain reflectometry (TDR) instrumentation is presented. Such solution is by far the least expensive, as it allows avoiding the use of costly instrumentation (such as a vector network analyzer). In order to metrologically characterize the proposed solutions, a series of repeated measurements is performed on a set of well-referenced liquids. After extracting the Cole-Cole parameters through each of the considered measurement methods, the resulting type A uncertainty is evaluated. Finally, comparison with literature data allows the estimation of measurement bias. The analysis evidences that custom solutions generally exhibit an accuracy comparable to the one of the commercial solution, with a slight degradation of performance for the TDR-based setup, which, however, compensates for this drawback with its appealing low cost. © 1963-2012 IEEE
Characterization of a portable and low cost system for practical dielectric spectroscopy
A portable setup for measurements of complex permittivity based on ad-hoc arrangements is proposed and its performance compared to the ones of a bench system. The measurement setup consists of a portable spectrum analyzer (used as vector network analyzer, VNA) connected to an open-end coaxial cable for S11 acquisition. Scattering parameters were processed using custom Labview software specifically developed to obtain complex permittivity of liquids and soft materials in real-time. A suitable calibration procedure, based on a differential principle, enables accurate measurements. Raw results showed that the portable setup provides noisier traces if compared to the performance of a high precision laboratory VNA. However, accurate permittivity data have been achieved introducing filtering to eliminate signal oscillations and spurious noise without loss of information associated to liquid dielectric relaxations. This procedure, applied to standard liquids (ethanol, ethanediol, 2-propanol) showed good performance in terms of bias and precision. Water solutions, used for cell culturing purposes, both conductive and non-conductive, were also successfully measured. The obtained results are a proof of concept that the proposed procedure is a reliable technique to perform fast, low-cost and on site permittivity measurements, useful for diagnostic or therapeutic applications. © 2018 IEEE
Bullying Perpetration and Victimization in Early Adolescence: Physiological Response to Social Exclusion
The present study investigated the associations between bullying perpetration and victimization and physiological reactivity to social exclusion. The participants were 28 early adolescents (17 boys and 11 girls; Mage= 11.55; SD = 1.34). Bullying perpetration and victimization were assessed by peer nominations. To elicit social exclusion, participants were first included and then excluded in a laboratory paradigm (Cyberball). Physiological reactivity (i.e., nose tip temperature) was detected through thermal infrared imaging during the computer simulation. Nose temperature variations during inclusion and exclusion were compared between each other. Results showed increasing skin temperature during exclusion, compared to inclusion, for the whole sample, indicating that being excluded affected physiological reactivity. However, victimization was associated with higher skin temperature during exclusion, compared to bullying. The present findings suggest the importance of combining behavioral and contact-free physiological measures when studying bullying perpetration and victimization by peers
