The main elements of the spirituality of the congregation of the companions of Saint Angela Merici in the diocese of Johannesburg.
Thesis (M.Th.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2003.The study investigates the spirituality of the Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici a Catholic women religious community. This religious Congregation was founded in 1954 in the diocese of Johannesburg, to serve the needs of the indigenous people. The person who founded this Congregation was Bishop William Patrick Whelan aMI, with the encouragement and support of Father Jean Verot aMI. At first the Catholic Church was a settler Church taking care of the needs of the settlers. It is only later that the Catholic Church became a missionary Church, outreaching to indigenous people. It is in the 1950's when the Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela was founded , during the apartheid time. The history and the spirituality of the Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici are looked at. The first members of the Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici were trained and guided by the Ursulines, of the Roman Union in Munsieville, Krugersdorp. Some of the elements of the spirituality of this women 's religious Congregation that are explored are mutual love, hospitality, prayer life and education. The Sisters of the religious Congregation looked to Saint Angela Merici, their foundress and model , an Italian Saint who lived in the sixteenth century , and learned from her spirituality. The Sisters living In the twentieth century look at how relevant Saint Angela Merici's spirituality is to them, and how they as black women, in townships, can live this spirituality. Interviews were conducted to get some information about the religious Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici. A questionnaire was send to two Sisters who belong to this religious Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici but only Sister Mary Modise CSA responded positively to being interviewed. Father Thomas O'Dea, a Missionary Oblate of Mary Immaculate gave some direct information that he remembered regarding this particular Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici. A final conclusion to be drawn from this study is that the Congregation of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici is faced with the challenge to inculturate some of the elements of this spirituality and re-Iook at their charism at some General Chapters. Lastly, some of the challenges that face the present Congregation of Sisters of the Companions of Saint Angela Merici are formation and a way of practically living the charism and their prayer life

Angela Merici: The way of an urban prophet. A pre-modern narrative for a post-modern world
This study examines our human vocation through the life and pedagogy of Angela Merici. Merici was a 16th century Italian woman, who founded The Company of St. Ursula. Shortly, after her death it became the Ursuline Order. This work seeks to demonstrate that Merici\u27s life-mission was to reclaim our Christian Story and vocation that was subverted by the ideology of patriarchy during the Italian Renaissance. A pre-modern narrative for a post-modern world, Merici\u27s life, the study proposes, was a prophetic impulse that has implications for our current familial, social and political structures, as well as for life within the Church and society today. The research design utilizes the symbolic metaphor of Beauty to explore the pre-modern narrative of Merici as a way to educate towards our human vocation in a post-modern world. An aesthetic hermeneutical lens is employed to bridge themes of Merici\u27s pedagogy to current religious education theory and practice. The symbol of Beauty emerged from the research as a political educative form of life that stands in resistance to destructive and deceptive structures created by nullified patriarchal symbols of the 16th century. The central thesis of this study argues that Merici\u27s pedagogy can be re-conceptualized if seen through a dialogue between the problems experienced by enslaving symbols in her culture and the current problems created by the deadening symbols of a mechanistic, patriarchal, and consumerist culture in the United States. The work proposes that the symbolic expression of Merici\u27s narrative educated towards a form of cultural resistance that liberated women, children, and men to be refashioned in the image of God. It purports that as religious educators, it is our moral responsibility to create a new pedagogy that no longer suppresses our spiritual gifts, and that liberates our religious imagination and inner wisdom so that we might overcome the oppressive hierarchical structures that no longer function redemptively in the world today

Attraverso le soglie del tempo e dello spazio. Le orsoline di Angela Merici nell’Australia di oggi
The Australian Ursulines represent an original case of contemporary female religiosity, which overcomes the boundaries of the religious and the secular, the past and the present, the female and the universal. Their model of religious life is a-institutional, inward-looking, a-hierarchical, democratic, and respectful of the members’ choices. Furthermore, in their participation to civic life, the Australian Ursulines promote innovative social and political initiatives. They have recently developed these characteristics in continuation with the spirit and thought of the sixteenth-century foundress of their order, Angela Merici
A Woman Obedient to the Holy Spirit – Saint Angela Merici
obecność w niej samej, w innych ludziach, w wydarzeniach. The puropse of this article was to investigate how Saint Angela was obedient to the Holy Spirit in her life? An analysis of the witnesses in her life and of her writings showed that the Holy Spirit was leading Saint Angela Merici from her early childhood and youth. During difficult experiences, like the death of her parents and sister, she was open to the love of God and wanted to belong to Him. God lead her and she became sensitive to the presence of Him in herself, in other people and in everyday events. She loved the word of God, was deeply involved in prayer and lived an ascetic life. She was open to the gifts and charisms of the Holy Spirit and she was especially gifted with wisdom, the gift of prophecy and holy virginity. All of these gifts were given to her for the good of the Church and especially for the Ursuline community that gathered around her. She became a prophetic sign for the whole Church. She was a Bride of the Son of God and she showed that the Church is also a Bride of Jesus Christ
