Thinking together with ICT and primary mathematics

    No full text
The Thinking Together approach gets children thinking. Research has shown that talking and thinking together while using computers can develop reasoning skills and improve learning. Mathematics software, especially team strategy games played against the computer, provide a tremendously motivating context for children to learn how to think. This pack provides teachers and teacher trainers with everything that they need to start Thinking Together with ICT in mathematics. Everything in it has been tried and tested and shown to work. It is the product of a Nuffield funded Open University research project working in collaboration with SMILE. While the pack has been developed to support effective INSET it could equally well be used by individual teachers

    Natured

" Curated by Claire Christie and Sandra Gregson, this exhibition addresses the relationship between the body and its environment, particularly to what we know as nature. Resonating throughout the works is the impulse to identify with something, to fix an identity. Rather than assuming either harmony or dichotomy, natured provokes a complex reconsideration of the body in relation to nature, while acknowledging the mediating influences of technology and perception. Grasping at straws: a ratings downgrade for the emerging international financial architecture

    No full text
Following the Asia crisis of 1997-98, policymakers invested a great deal of energy in designing a new international financial architecture. However many of the policy proposals which have emerged from think tanks and the multilateral agencies have proven unworkable or politically unpalatable. The debate focuses on state-led initiatives. But the assumption that public policy is by definition an output of public institutions is difficult to sustain in an era of global change. This paper considers specialized forms of intelligence-gathering and judgment-determination which seem increasingly important as sources of governance in this era of financial market volatility. These agents - embedded knowledge networks (EKNs) - include the major bond rating agencies, Moody’s Investors Service and Standard and Poor’s, the focus of this paper. The Basel Committee has put forward a serious proposal to reform the existing capital adequacy framework which uses banks' own internal ratings and external bond ratings to calculate bank risk-weighted capital requirements. The paper shows that there are potentially unexpected consequences from using private rating agencies as a substitute for state-based regulation, due to the organizational incentives that shape the ratings industry. Cementing these organizational incentives into the emerging financial architecture will give rise to negative social and economic consequences

Tagging of Biomedical Articles on CiteULike: A Comparison of User, Author and Professional Indexing

    No full text
This paper examines the context of online indexing from the viewpoint of three different groups: users, authors, and professional indexers. User tags, author keywords and descriptors were collected from academic journal articles, which were both indexed in Pubmed and tagged on CiteULike, and analysed. Descriptive statistics, informetric measures, and thesaural term comparison shows that there are important differences in the use of keywords between the three groups in addition to similarities which can be used to enhance support for search and browse. While tags and author keywords were found that matched descriptors exactly, other terms which did not match but provided important expansion to the indexing lexicon were found. These additional terms could be used to enhance support for searching and browsing in article databases as well as to provide invaluable data for entry vocabulary and emergent terminology for regular updates to indexing systems. Additionally, the study suggests that tags support organisation by association to task, projects and subject while making important connections to traditional systems which classify into subject categories

Thunder, Indians, and Mythological Birds: School Mascot Changes in Western Wisconsin

    No full text
In American society, people identify themselves not just with their creed, race, or ethnicity, but also their sports teams. This tightly knit identity creates a culture within itself that presents the beliefs, norms, and way of life of the people intertwined within it. While most prominent at NCAA Division I and professional levels, this identification also occurs at the local level, such as at high schools and smaller colleges. In some situations schools are forced to change their mascot or team name. This paper will examine an identity crisis at three separate schools in western Wisconsin during the second half of the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries and explain how the schools went about choosing a new mascot or team name. The three different case studies will examine controversial identities, lack of an identity, and popularity creating an identity

Autobiographical memories and letters from Claire Lange: a phenomenological analysis

    No full text
This research refers to autobiographical documents (letters and memories) about immigration experiences, written by Claire Reuge Lange. Claire arrived in Brazil in August 1887. While she lived here, she wrote many letters to her adoptive parents, who stayed in Germany. Claire Reuge Langes memories are about the Brüderthals colony settling in the city of Joinville, Santa Catari-na. The main objective of this research is the studying of the 13 letters written by Claire and her memories, in which we sought to analyze the impacts of the changes of context, lived by the author. In order to achieve it, we performed an analysis of her living experiences portrayed on her letters, taking into ac-count the psychological function of the epistolary correspondence as immi-grant bound with their original world and past. We focused on the authors psychological dynamics and living experiences based on the text The For-eigner (2010) by Alfred Schutz, and also on the phenomenology by Edmund Husserl and Edith Stein. On Claires stories, perceptive, affective, temporality and faith-spiritual living experiences were found, according to the categories of the analysis over The Foreigner by Schutz. Concerning these categories, we evidenced three groups of experiences: the first living experiences as a new-comer; the crisis: the living experiences of trust shock over the habitual think-ing and the tools of the crisis overcoming arising the spiritual experience as a resource to overcome it. It is concluded through the possibility of overcom-ing the crisis through the sharing of the living experiences with the otherness, which occurs on the letters or memories, either from the social relations rep-resented by the receivers of these letters, or the divine transcending dimen-sion

Plan BThis study examined the basic computer literacy skills expected of first year students at Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College (WITC) in the Fall 2000 semester. Instructors at WITC were asked their current and future (2 year) expectations of entry-level students’ basic computer literacy skills through an online survey. The survey questionnaire followed the computer literacy classifications of Clyde (1997) in the following five areas: hardware or equipment, operating system, applications software, use of the information system, and using information contained within the system with a 5-point Likert scale response format. The study was conducted online. Each program instructor at WITC was sent an email describing this research along with a hyperlink to the questionnaire web page. UW-Stout Academic Computing Service processed the survey results for data analysis. Trends of current and future basic computer literacy skills expected of first year students are examined along with consideration for further studies

Rewriting emotions: translation of Claire Keegan’s short story “Foster”

    No full text
Trabalho de Projeto do Mestrado em Tradução apresentado à Faculdade de LetrasThe aim of this Project is to present the Portuguese translation of the short story “Foster” by Irish writer Claire Keegan, and to describe the process that surrounded this translation experience. The first part introduces the author and her work, focusing on the short story as her preferred literary form. The main thematic lines that shape the characters and the story of “Foster” are established. There is a clear intention to demonstrate that literary translation is based not only on a set of essential linguistic skills, but also on initial work sustained by the careful reading of the source text, which facilitates the understanding and interpretation of the author's intention and message. In building the theoretical basis for this approach, the contributors who have favoured bringing the reader closer to the source text were fundamental, while reconciling this with an attachment to the target culture and language, whenever this proved to be the most effective strategy in the eyes of the translator. The textual analysis of “Foster” pointed out one of the main characteristics of Keegan's work, in line with the greatest short story writers: the use of the implicit and the unwritten/hidden expression of emotions, and how their “rewriting” is done effectively in the target text. In addition, other translation challenges and problems were identified: the majority use of direct speech, the marks of orality and colloquialism in a fundamentally informal and regional register, the stylistic marks deliberately used by the author, and the local and cultural elements that give the text its consistency, comprising a whole set of discursive and narrative features that are peculiar to it and which, naturally, placed the translator before a series of decision-making acts and the adoption of translation solutions here presented.O objetivo deste Trabalho de Projeto é a apresentação da tradução para português do conto “Foster” da escritora irlandesa Claire Keegan, e da descrição do processo que rodeou essa experiência de tradução.

Cultural transfers in Yiddish and Belarusian children’s literature and illustrations in the BSSR (1921-1939)

    No full text
The article offers an overview of the production of books for children in Yiddish and Belarusian in the BSSR between 1921 and 1939. While situating the study in the wider context of the development of Jewish and Russian/Soviet children’s literature in the early 20th century, it analyses the creation of two corpuses of texts and images in parallel, taking into consideration the specificity of the Belarusian policy towards national minorities. The article evaluates the level of transfers between Belarusian, Jewish, Russian and other children’s literature, through the number and choice of translations, the mobility of the artists that illustrated these books and the circulation of themes and styles. Although the number of translations between the Belarusian and Yiddish corpora was limited, the author argues that the cultural transfers were visible in the themes of the books and the style of the illustrations

A developmental difficulty in autism is in the formation of the child´s body image, in which the mother´s actions on the baby´s body and their meanings help the child recognize its body as its own. With these actions the child is able to understand what is his or hers and what pertains to others, being able to construct its Self and its body image. The research question is: how can therapeutic riding, as a therapeutic method, help in the construction of the body image of a child with autism? The APEGI instrument, Psychoanalytic monitoring of children in schools, groups and institutions, a new instrument, still undergoing validation, was used. The objective of this study was to understand the impact of therapeutic riding on the construction of an autistic child´s body image through the body image axis of APEGI, that is a guide of a child´s psychological growth from the age of four. This is a qualitative, descriptive research, including a case study of a child with autism and field work where there was observant participation of the researcher. The case study was of a three-year-old autistic child who didnt present genetic syndromes or severely incapacitating physical illness. During the beginning of 2019 the child of the case study was attending a regular school and was assessed with APEGI, where the whole instrument was used, including all four interviews. After the first assessment of APEGI the child attended individual therapeutic riding sessions once a week and the researcher made notes of the observant participation in a field diary. At the end of these sessions, in December 2019, the child was assessed with the APEGI instrument again and the Body Image axis was analyzed as to understand if any change had occurred from the first to the last assessment. In this study therapeutic riding was analyzed as a possible strategy for the promotion of the development of the body image of a child with autism. The results show that the child at the end of the study manages to recognize herself in the mirror and has more autonomy when taking care of herself. Therapeutic riding is an important method that contributes to the construction of the body image of a child with autis
