Uporaba metode sledenja pogledu za načrtovanje in vrednotenje bibliografskih informacijskih sistemov
After the turn of the millennium, the number of studies using the eye tracking method has increased tremendously, but its use in bibliographic information system research is rare. The main advantage of eye tracking is an unbiased observation of a user’s gaze and insight into how their attention is distributed during tasks. In this thesis, we examine how existing applications of eye tracking can be applied to bibliographic information systems and provide recommendations for its use in designing and evaluating bibliographic information systems. To achieve this, after reviewing the literature and analysing the use of measures in it, we conducted three user studies between May 2019 and May 2022. The studies included a comparison of search initiation on two digital libraries’ homepages, an exploratory search in an established online bookstore, and an examination of a results list of a prototype online library catalogue, which display was based on LRM. To gain methodological insights, our studies examined how the eye tracking results compare with those from other methods (i.e. screen recordings, concurrent and retrospective think-aloud, and standardised user experience questionnaires). The results showed that eye tracking is suitable for identifying usability problems, but we encountered difficulties when analysing pages with diverse layouts due to dynamic elements. Caution is needed when interpreting eye tracking results alone, as these may be ambiguous without insights provided by other methods. Based on our testing of eye tracking in our studies, we developed guidelines and made recommendations for the use of eye tracking, which can help practitioners and researchers when planning and conducting their research on the design and evaluation of bibliographic information systems. In addition to the methodological findings, each study provided findings on user interfaces and user behaviour that were implicitly obtained during eye tracking analyses. Finally, problems and limitations are reported as well as avenues for future work.
Analysis of Slovenian Public Libraries’ YouTube Channels
Magistrsko delo obravnava uporabo YouTube kanalov slovenskih splošnih knjižnic in analizira njihove vsebine, strategije upravljanja kanalov ter odzive uporabnikov. S kvantitativno in kvalitativno analizo smo proučili vrsto in pogostost objav, tehnične značilnosti videoposnetkov, njihovo vsebino ter odziv uporabnikov (ogledi, komentarji, všečki). This master\u27s thesis examines the use of YouTube channels by Slovenian public libraries and analyses their content, channel management strategies, and user engagement. The aim of the research was to determine how libraries utilise this platform for promotion, education, and maintaining contact with users, particularly during and after the covid-19 pandemic. The study analyses YouTube channels of ten libraries, based on videos published during two periods: October–December 2020 and October–December 2022. Using both quantitative and qualitative analysis, we examined the type and frequency of uploads, the technical characteristics of the videos, their content, and user response (views, comments, likes). The findings indicate that public libraries significantly increased their presence on YouTube during the pandemic, frequently posting videos of cultural events, storytelling sessions, workshops, and literary evenings. After the pandemic, the volume of uploads decreasedhowever, some libraries recognised YouTube as an important tool for long-term communication with users. The findings shed light on a period when Slovenian public libraries increasingly adopted YouTube as a channel for user engagement, while the analysis of video characteristics may also assist libraries in planning and optimising digital content to enhance visibility and interaction with users
Use of Social Networks among Slovenian Librarians for the Purpose of Professional Development
Danes so družbeni mediji in družbena omrežja stalni spremljevalec skoraj vseh. Today, social media and social networks have become almost everyone\u27s constant companion. The advantages that social networks bring can also be transferred from the private environment to the professional sphere. Librarians abroad are already using social networks for professional purposes. In our research, conducted in May and June 2022, we wanted to find out whether they are also used by Slovenian librarians. With the survey we conducted among librarians working in different types of libraries in Slovenia, we wanted to find out how they use social networks for the purposes of professional development and to find out to what extent the use of social networks for the needs of informal education and professional development is present in our the environment, what are the reasons for using social networks for the purposes of professional development and which groups of librarians use them to a greater extent. We found that Slovenian librarians already recognize social networks as useful and important for their professional development and often already use them. 279 librarians responded. As many as 85% of respondents already use social networks for the purpose of professional development. The most frequently used social network for this purpose is Facebook, but in the research we also considered Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, LinkedIn and TikTok. Social networks are most often used, to monitor the activities of libraries and society, to find information about events, to monitor news and trends related to the profession, and to find examples of good practices
Historian as a user of information systems
V okviru raziskave smo si zastavili dve raziskovalni vprašanji, tj. kakšni načini poizvedovanja so uporabljeni pri historičnem raziskovanju in kako uporabniki ocenjujejo izkušnjo uporabe portala Zgodovina Slovenije – SIstory. For more than two decades, new information systems have been developed in Slovenia to support historical research, and when building them, it is necessary, among other things, to think about the user, i.e. the historian. In this research, we set two research questions, i.e. what kind of inquiry methods are used in historical research and how users evaluate the experience of using the History of Slovenia – SIstory portal. The first question was answered by a review of the literature, which showed that, while historians\u27 search methods, strategies and information behaviour are very diverse, there are certain patterns. The latter has been found in a number of foreign studies, which have been in progress for more than thirty years, but there is no detailed research on this topic in Slovenia yet. The second question was answered by a short online questionnaire, which was answered by 30 users of the portal. The majority of the respondents were Slovenian historians and history students, and based on their answers we concluded that the SIstory portal fulfils its main tasks with room for minor improvements
Introduction to user studies in bibliographic data and systems
This introduction to the special issue of Cataloging & Classification Quarterly emphasizes the importance of user studies for understanding users’ information needs and behavior, which form the foundation for developing bibliographic information systems and establishing standards guiding the creation of bibliographic data and records. It provides an overview of the special issue by introducing ten articles selected for this special issue, organized in three thematic areas: Reviewing the Landscape of User Studies, User Studies and Conceptual Models, and Applying User Studies to Bibliographic Data and Systems. Additionally, it offers some references for further study in research methods, aiding readers who are interested in conducting their own user studies
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
