ELISA antigen capture test for detecting Chlamydia spp. in cloacal swabs obtained from birds of prey.
During 1995-96 we were carried out an investigation about the presence of Chlamydia spp. in birds of prey stayed in W.W.F. Rehabilitation Centers in Campania region (Italy). Were checked 14 species of raptors (6 accipitridae, 3 falconidae, 5 strigidae) and the total number of 51 cloacal swabs was obtained for three days on end. Were searched the presence of the specific group antigen of Chlamydia spp. by ELISA Ideia Chlamydia Test (Dako), diagnostic quick micromethod test formulated for human medicine, but employed also in veterinary field, particularly in ovine and avian fields. Chlamydial infection was shown in two subjects of Marsh harriers (Circus aeruginosus) without any clinical signs related to Chlamydiosis. The AA. emphasized the risk of trasmission of such zoonosis to operators of Rehabilitation Centers through the contact with carrier birds of infection

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Presence of campylobacter jejuni and C. Coli in dogs under training for animal-assisted therapies
This study was conducted to evaluate the presence of Campylobacter (C.) jejuni and C. coli in dogs at five dog training centers in Southern Italy. A total of 550 animals were sampled by collecting rectal swabs. The samples were processed to detect thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. by culture and molecular methods. Campylobacter spp. were isolated from 135/550 (24.5–95% confidence interval) dogs. A total of 84 C. jejuni (62.2%) and 51 C. coli (37.8%) isolates were identified using conventional PCR. The dog data (age, sex, breed, and eating habits) were examined by two statistical analyses using the C. jejuni and C. coli status (positive or negative) as dependent variables. Dogs fed home-cooked food showed a higher risk of being positive for C. jejuni than dogs fed dry or canned meat for dogs (50.0%; p < 0.01). Moreover, purebred dogs had a significantly higher risk than crossbred dogs for C. coli positivity (16.4%; p < 0.01). This is the first study on the prevalence of C. jejuni and C. coli in dogs frequenting dog training centers for animal-assisted therapies (AATs). Our findings emphasize the potential zoonotic risk for patients and users involved in AATs settings and highlight the need to carry out ad hoc health checks and to pay attention to the choice of the dog, as well as eating habits, in order to minimize the risk of infection
The zooanthropology of genders: the interspecific relationship and attachment between transgender people and pet
Wild ducks: natural reservoirs of influenza viruses. A proposal of programmes of ecoepidemiologic surveillance to regional level.
The wild migratory ducks are considered the natural reserves of avian influenza viruses. In fact, in such birds the influenza infection generally doesn't show clinical diseases. Besides, the virus, prevalently localized at intestinal level, is excreted in the faeces for a fairly long period. The present research, in cooperation with Istituto Nazionale della Fauna Selvatica in Ozzano Emilia (BO), has been effected on wild migratory ducks captured in the Venetia lagoon. Eighty cloacal swabs were taken and isolation methodic was in according to EEC official isolation methodology. Only one sample has shown haemagglutination up to the dilution 1:64. This sample has been sent to Laboratory of European Reference for the Avian Ortho- and Paramyxoviruses of Weybridge (CVL, Great Britain), where the identification tests are still in course for the determination of H and N antigens and of the aminoacid sequence in the site of cleavage of the haemagglutinin. In the light of obtained results, the increase of the ecoepidemiologic surveillance projects appears desirable to the wild avifauna of the Campania Region, considering the possible transmission of influenza viruses to the domestic poultry
Bacteriological and parasitological monitoring on pheasant breeders faeces samples in two game farms in Campania region (Italy): preliminary results.
In the period from January 1996 (when pheasant breeders are housed for reproduction) to July 1996 (when the birds are released in aviaries) a bacteriological and parasitological monitoring has been carried out through sampling, every two weeks, of faeces of pheasant breeders in two farms of Campania region (Italy). The two game farms, during such period, reared the birds in two different ways: in the first farm (Farm A) the birds were bred in battery, in the second farm (Farm B) they were reared in pens. These different techniques determined different hygienic conditions. The faeces samples have undergone laboratory examinations in order to verify the incidence of pathogenic or potentially pathogenic bacteria, especially Enterobacteriaceae, and parasites. Results have made clear that the incidence of bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, found in both farms could have unfavourable effects on reproductive performances, especially they could determine a high eggs’ contamination with a consequent decreasing hatchability. Furthermore, the most high percentage of parasitological positive tests has been obtained in that farm where breeders have been ground reared, in outside runs. This shows that such a breeding system, from a hygienic point of view can result in a greater amount of health problems
The research of standardized protocols for dog involvement in animal-assisted therapy: A systematic review
Dogs are considered the most important species involved in animal-assisted therapy (AAT), and the scientific literature focuses on the benefits linked to the involvement of dogs in various therapeutic areas. In this study, we carried out a systematic review according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, exploring the scientific literature from the last 5 years (2016–2021) on three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) to highlight the characteristics of the dogs involved in AATs. Based on the scientific literature relevant to such dogs, we considered different parameters (i.e., number, age, sex, breed, temperament, methods of choice and training, health status, research goals, and activities with dogs) to include studies in our paper. After screening 4331 papers identified on the searched databases, we selected 38 articles that met the inclusion criteria. Analysis of the included articles showed that the characteristics of the dogs were neglected. Our findings indicated a lack of information about the dogs, as well as the absence of standardized and univocal criteria for dog selection, training programs, and health protocols
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
