    Race against the Machine. The effects of the fourth industrial revolution on the professions and on the labor market

    The aim of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we run a logit model on a dataset of professions identified according to the fifth digit of Istat cp2011 nomenclature in order to estimate their probability of being «substituted» by robots and artificial intelligence. In that, each profession is classified according to three degrees of substitution: low, medium and high. Secondly, by using data provided by the Italian Labor Forces Survey, we exploit the main characteristics of those professions with high risk of technological displacement. Interesting findings emerge from the analysis. On one hand, jobs requiring creative and social skills are less replaceable compared to those that are manly based on routinely mansions. On the other hand, jobs with high probability of being substituted are associated with both lower levels of instruction and age. Such results provide an empirical contribution to the flourishing debate about the quantitative and qualitative occupational effects of technological progress as well as important policy implications

    The importance of “extensive teaching” in the education of prospective teachers of mathematics

    In recent discussions on university curricula we fostered the idea that an extensive teaching of mathematics is needed in the education of prospective teachers. Most universities only provide courses on methodological didactical issues - if any - or intensive teaching, more suitable for prospective researchers. The goal of this paper is to clarify the meaning of extensive teaching, in the sense already considered in the work of Guido Castelnuovo, and to discuss its relevance today

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Actuator Fault Reconstruction via Dynamic Neural Networks for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Model

    This paper proposes the development of a scheme for the fault diagnosis of the actuators of a simulated model accurately representing the behaviour of an autonomous underwater vehicle. The Fossen model usually adopted to describe the dynamics of the underwater vehicle has been generalised in this paper to take into account time-varying sea currents. The proposed fault detection and isolation strategy uses a data-driven approach relying on multi-layer perceptron neural networks that include auto-regressive exogenous prototypes that provide the fault reconstruction. These tools are thus exploited to design a bank of dynamic neural networks for residual generation that are trained on the basis of the input and outputmeasurements acquired from the simulator. In this work, the residuals are designed to represent the reconstruction of the fault signals themselves. Moreover, the neural network bank is also able to perform the isolation task, in case of simultaneous and concurrent faults affecting the actuators. The paper firstly describes the steps performed for deriving the proposed fault diagnosis solution. Secondly, the effectiveness of the scheme is demonstrated by means of high-fidelity simulations of a realistic autonomous underwater vehicle, in the presence of faults and marine current

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
