Wang Meng and contemporary Chinese literature: the vicissitudes of a committed writer
This thesis examines the way Wang Meng has developed as a writer from the 1950s to the 1990s in the context of New China's political and literary background. It looks at the compromises he was forced to make between his political beliefs in the Communist Party and his chosen role as a professional writer. After his disastrous early foray into what was deemed to be unacceptable political criticism with The Young Newcomer in the Organisation Department in the 1950s, when the opportunity came to start publishing again in the late 1970s he was boldly innovative in style, helping to transform New Period literature, but conservative in content, sticking to politically acceptable topics. It was only with Hard Porridge in 1989 that he ventured again, and very successfully, into political comment. There is no outstanding leading writer in contemporary China, but Wang Meng is a leading contender for the title
Modulation efficiency of LiNbO3 waveguide electro-optic intensity modulator operating at high microwave frequency
The modulation efficiency, at high-frequency microwave modulation, of a LiNbO3 waveguide electro-optic modulator is shown to be degraded severely, especially when it is used as a frequency translator in a Brillouin-distributed fiber-sensing system. We derive an analytical expression for this attenuation regarding the phase-velocity mismatch and the impedance mismatch during the modulation process. Theoretical results are confirmed by experimental results based on a 15 Gb/s LiNbO3 optical intensity modulator
Composition measurements of crude oil and process water emulsions using thick-film ultrasonic transducers
This paper presents an experimental study to investigate the suitability of thick-film ultrasonic transducers for composition measurements in heterogeneous mixtures. Following on from earlier developments [G. Meng, A.J. Jaworski, T. Dyakowski, J.M. Hale, N.M. White, Design and testing of a thick-film dual-modality sensor for composition measurements in heterogeneous mixtures, Meas. Sci. Technol. 16(4) (2005) 942–954], focused on the design and preliminary testing of the transducers for mixtures of vegetable oil and salty water, the current paper looks in more detail into their application to industrially relevant fluids, namely crude oil and process water, which are common in oil and gas extraction and petrochemical industries. The measurements are based on the time-of-flight of the ultrasonic pressure wave in order to obtain the speed of sound. The results, showing the variation of the speed of sound with the volume fraction of crude oil, for three different temperatures, are compared with five theoretical models available in the existing literature. It is shown that the models proposed by Urick [R.J. Urick, A sound velocity method for determining the compressibility of finely divided substances, J. Appl. Phys. 18 (1947) 983–987] and by Kuster and Toks¨oz [G.T. Kuster, M.N. Toks¨oz, Velocity and attenuation of seismic waves in two-phase media. Part I. Theoretical formulations, Geophysics 39 (1974) 587–606] provide a relatively accurate prediction for the speed of sound in the media studied. Interestingly, the model developed by Povey and co-workers [V.J. Pinfield, M.J.W. Povey, Thermal scattering must be accounted for in the determination of adiabatic compressibility, J. Phys. Chem. B 101 (1997) 1110–1112] only agrees with experiment when its thermal scattering features are neglected. Overall, the results obtained demonstrate that the slim-line and compact thick-film transducers can be considered as a viable means for the composition measurements in the process conditions
Global Mittag-Leffler stability for fractional-order coupled systems on network without strong connectedness
This study investigates the global Mittag-Leffler stability (MLS) problem of the equilibrium point for a new fractional-order coupled system (FOCS) on a network without strong connectedness. In particular, an integer-order coupled system is extended into the FOCS on a complex network without strong connectedness. Based on the theory of asymptotically autonomous systems and graph theory, sufficient conditions are derived to ensure the existence, uniqueness, and global MLS of the solutions of this FOCS on a network. Finally, a numerical example is provided to demonstrate the validity and potential of the proposed method for studying the MLS of FOCSs

Antithrombin III associated with fibrinogen predicts the risk of cerebral ischemic stroke
Background and purpose: \ud
\ud
The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of developing plasma predictive value biomarkers of cerebral ischemic stroke before imaging evidence is acquired. \ud
\ud
Methods: \ud
\ud
Blood samples were obtained from 198 patients who attended our neurology department as emergencies - with symptoms of vertigo, numbness, limb weakness, etc. - within 4.5 h of symptom onset, and before imaging evidence was obtained and medical treatment. After the final diagnosis was made by MRI/DWI/MRA or CTA in the following 24-72 h, the above cases were divided into two groups: stroke group and non-stroke group according to the imaging results. The levels of baseline plasma antithrombin III (AT-III), thrombin-antithrombin III (TAT), fibrinogen, D-dimer and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in the two groups were assayed. \ud
\ud
Results: \ud
\ud
The level of the baseline AT-III in the stroke group was 118.07 ± 26.22%, which was lower than that of the non-stroke group (283.83 ± 38.39%). The levels of TAT, fibrinogen, hsCRP were 7.24 ± 2.28 μg/L, 5.49 ± 0.98 g/L, and 2.17 ± 1.07 mg/L, respectively, which were higher than those of the non-stroke group (2.53 ± 1.23 μg/L, 3.35 ± 0.50 g/L, 1.82 ± 0.67 mg/L). All the P-values were less than 0.001. The D-dimer level was 322.57 ± 60.34 μg/L, which was slightly higher than that of the non-stroke group (305.76 ± 49.52 μg/L), but the P-value was 0.667. The sensitivities of AT-III, TAT, fibrinogen, D-dimer and hsCRP for predicting ischemic stroke tendency were 97.37%, 96.05%, 3.29%, 7.89%, but the specificity was 93.62%, 82.61%, 100% and 100%, respectively, and all the P-values were less than 0.001. High levels of D-dimer and hsCRP were mainly seen in the few cases with severe large-vessel infarction. \ud
\ud
Conclusions: \ud
\ud
Clinical manifestations of acute focal neurological deficits were associated with plasma AT-III and fibrinogen. These tests might help the risk assessment of acute cerebral ischemic stroke and/or TIA with infarction tendency in the superacute stage before positive imaging evidence is obtained
Developing risk indicator system of non-compliance for organic crop farms based on China organic regulations
Farming management and certification are essential for organic agriculture development to make sure that farming practices are compliant with organic regulations. To improve the efficiency of organic certification and farm management, a risk-based indicator system of organic crop production was established according to literature review and Chinese organic regulations. Three dimensions, 11 themes, and 25 indicators were selected and the weights of which were determined through Analytic Hierarchy Process. The highest weight was assigned to the production dimension (0.59), followed by management (0.24) and environment (0.17). The three highest risk themes in the sequence were plant protection, detection and soil fertility management with a weight of 0.17, 0.15 and 0.12, respectively. At the indicator level, pesticide detection rate, nutrient satisfaction rate, the proportion of non-chemical treatment, the severity of crop diseases, pests and weeds, and the quality of soil environment ranked top five according to the weight of their risk. Chemicals application including pesticides and fertilizers was the main concern in organic production and certification. The results will provide producers, inspectors, and certifiers useful references to reduce the risk of non-compliance, and increase the integrity and credibility during organic production and certification
Fully Turbulent Mean Velocity Profile for Purely Viscous non-Newtonian Fluids
The characteristic near wall behavior of turbulent flow of purely-viscous non-Newtonian fluids is discussed for both power-law (P.-L.) and Herschel-Bulkley (H.-B.) rheological models. A proper scaling is presented for H.-B. fluids to establish an analogy with power-law fluids with same flow index. To provide reference data for turbulent flow of non-Newtonian fluids, DNS simulations of power-law fluids are conducted in a rectangular channel for a large range of power-law indices ( = 0.5, 0.69, 0.75, 0.9, 1, 1.2). The DNS data show that the mean velocity profile in the viscous and logarithmic layers follow expressions of the form and respectively, where shows a logarithmic dependency on the flow index.Comparison with some experimental data shows the above formulation to be valid for Reynolds numbers (based on shear velocity) as high as 1000
AWALAN ME-/MEN-/MENG- + S- ATAU MENG-?
Abstract: Description of morphological processes involving the verbal prefix me-/meN- in the Indonesian grammars have a long story. Traditionally, me- was described as changing in its form into meng- when followed by a base which begins with vowels, k, g, h, and kh; into mem- when folllowed by t and d; into men(y) when followed by s, sy, c, and j; remaining as me- when followed by m, n, ny, ng, l, r, w, and y. In the process, the initial p, t, l, and s are lost and the fate of the bases is no longer discussed. In this presentation it will be argued that not only prefixes but bases also entitled to more than one allomorph, changing the initial p, t, k, and s of the base into their respective homorganic nasals. This argument is supported by the occurrence of allomorphs like –masang, -nulis, -nguras, dan –nyapu in reduplication. Hypenation in written words like me-masang, me-nulis, me-nguras, and me-nyapu are also proofs of the allomorphic existence.
